Not sure that anyone plays Subbuteo any more but, if they do, how do they play out from the back when the goal keeper has a long bit of plastic on his back?
Sometimes it feels as if our keepers have a long bit of plastic on their backs, which, because the plastic is passed through a slot in the back of the goal, prevents them from moving out and catching the ball!

There ARE videos on Youtube showing how teams SHOULD do it but not how Subbuteo players should do it!

Looking at these Subbuteo players they all seem to just 'stand there' waiting for the ball to come to them, a bit like Saturdays game and how Dozell used to!

Haha good point! Back in the 70s, you could get an interchangeable goalkeepers set, comprising two stalks and six goalkeepers on semicircular bases, each base with a slot so the stalk could be attached. That meant the 'keeper could be detached and flicked in the same way as an outfield player.
The two problems with them were that they did tend to come loose quite easily and when used to kick the ball like an outfield player, they produced weak kicks because the slot in their bases made the bases lighter than those of the outfield players.

This thread reminds me that QPR managers and players are temporary and class (in this case our fans humour) is permanent. Thanks for brightening up an otherwise very difficult day in Vancouver.

Do you still get the long throw specialists?
The Striker goalies could chuck the ball a long way...
They struggled to command their penalty areas, though

Striker was a brutal game - the number of ex-players that later suffered from chronic head and neck injuries from the constant pressure placed on their bonces is a national scandal
I had this in the early 1970s (in addition to Subbuteo) but, other than my older brother, I couldn't find anyone else who played it. I see from YouTube that they tried to bring it back.

Wow, never heard of that one! It looks similar to Chipper.
My parents bought me this one, I much preferred Subbuteo, but my mates loved it. It was very simple to play and was ready to go straight out of the box. The pitch was made of metal and indentations sloped towards the players, so the ball - a ball bearing - would roll to their feet. The outfield players couldn't move anyway.

Lest we forget
I wish we could get a super striker for £9.

My youngest son and I still dig the Subbuteo out at Christmas. Great fun if you allow an bit of latitude with the flicking.
Casdon Soccer was another great football game from growing up. Two wheels controlled your players across a plastic mogul filled pitch. Brilliant fun. I picked one up on e-bay about ten years ago but recently discovered it in cupboard and all the string controlling the levers had come off. We just pretend that side is QPR.
I'm at the age where Subbuteo was starting to come to the end of it's time as the video game took over but I has it.
I also had a cricket one where the batsman had his bat on a piece of string you pulled and the fielders all were open handed/legged and that's how you got out. I can't remember how the bowling worked though. Anyone have that?

I've got Subbuteo Cricket - still! It survived the recent massive clear out I've been having.
The bowler is like any other standard Subbuteo figure - so, on a semi-circular base - but the player's image is printed on flat plastic and there is a metal triangle at the back of the base, into which you put the ball. You can tilt the triangle to angle the ball in or away.
The stumps sit in a large, green plastic base with indentations which direct the ball towards fielders, e.g. the wicketkeeper and the slips. If the ball hits the base and deflects into the catching cup of a fielder, that counts as an edge and you are out.
There are two official ways of bowling:
1 - The bowler is placed against said green base with the triangle furthest from the batter. The bowler is then tipped forward with a tap of the finger, so the ball comes over his head towards the stumps.
2 - The bowler is positioned with the triangle facing the batter and the back of the bowler's base is flicked to - hopefully- project the ball forward. I found this method tricky and so always stuck to the first one.
Ah, I found a picture of the bowler!

Stick 200 matchbox cars behind the end and that’s Oxford.
Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

I have the cricket and rugby games and several box sets of International and World Cup sets and even once had the hockey game. The Munich football edition is highly sought after and goes for hundreds of pounds. Subbuteo even made a space game and an angling game both of which are worth a fair amount of money.
