Next season ?
Biggest derby ?
Forget the brand followers " derbies"
These two really do hate each other
A real grudge fest and for me the biggest of all outside Glasgow
Newcastle gets the cream and they get what's left
Sound familiar?
Even goes back to English Civil War days , Cavaliers of Newcastle or Roundheads of Sunderland
Personally I'd rather Sheffield Utd go up as north east is a good weekend

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

Even time cannot dull the blade of some rivalries. The first cut is the deepest?

Some believe it's not really a derby unless it's in the same town/city so Dundee, Glasgow, Liverpool, London etc. The Mackems and Toon, us and Cardiff, rivalry but not derby?

It's just a word thrown at us by tv to generate more interesta dn more money.

Rangers Celtic for me but Newcastle Sunderland not far behind.

Ours is up there which is bizarre as the Basseys claim Bristol City is theirs but have 8000 fans less when they play them.

Leeds Man Utd is pure hatred as well.

Southampton v Portsmouth , Eagles v Seagulls , North London derby and the rest of the hype over these so called grudge matches is wearing thin for me , get the crowd involved .

Visited both Newcastle and Sunderland on various duties over the last couple of years and neither location seemed to be rabid monsters roaming the streets full of hate .

Rangers v Celtic is a totally different animal due to the obvious , that derby is serious .

I’ve been twice & can’t agree with that.

I also don’t agree that Newcastle & Sunderland get along.

The South Wales derby would be up there with the best of them. I didn't miss many derbies from the 80's to the bubble and they were mental. A lot worse than some of the other derbies around despite 12k being seen as a big crowd back in them days. I'd be very interested to see a south Wales derby with a 40-50k crowd (5k away fans) with no restrictions on travel. I'm not even sure the game would get played.

The SWD is the most volatile of all derbies in my opinion. The Celtic Rangers derby tends to lose its appeal given the number of times they play each other. Others in the PL and EFL don’t come close in terms of pure hate.

It hasn’t been volatile since the Vetch and Ninian Park. It’s pretty sterile by comparison now.

The only game that had that kind of vibe was the Jordan Gomez league cup game when we hadn’t played them for a while.

Can’t speak for other rivalries, but ours is severely watered down.

That game was full of everything, on and off the pitch. There were some old hands out that night, some I had t seen for years. And the game was a classic Swans victory.

It’s the only bubble game in the UK I believe. Take that away and you’d see the ‘passion’ so sadly (?) missing.

It was a bubble game for quite a while before we left the Vetch. Even those games were a world away from what it is now.

Like I said, I can’t compare it to other derbies, I haven’t been to them, but it’s nothing compared to what it used to be.

It was made and remains a bubble game for a reason I’d suggest. Probably wise to be kept as one.

Strangely after Swansea started causing bother in Cardiff from around 1992 and the game in Dec 1993 away fans were banned for a bit then the bubble idea came up. There was no FAW reaction when the same happened on two occasion before that in Swansea.

I went to the away game when away fans were banned, Steve Jones scored and Dai Thomas scored we won 1-3. A lot of familiar faces in the ground.

Thomas ran the length of their main stand kissing the Swans badge and taunting them.

90’s and early 2000’s I may well have agreed with you. If you’d been to one at either ground in the last 10 years or so you’d know what I mean. Of course they are hostile and there’s more on them than other games, but they aren’t intimidating or volatile like they used to be.

The bubble situation has dampened it down. The games just aren’t what they were and a large proportion of both clubs fanbases have only ever known it like it is now.

I think it’s pretty naive to consider it more volatile than a same city derby built on centuries of religious hatred that away fans weren’t allowed to attend at all last year.

People don't drink so much anymore and we're all seated, both those things have helped water down the hate.

I prefer not to play them at all now anyway, the day is just a nuisance.

O used to laugh at a lot of it back in the day but the grown up me says we're better off without them.

Yeah a lot of things have changed in the last 20/30 years.

Don’t get me wrong, even home games were terrifying in the 90s! Especially with the street layout in the Sandfields.

It was my favourite game of the season and I did look forward to it, but I’d give that up to see them relegated any day.

I don’t class myself as naïve in way, shape or form 😉 but I think it’s been watered down because of the frequency of the games, 4 per season plus potential cup games?

As I said and we seem to agree upon, the bubble arrangement cools it down somewhat but if that was lifted it would be chaos.

Just read my post back. It came across harsher than I meant and I didn’t mean any disrespect at all!

Yes, I think lifting the bubble would cause chaos initially, as fans haven’t been able to travel freely to these games for decades. I do think it would simmer down after a couple of games though. I don’t think the old intensity is there.

Probably a moot point as we won’t play them for years unless they scrape through the first two rounds of the cup.

A classic Swans win after years of a bbc wales Cardiff city love in.

The south wales evening post headline the next day was …. ‘Gomez grabs glory for the Kings of Welsh football’ ….
The south wales Echo had ‘City fans targeted in stadium of hate’ …..

They did not like it up ‘em.
