It's obvious what the very rich do for two reasons:
Past behaviour - We've seen it here before and there is a reason why Monaco is stuffed full of very rich people.
Logic - You can buy citizenship in most countries for as little as £300K. Even the not so rich in the UK e.g. those with the cash and a decent pension are financially better off doing it.
The answer as ever is to find the sweet spot for taxation high enough to generate revenue but low enough that people are happy to pay it rather than avoid it. |  |

Putting extra on business national insurance for employees contributions has it's consequences. It's just not big business but your local butcher, hairdresser, restaurant etc. What happens prices go up, job opportunities cut. Luckily I no longer employ people any longer. [Post edited 18 May 9:27]

Besides which, when you do try to tap into their wealth they just move the money offshore, they use tax havens and that's besides all the sneaky loopholes that were put into tax law when the big accounting firms were "consulted" about the changes and wrote in the loopholes themselves, in my opinion that's what happened anyway.
I'm not sure what the sweet spot for taxation is because the hyper rich will always try to lower their payments. When you earn hundreds of millions per year I'm not sure they accept the percentage as being the same as us plebs, they just see a large number being taken. Remember a lot of very rich people, through the various schemes and loopholes, actually pay a smaller percentage than many of us plebs.The big American companies have paid hardly any tax and even had rebates some years despote billions in profits.. | | | |

The first thing households and businesses tend to do when under pressure is cut out unnecessary spending and review the likely returns on investment projects started or planned.
The Government needs to be clear about the principles it uses to identify value in it's decision making. Right now I have no idea what decisions are based on. | |
