Film 2025 17:13 - Jan 10 with 72078 views | E17hoop | To save polluting the TV thread, I thought I'd start a thread for the films we've seen this year. I saw A Real Pain the other day and it's a really nicely put together piece by Jesse Eisenberg. It unpeels like an onion, with each layer getting closer to the central pint. Good film. Babygirl could have been so much better. Nicole Kidman does well but it all feels a bit 'off'. Rewatched Anatomy of a Fall the other day - brilliant.

Film 2025 on 16:34 - Sep 10 by simmo | Watched/rewatched a few under the radar films recently. Dangerous Animals - a mini horror-style film about a guy feeding people to sharks. Jai Courtney is great Rebel Ridge - this one is on Netflix and it's my 2nd watch. Low key cast and gets you straight away. Like a Rambo-esque plot about a man taking action against corrupt local police. I don't know how the main guy isn't in more - and he's from London which I discovered after. Strong recommend. |
Rebel Ridge is excellent - won an Emmy I think? Caught up with Spinal Tap 2 and although it's not the original, it's way better than I expected it might be.

I didn't see if it won but pleased if it did - feels like a proper under the radar film. On those same lines, the guy that played the dickhead policeman (not Roy from the office) was in another underrated film I watched this week - Shot Caller. It's the guy from Game of Thrones and John Bernthal, among others. A really good prison related drama I heard almost nothing about before. Solid performances and the story goes back and forth and is really well told. It's free to watch with Amazon Prime

Film 2025 on 09:14 - Sep 20 with 3145 views | CateLeBonR | I watched Fremont last night on channel 4. About an Afghan woman building a new life in California producing fortune cookies for a Chinese Restaurant. Really enjoyed it.
Film 2025 on 16:46 - Sep 26 with 2788 views | E17hoop | One Battle After Another is tremendous. Sean Penn should win ALL the best supporting actor awards and the music is genius. There's once scene with a car chase over a hilly road which is fantastic. Quite quite brilliant and my favourite film of the year.

Anyway you can record what you watch and leave ratings and reviews. If you are a movie head your should check it out...and add me OafParkour. If there are a enough people we can have a Rangers film group.

Always hearing people mention it and thinking I should check it out. The allure of having my dysfunctionality confirmed could finally persuade me...

Simmo1984! I try cataloguing all films I watch and made a plan to watch 100 films this year, the list has kept me on track and I've discovered some great watches this year through following people.

Yeah it was more of the same Marvel churn. Superman on the other hand felt fresh and fun.

Signed up too, username unomemento Ive got a Google keep tick box note going back a few years of films that I planned to and then watched. I started to add them to my profile but got bored after three... So I guess I'll start from scratch with new films
Film 2025 on 21:02 - Sep 27 with 2068 views | Bluce_Ree | Just added you. A few years ago I ran a website all about '80s movies. It was a lot of fun but I eventually realised that no-one gives a f**k about your website. That said, a guy from Repo Man (my favourite film) commented on my article about why it was the best film ever. Anyway, Letterboxd is great. I watch a lot of films and forget half of what I saw so having a record of it all is decent. Just watched my 50th of 2025: Weapons. Solid horror film. That's what I'm mostly about.

Film 2025 on 00:48 - Oct 4 with 1510 views | simmo | I watched One Battle After Another at the cinema today and you should watch it. Almost definitely an oscar contender and likely winner for the score and best supporting actor with Sean Penn (at least). The less you know the better, but it's hard to explain anyway. Just enjoy the ride.

Film 2025 on 11:54 - Oct 4 with 1319 views | FDC | Got round to watching Weapons. Weird. I enjoyed it, but was also disappointed at the end. Perhaps it was the hype, but I think also the way the film sets itself up, I expected more from it. As it is, it's a really well made and enjoyable horror, with funny bits, good editing , really slick - but the pay off whilst entertaining is kind of... "Oh ok, so is that all that was going on?". It just felt like it was hinting at being about something deeper

Film 2025 on 21:30 - Oct 4 with 1042 views | 100percent | Ok, so a couple of notes/films to add. Absolutely concur with just about every one on 'one battle after another' - Sean Penn is completely convincing as a psycho US Colonel - definitely the best film I've seen this year so far. Also watched 'Play Dirty' showing on prime at the moment with Mark Walhberg, LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar. It's an entertaining romp, lots of shooting and heist action - it's based on the Parker series of books written by Richard Stark. It plays it out as a comedy - which is an absolute contrast to the more well known Richard Stark/Parker film - 'Point Blank' with Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson, which I consider to be a masterpiece. It's fun though and definitely worth a watch...
Film 2025 on 21:37 - Oct 4 with 1029 views | Bluce_Ree | Horror anthologies are my favourite thing and VHS Halloween delivered. The quality is a little variable between the stories but overall it was good and pretty decent. They're not afraid to kill off a lot of kids though.

15yr old daughter loves 31st October and wants to build up with some horror films. Thinking original Halloween and also want to use the opportunity to watch Alien and Aliens. Any other suggestions? Sorry for hijacking the post I watched Nightmare on elm street with her elder sister a few years back and it didn't age well.

I'm a big horror fan (and also have a daughter who is horror-curious, but at 8 I think too young for anything serious!). The question of what's a good entry level horror is an interesting one. I'm thinking at 15 you don't want her watching anything too grisly or disturbing , so focus on some of the more creepy stuff. Something like The Babadook maybe? Plenty scary but nothing too traumatizing, and a good example of contemporary (resists temptation to say "elevated") horror Edit. Hereditary probably falls into this category too - but imo much scarier than Babadook, so perhaps approach with caution [Post edited 5 Oct 6:37]

Went to see Urchin last night which was just the wrong side of too bleak for me. We left at the same time as OBAA and I heard American Girl coming out the speakers and felt so jealous. I need to see that car chase in IMAX

I didn't rate it really. There's a thing with horror films where if the monster in it isn't done well, you better not show it. Like think of Alien. It's the best movie monster of all time but even then they knew to keep it in the shadows and keep its camera time down to just glimpses. Alien Earth didn't realise that and fully lights the thing for long shots and it looks fking shit. The Babadook just looked like the 'you're my wife now, Dave' guy from League of Gentlemen. As soon as I saw it, it broke the spell of the film for me. But the film did one thing brilliantly. The whole start is about how much the mum is at breaking point with the kid and they nail her whole mood. There's a bit where someone says something to her about how it's good to be a mum and she gives the most subtle look and it cracked me up. Perfect acting.

15 is a great age for horror and there are so many genres. I'd suggest It Follows for starters. It sets up the horror tropes without being OTT. Eden Lake, Lights Out and Sinister are more visceral horror.

Usually I'd be the same, but I actually thought the monster was well done, I think perhaps because it's all so clearly intended as metaphorical. I ended up watching the short film the feature is based on, it's really good, with a nice ending. It's basically the same monster appearance-wise (I think, it was ages ago), with the parental burnout theme really nicely done too. [Post edited 7 Oct 16:06]
