India Air Crash 21:47 - Jun 12 with 14115 viewsMonkey_Roots

Utterly horrifying.

How does 1 person walk out of that?

Every time that’s mentioned on the news, the say ‘allegedly’ or ‘apparently’, which is understandable when you see that footage - it’s just unbelievable.

Thoughts go out to all those who perished, and their families, but again… how does anyone escape that?

Flying to Berlin a couple of weeks ago, an Indian lady in the row in front of me made a phone call whilst on final approach! Got the right hump with me when I pointed out to her it should be on airplane mode.

An interesting article on the origins of many passengers (including the survivor). I’d never heard of this island, but I dimly remember something about Indians with Portuguese passports when the stories came out about Boohoo paying below minimum wage came out.

Hate helicopters, as Clive says one of the few modes of transport where if you crash there is literally no chance of survival. My father was a good friend of Matthew Harding, despite the (much keener then) Chelsea rivalry, and he never took a helicopter after that, having done so quite a lot beforehand. I went on one once, never again.

"Literally no chance"
I can think, without looking anything up, of Nigel Farage, Mike Smith and Sarah Green and David Coultard all surviving helicopter crashes.

Farage wasn't a helicopter. Greene and Smith was 1988 and I think trees saved them. But you know what I mean....little chance, not no chance.

Think with a helicoptor engine failiure u have a bigger chance of surviving , seen viedos when they can glide to a landing , obv if its anything more serious tail rotor going then ur in much bigger trouble , just saw another air india flight had problems today and had to turn back , thanksfully landed ok though

Took the helicopter from 'Zance to St Mary's 2012.
Was noisy fun going over.
On the return we were watching planes get to the airport in a driving storm, approach the now mud landing strip, climb again and bugger off back to Cornwall.
The copter flew us back despite the weather. We flew what seemed like about 8ft above the heaving Atlantic the entire way.

I viewed a video of the incident.

It seemed as the plane was taking off in the air it seemed to stall then descend and crash.

Did the pilot or co pilot mistake the lever or button for the flap instead of the lever or botton for retrieval of the landing gear or what?

In other words pilot error?

That just seems like something Mr Bean would do... surely not these pilots??

My money is on either maintenance issues or a Boeing issue... and i have about as much of a clue as Mr Bean about it all.

I just want to know more about the survivor, that really intrigues me.

Yes it i agree it is intriguing about the survivor.

However it just occurred to me whether it was a pilot error or maintenance or Boeing issue or whatever.... with all the fuss about AI these days.... surely someone could or should install AI into these planes as a fail-safe mechanism to avoid or try to avoid such dreadful events?

I hate landing.
I always try to book a 747 but they are being phased out.

I've been watching this pilots vid's for a few years now. Some of these are incredible.

You watch one out of interest and then the algorithm kicks in to ensure you go down a rabbit hole for hours at a time.

As a Squaddie In NI during the late Sixties we had a spell for a few days In and out of the Westland Wessex helicopter, one minute your outside a rural farm out In the wilds, next minute your gone and being dumped outside a town.

You'd be surprised how quickly disorienting that Is.

Lot of the pilot commentators and amateur sleuths supporting this electronic blackout theory now.

This isn’t going to be good for Boeing if so, the Dreamliner was the one of their planes you were meant to be able to rely on not to kill you.

Bringing this back up, rumour is that the preliminary report due Friday is going to heavily suggest pilot murder suicide focusing on the fuel cut off switches that were manually pulled.

Well my first instinct when I saw it was the pilots have fcked it up but that would be extraordinary to the point of unbelievable.

Doubles down on why I hate flying so much. We’re at complete mercy of someone else. Looking forward to my flight next week….

Yes I watch Mentour Pilot as well Met, and Pilot Debrief.

As for blaming it on the pilots - Boeing were happy with that conclusion with the first 737 Max that went down and then only when the second went down not long after, and when they had no choice, did they have to concede it might not be pilot error but rather technical details that Boeing had failed to highlight so I'd be a bit sceptical.

I am sure I read at the time of the 737 Max crashes that there was an optional piece of software available that might have prevented both crashes. You had to order this software when ordering the plane.

How can safety be an optional extra? Boeing were lucky to survive in my opinion.

Seems like it’s going to be a bit of a reading between the lines report as the checklist for a dual engine problem would be to pull the fuel cut off and reengage them, yet they will also allegedly report no mechanical issues found…

With all of the whistleblowers recently accusing Boeing of manufacturing quality issues I was half expecting this to be the reason for the Air India crash.

I doubt the pilots had the time to fault find any technical issues.

Too big to fail and generally allowed to be their own regulator I think was what saved them. There were a dozen whistleblowers bringing cases - two of them died suddenly last year - so ten left and you never know what that might bring.
