I'm surprised there weren't a few more released given the Nourry's announcement about 20 year olds in the DS needing to be knocking on the door of the first team.

I suspect there will be more movement out of the DS to come, including loans and perhaps one or two being included in the senior team. Those under 21 are not counted in the maximum 25 players.

Surprised they've let Hassan Hamid go.

Never knowingly right.

If Esquardinha is here for the medium term then any other U21 left backs are just making up the numbers.

Literally didn’t play / get selected all season, so why do you think that?

Agreed. Talla, and Petrie, whilst both good technical footballers, but on the small / slight side, now both 20.

Murphy in the year above and now aged 21. 22 with a years extension. Tiny and slight, but scores goals in Dev Squad, but isn’t going to make it at this level.

That’s one of the really good things he’s done/said so hopefully he sticks to it.

There is a happy medium though.

We need a squad big enough to allow the best players, those that played in the cup, to go out on loans to further their development, additionally, we need to play a more competitive side in the league.

We can't be playing a team of 16 year olds getting beaten 5-0 or 6-0 every game by bigger stronger boys, which hinders their confidence and development. We need a few with a bit more physicality and experience to help them along.

If they are contributing and not expensive, then that's good for the club.

I can see CN's point though.

These young players who are over 19/20 need to be playing regular competitive football at the right level for them for their own development.

Otherwise you end up with players like Dixon-Bonner who are technically good, but probably should have 100+ league games under their belt by 21/22 years old.

If that means they drop down a league or two, then that is what should happen. Stringing the players along to 22/23 and then releasing absolutely kills their future

The academy is doing well. It's not only seeing higher quality players coming through the ranks but also attracting better youngsters released from other clubs.

It must continue to do the things that are driving these improvements and I think releasing players at a younger age who are not going to make it is part of that process. The release of 8 U18s seems to indicate that's going to happen at lower age groups. It will be interesting to see what the U16s who move into the U18s are like.

I hope we see more players progressing from the DS into good loans out or inclusion in the senior squad next season.

Seems as though they are giving some of the older players their own send off from within the DS.

Certainly the departing statements are something Nourrey has gotten right

Seems to me, if brutal, that he's another player into his 20s not really pushing for a first team place, as good as he is. It follows Nourry's trend with dev squad that if you're not pushing 1st team by early 20s then unfortunately you're not going to make it here. I reckon he'll still have a good career in lower leagues (like Arkell Jude-Boyd).

thing is he was on the bench towards the end of the season so surely that means he was pushing for a first team place ? ive not problem with not keepiing players into mid 20s as we have always done but we are bringing an aussie in whos 22 i see , surely they cant be thinking hes gonna be ready for the first team immeed eso coming from a league which is nowhere ner the skill and commitment level of the championship, same for those thinking santos is the new left back , i dont think hes anywhere near ready to be chcukced into the first team has skills etc but a season on loan will be needed to toughen him up

I agree mate, truthfully I hope that rumour stays a rumour. I may be giving the club too much credit, but maybe the thinking is along the lines of: he's too small (clearly not a massive issue, see our army of midget 10s), there are too many players ahead of him in his position (really?), and then I guess age. As you say, doesn't seem like anything a loan or two can't solve. I think the rubric that CN's introduced regarding dev squad is pretty blunt, it just remains to be seen whether it works or not, I guess we'll know in a couple of years.

This is one of those times I stick up for Nourry, because not only is the policy correct but this is also the right decision.

Harry Murphy is a nice footballer, looks for space and has a good delivery, but he's tiny. Not just height but his entire frame, and he's 21 already. He makes Dembele look robust - and that's a player who has always struggled with injuries. Murphy might well have a career lower down the leagues but he'd get creamed in the Championship.

no problem with that but unless he was to have a major growth spurt he was never gonna be the desired 6 foot tall from a earlier age which seem to be the minimum for some clubs , so why have we kept him around for that long ? anyone remember dennis wise ? he was let go by southamtpon as a kid due to him being a midget , trianed with us for a while before being picked up wimbledon

Fully on board with this approach too. Really good comments from Nourry too.

Very much hope a L1/L2 club are going to be delighted we have let him go and he can make his way in the professional game.

I get the sense we’ll be leveraging this PL Cup win heavily to attract a host of new 16-18
yr olds from PL academies who will be younger, of a better standard, and have higher potential than the group being released. I do agree with the point on balance however.

Have to agree: 21 and no first team appearances under any managers are the facts.
Pity he didn’t get a decent loan in the last few years that may have helped him develop but seems no point in keeping him for another few years as that’s not right for either party.

Dennis Wise was a horrible, dirty little scrote. Excellent player though.
