Would be Derry and Hill for me
Season before we had Tosic for a bit and I thought he was excellent
Remember first game of season being in the pub with a few mates and my brother saying who we thought might be ok etc
Me: Derry and Hill, really both 30 odd and Tosic was excellent and we let him go Derry is nothing more than a pub player

Not a player, but the initial appointment of Ian Holloway didn't really get anyone excited, Lower league manager, not too much experience, club in debt and looking at relegation.
Probably one of, it not the most important decisions the club has even made.
Some could argue, there isn't a club without him.

Another vote here for Derry and Hill. Given their age and respective careers to that point I wasn't expecting too much but boy oh boy were they effective. Their intensity, solidity and consistency provided the foundations for the more creative players like Taraabt and Faurlin to express themselves.
Warnock clearly knew what he was getting having brought them to QPR from his former club Crystal Palace. Indeed, at Palace Warnock was so impressed with Derry that he blocked a return to parent club Leeds and quickly moved to made his loan signing permanent. |  | | |

A year or so earlier I brought my Palace-supporting friend to a Monday night game against them. I made some dismissive comment about Derry being up against Akos, and he said, “just watch him for five minutes rather than follow the ball”. It was a revelation, always close to the ball when we had possession, cutting out routes even if he didn’t win it, he immediately gave it when he did to a more talented team mate and got back in position, trying to read where he might be needed next. I was thrilled when we got him. 10 goals and 5 assists in 561 league appearances (about 130 yellow cards) show that bare statistics don’t give you the full story. | | | |
