4 Clean sheets in a row on 08:10 - Dec 12 with 1535 views | ThGrimRanger | Steve Cook has been nothing short of immense this season. If there's a better on-pitch leader in the championship then i’d like to see him. We have a young squad now and his constant organisation, encouragement and cover for the rest makes the difference. Highest paid player at the club and worth every single penny.

4 Clean sheets in a row on 08:41 - Dec 12 with 1461 views | gazza1 | The back 4 are doing well atm & the GK. The weakness is Ashby. Ashby continually comes inside onto his right foot - that is not good because he is coming into traffic and very dangerous if the ball is intercepted. Ashby is the weak link when Paal isnt available. Personally I would play Fox at left back instead of Ashby.

You've got to cut Ashby some slack. He's a right footer playing left back, same as Morrison, and we look lopsided because of it. As has been discussed on other threads, this is what happens when you only go into a season with one left back.

No slack here, he is old enough to know that going inside is trouble. ....he has been a professional for how long!!! There are other things whereby he fails but thats for another time but overall I'm not sure he is good enough to play Championship football, let alone Premier.

4 Clean sheets in a row on 00:23 - Dec 12 by numptydumpty | He may become a Rangers player He is not likely to be top half Premier league any time soon Think we signed him as we realised Santos signing was possibly a mistake. Paal is injured and Larkeche injured away on loan so who would you have at left back today. The manager rates him above Morgan Fox clearly |
Well I suppose I wouldn't have left us with only one left back at the club and also not tried to sell that one left back all summer . It's not Ashby's fault that he clearly isn't good enough and at the moment there isn't anyone else to play there bar Fox who also isn't good enough but I don't like the fact we're allowing another clubs player to make mistakes at our expense It also just goes back how poor the recruitment was in the summer
4 Clean sheets in a row on 09:22 - Dec 12 with 1340 views | kernowhoop | Like everyone else, I am delighted with the tightening up of the defence. But, in the first half last night, a better team than Oxford would have taken advantage of some very sloppy play from Rangers. How many unforced errors were there in the first 45 minutes? It was very hard to understand after Saturday's performance.
4 Clean sheets in a row on 09:46 - Dec 12 with 1296 views | RBlock | If Paal is still struggling with injury and Ashby with form out of position, I'd be tempted to play Clarke-Salter at LB when he's back fit. Keeps Morrison on the pitch who has been fantastic, adds another 6ft something aerial presence for set pieces, and we know he can play out well from the back.

He may be on a loan with a view to it becoming permanent. We would not know that. As for him being someone else's player. He is not currently going to get into Newcastles first team squad and may or may not ever get to that level. He is our player this season and possibly beyond. I have seen enough about him to see he has potential and as said we are playing him out of position It's not his fault in anyway that we only had Paal as a left back that our recruitment was bad. Cut the guy some slack. He is only 20 years old too. He could well improve in time. Only at the start of his career. [Post edited 12 Dec 10:25]

Notwithstanding the result, you can't look at Ashby's performance last night and say it was working. Paal in at LB when he's fit is an obvious change.
4 Clean sheets in a row on 10:48 - Dec 12 with 1167 views | Beckenhamhoop | Jimmy Dunne continues to defy logic at right back. He’s not quick and not the most comfortable with the ball at his feet but does a brilliant job even against the leagues top scorer in Sainz. He gets forward and links up well. He’s undropable. As has been stated though the weakness is at LB. Ashby had an absolutely shocking performance last night, giving the ball away so many times. I know he’s only young but his basic passing ability is very poor. Fox was equally as dodgy when he came on.

4 Clean sheets in a row on 12:05 - Dec 12 with 918 views | dmm | I think Marti is well aware of Ashby's defensive weakness. The heatmap of last night's game shows a much larger percentage of our attacking play was down the right than the left. In fact, Smyth and Madsen, who mainly played wide right, had twice as many touches as Saito on the left. I think this was to reduce the pressure on Ashby's defensive duties. It's a shame because it meant Saito had fewer chances to do his stuff.

Just had a quick look. Ashby isn't young a la Kolli or Morgan, he's 23 years old and cannot use his left foot to play a simple pass down the line or to pass to his team mates. He chose to go down the premier league club route because it was/is lucrative, financially, for as long as his current contract lasts. That though, is at the expense of him playing regular competitive football and honing his skills. Such as being competent enough to use your weaker foot. We got lucky last night due to Oxford being so abject. He must have played three to four passes into congested areas of the pitch last night in the second-half alone. Against better opposition they would have been seized upon and could have led to goals being conceded. All because he cannot use his left foot. 23 years of age and he's only started 20 games. In playing terms, he's still a novice in spite of his age. [Post edited 12 Dec 13:22]

I think his giving the ball away was more frustrating as many of those were under, relatively, low pressure. He made numerous attempts to play inside 20 yard passes that didn’t find a teammate. However, there were a few times I remember him pushing high up on the left into space and the pass not coming and it must be a challenge to play on the opposite side to where you’ve always played.

Then, the club should have brought in another left back or not let Larkeche go out on loan. But, they chose the opposite. He's playing out of position, and he's not hiding like some previous loans. Is it ideal? No, but the club caused this problem, so we should support him.

I'm supporting him alright. However, Morrison isn't playing on his preferred side, yet he is capable of using his left foot and is comfortable in doing so when required. It's a basic skill which Ashby, coming from a premier league background, should have been able to master. There are no excuses. [Post edited 12 Dec 13:00]

Well you’re not really supporting him, you’re slagging him off. Didn’t have a great game last night but has done ok recently and has been improving. Cifuentes trusts him to cover left back and also moved him to right midfield for a bit after bringing Fox on so that’s good enough for me.

A very surprising stat but context is everything. You can be surrounded by three opposition players and have the ball taken off you or you can pass the ball, under little pressure, straight to the opposition like Ashby did last night on several occasions.

There both right sided players & it might be that Dunne wouldn't have the same impact on the game at left back. Dunne is the best right back at the club, so why move him from where he has performed well?
