My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

"Elected one"
That works well.

Often it doesn't.

But the choice is binary. Have elected leaders you can get rid of or unelected ones you can't. Which is your choice?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Interesting posts. I agree with the conversation that resonates the importance of history, but I also agree that in the aftermath of the Queens passing, now is the time to talk about the watering down of monarchy to include the financial burden.

Why does Beckham get a knighthood anyway? (well, other than knowing the right people, funny handshakes, etc.)

He was quite good at football, easy on the eye for the ladies, that's about it.

Poll: How old is everyone on here?

An ugly person finding true love with a royal who was previously with a beautiful posh person? Camilla's story is basically Shrek. It's the biggest love story of our era.

I worked with a guy who met Charles when he was a Prince. Came to where I work and by all accounts he was sound. Didn't care about the Execs and just wanted to meet the real people.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

I‘d be fcking jolly too if I had a net worth of £700m, a divine right to rule, and wiped my arse with fcking swan feathers every day.

OK, but things can get distressing when you're handed the wrong pen.

All problems are relative I guess.

They will never struggle with dirty boots either it seems.

I envisage we will be the last European country with a monarchy. The other European countries with monarchies seem to manage without the pomp circumstance and flummery.
Would anybody here actually be prepared to bow or curtsy?
I can safely say that nobody in my family has been a nazi or a paedophile.

Long may it continue.

Yes I'd do all that tradition dictates you do IF in some sort of formal setting.

The monarchy aren't for everyone but, for me, are a better option than anarchy or not having a "showy" head of state.
I'll admit it's certainly becoming much more of a circus these days, especially since Liz went and the dreaded Megan entered stage left to add to non-sweaty Andy, but overall I think the firm bring a lot of good to these shores.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

The most egalitarian countries in the world either have no monarchy or a scaled back version. They're also the countries that have the most faith in their political systems and where their citizens are generally polled as the most content.

There's absolutely no compelling reason to keep ours in its current format.

Just to say that anarchy can refer not only to lawlessness and disorder but also to a political philosophy that advocates for self-governed societies without rulers or hierarchies.

Historically, there have been societies that existed well without rulers or hierarchies. Another world is possible.

No, having a showy head of state would never do.
