To save polluting the TV thread, I thought I'd start a thread for the films we've seen this year.

I saw A Real Pain the other day and it's a really nicely put together piece by Jesse Eisenberg. It unpeels like an onion, with each layer getting closer to the central pint. Good film.

Babygirl could have been so much better. Nicole Kidman does well but it all feels a bit 'off'.

Rewatched Anatomy of a Fall the other day - brilliant.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

'Touch' is a film on Sky.
I think it's gorgeous.

The marketing for Conclave has been a bit over the top hasn't it.

The marketing campaign worked though because at my Mrs' suggestion we watched it last night. We both thought it was good which is a fairly rare thing as we have quite different taste in films.

The Thunderbolts is pretty good if you're into the Marvel stuff.

Smells like a trout farm in here

I paid the extra for IMAX and worth every penny. There was a round of applause in my screen when it finished

Just watched Warfare. Basically everything you would expect if you've seen the trailer / read about it. Very stressful, edge of your seat stuff. Well worth watching with a good system, very immersive, felt like bullets were ricocheting around my living room. As a snapshot of what being in the middle the Iraq war was like, and the overall insanity of it, it's hard to imagine a film doing a better job.

I saw this film today. It's a beautiful and important work, similar to End of the line (2009) and Seaspiracy (2021) but with a little bit of hope. Maybe, just maybe, the world will listen to 99 year old David Attenborough.

Went to see Thunderbolts last night. It was actually good? Limited green screen, practical effects, every character had an arc, none of that shitty marvel quipping that undercuts serious bits and implies none of it matters, some actual serious themes. A real bounce back

I was on a couple of long haul flights recently and luckily my son fell asleep both ways so I actually managed to watch a couple of films.

A Real Pain - really enjoyed this film. Really enjoyable journey with great performances.

Heretic - this definitely petered out to silliness in the third act but Hugh Grant's performance was truly creepy. Much better actor than anyone gave him credit for in the 90s

Shit but local

While the rest of the family were watching the god awful Eurovision on Saturday night, I finally got round to watching the documentary Africa Addio.

Made in the mid 1960s it looks at the fallout in post-colonial Africa - it's brilliantly made and how the Italian film makers didn't die in the three years they made it, I don't know (although at one point they are nearly executed by a mob).

It's incredibly visceral and sadly a lot of blood is spilt (both human and animal); it's a tough watch at times and it will definitely make you question humanity but it is pretty much unique as a piece of film making.

It's available on YT, and I would recommend the original Italian version with subtitles.

Finally got round to watching Babygirl.
Dreadful. If I wanted to watch porn, why go for the soft version with a 57 yo as the central character

I believe it’s classified as ‘niche’ porn by those that manifest such things….

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Watched this in the cinema at the weekend. I'm still not quite sure what I think of it.

Up to the point where the young lad is performing in the club, with the magical realism etc , I was 100% in, loved it. Great music like you say, beautiful looking film too in places, compelling performances.

But by the end -- and trying to avoid spoilers -- I was a bit, I don't know, confused I guess. Despite being a long film the mid section felt rushed, and I didn't feel invested in what was going on, or what the point was really. The genre mashup had potential, but it just didn't really work for me.

Edit: my wife made the point that we're probably used to multi-hour tv series now, where character development can take place over longer periods of time, which is probably true

Went to the Prince Charles to see 28 Days Later last night.

It.....really wasn't as good as I remember it being.

I always thought it ran out of steam in the final act, but that's actually the most coherent part. The first half is like Boyle throwing every technique he learnt at film school at it. I know they shot it cheap but it looks awful, especially on a big screen.

The empty London opening is iconic though

Mission Impossible Final Reckoning is good but not as good as the previous one. The action is great but the continued throwbacks at the start to the other films in the series are less interesting than McQ thinks they are.

I haven't seen any of the MI films since number 2 but keen to watch the last one in the cinema so watched Fallout, what a brilliant action film, all around great stuff. Going to try and watch Dead Reckoning tonight but these 3hr run times are killer...

+1 for Sinners, absolutely loved it. That one scene - you'll know which one - was incredible.

I'm trying to get to 100 films this year, currently on 45 but flagging...

It was more that I decided to keep track of the films I watched through Letterboxd, and make a conscious effort to watch more movies generally instead of just putting on some binge tv background stuff because I can't sit and concentrate on something!

It's not new films specifically, it includes rewatches, but 100 seems a realistic target...

I think it was good at the time with the fast zombies etc but has been surpassed by The walking Dead, Train to Buscan etc. Always thought the characters were very cliched but as mentioned in this thread it’s harder to build up characters in a film compared to a TV series.

Mission Impossible ( nonsense but a time pass) - Am I the only one who sat there thinking the bad guy looked like Marti? Been busy on gardening leave!
