Growing up a huge heavy metal / rock fan it speaks volumes that one of the biggest influences on me becoming a ‘musician’ was Sly and the Family Stone at Woodstock . The energy and musicianship is off the scale . It made a huge impression on a teenager into Napalm Death!
Ability and vision of the scale. Just the number of artists Sly (& Robbie) played with and/or produced is a testimony to their recognition in the industry. And damn … they were funky!!

Incredibly funky!
James Brown and his band may get the credit for inventing funk but Sly and the Family Stone brought it to a whole new level.
I loved Motown and Stax so when I discovered funk I gravitated towards JB whose tunes were normally three or four minutes max, and tight as hell. Sly's tunes were more on the free-form side of things, so only a few of them really did it for me, but as you say the ability and vision were certainly off the scale!

You’re not thinking of Sly Dunbar are you? He’s still with us.
I'm often surprised at the way Fresh is regarded amongst his/their albums, generally IMO not given anywhere near enough credit. I feel exactly the same way about Loaded. VU perhaps in a similar place as a band. Both top of their lists for me on the right day (often)
