Record Collectors of the board!! 15:14 - Mar 31 with 6611 viewsSpaceman_P

As I know you guys or at least most of you are all serious music heads.

Question to you guys... any of you also record collectors too? If so how are your collections, what are some of the highlights, holy grails, rarest records/cds etc. Do you have any current on-going collections right now? are you a completist? do you know you're flexi's from your vertigo swirls

Love to know. I am a committed record collector, its quite maddening been buying music since I was 12 years old. I am 38 now, still a huge passion, likely will never stop.

I also have my own record label too, plus make music myself.

IN VINYL we trust (after Marti of course)

Pretty much the same as me.

Bought a lot when I was a kid, still have most of 'em, lost interest by my mid twenties.

Any truth in they recent found there were more of the A&M pressing then first realized. Still rare though.

Got my record collection shipped here and sold it for $2000

Yes. My A&M copy was 'lifted' from those heading for destruction. I very much doubt the bloke I got it from limited his entrepreneurship to one.

Cheeky to ask I know, what did it take to acquire.
0
Record Collectors of the board!! on 16:12 - Mar 31 with 4624 viewsJuzzie

My understanding is that there were never that many out there, hence the high price.

When A&M was shut down in 1998 any member of staff who had been there more than 8 years, IIRC, got a copy along with a letter of authentication as there were around 30 in the safe.

I was one of the 18 or so people who got one. No idea though what happened to the others.

Problem is that this meant the value dropped for quite a long time. Someone even had the cheek to offer me £600. I politely declined.

I’ve got a large collection but this is surely the most valuable!

I’m one of only 2 people who admit to having it on Discogs. Mind you, 6 people apparently want it!

I've a huge collection of vinyl and CDs much to the annoyance of my wife.
She makes the oft quoted remark “it'd take you about 20 years to listen to that lot”

Somewhere in my loft with the rest of my vinyl, I've got the first UK pressing of the Rolling Stones first album, but sadly not its cover. Amazingly, it's the copy my mum bought in 1964. Not sure if it's worth much without the cover.

I used to have a demo copy of Elvis Presley's first album on HMV.
It just had a plain brown sleeve. It was never released as HMV decided Elvis was a bit risque with his swivelling hips etc so it was eventually released on RCA.

Reflexive post of this gem:

I'm an acquirer not a collector. I've always defined a collector as someone that is obsessive about owning everything from an artist or group. e.g. multiple releases, Jap. or US imports, even if they are the same. I'm not really fussed about definitive collections.

on my wantslist....absolutely brilliant psychedelic football freak-out

I would agree there is a certain type of record collector which is a pretentious asshole and I say this as someone who does collect.

I think 90% of the Youtube record collector warriors are in this camp.

In my many years of going to record shops, there is definitely a spectrum of "collectors" bordering on the extremes of absolutely bizarre. From the 50-year old virgin type to the yuppie nerd who also is a hi-fi obessive. A few people in the middle are pretty sound and usually very interesting people.

I can tell a few of you on this board fall in this category and I'd love to have a drink with you someday and chat about music.

The most bizarre record collector I met in a shop was a Neo-Nazi bloke who wore full-on SS get-up and collected only German Classical LPs. (this is one of the extremes I was talking about above - someone clearly suffering mental illness)

Then there is the other side, where you get the arrogant record collector. "I have this mono press of this or that therefore I am better than you".... can't stand those pricks.

I used to love browsing in secondhand record shops - picked up a fair amount of goodies. Then they almost disappeared.
Fortunately there are quite a few around now. I drove past one in Chiswick High Rd the other day and will get a bus up there soon, check it out and have a few pints.

I am not really a collector but I do remember the Record And Tape Exchange-was it in Goldhawk Road? I thought that was excellent, always brought plenty of LPs back to Austria. It was pretty awkward as at that time I used to travel on trains. And as I usually went there when watching QPR I remember taking the records into the ground..Never had a problem...
Still buy a lot, but it is CDs nowadays, have not gone back to vinyl...(yet)...

Yes there was a branch on Goldhawk Road: bargain basement was crammed full of vinyl. Gutted when it closed. Was drinking in Notting Hill Gate after the Brum game: used to be five of their shops selling vinyl at one stage, down to one now I think and the vinyl isn’t cheap.

ISTR seeing footage of Blondie doing an in store appearance at one of these in Notting Hill? Lots of kids. I think they left Clem Burke behind when the tour bus drove off :)

Truly vinyl is very expensive. My eyes water now when I look at the price of some new found "must have" and I think back to the days of my youth picking up classics for just a few $AU at record fairs in the late 80s early 90s.

Record Corner in Balham used to be v good.
The shop was in two sections - Reggae and Ska for the local West Indian population and the other half Country and Rock
I hasten to add- no segregation! both sides welcome to cross over. Dunno if it's still there.

Love playing records. All dance stuff, House, breakbeats. Got quite a few rare bits that go for silly money on Discogs but nothing major. Old Skool Hardcore and Jungle go for decent money although there has been loads of represses recently which knocks the value off.
I don't buy just for the sake of collecting, I play all my tunes and love mixing. No idea how many records I have but I'd hazard a guess around 5000. And they're all bangers.. !

Occasional providers of half decent House music.
