I know a lot of people on here don’t like & will never like women’s football, but any fan of football should enjoy watching Spain. Favourites to win it for a reason.

Poll: Where do you hope to see Salisu start (OK, I know we haven't seen him yet)?

I haven’t seen any of it, but from what I am hearing the smart money seems to be on England failing to get through their group.

Sounds a bit of a Group of Death.

For me part of the reason I am not watching matches from beginning to end is the gulf in class/ability between the "best" teams and the rest.

Spain and France seem the best teams.

I think England, Sweden and perhaps Italy can give them a game.

After that it's a bit like watching Saints last season in that the teams have say two/three decent players but are niave in terms of tactics, undisciplined and unable to maintain 90 minutes of focus.

I accept that the women's game is different from the mens'. We are not going to see the sort of high tempo physical game we see in the PL but rather a more passing based game designed to get the players into scoring positions.

I do very much like the fact that some of the challenges are "robust" and that the refs are allowing them. Given some of the challenges, the yellow card count is surprisingly low.

I have a couple of friends who are coaches at pro level and they are very keen because they see tactical plans being played out at a pace which allows them to see how they develop and also what happens from around the 70th minute when tired legs and minds see those plans start to fray.

I do watch some matches but if there is a good tennis match, a good TdeF day etc, I'll watch that instead.

It is better than League 1, but hardly better than a lot of youth football. I don’t doubt their commitment or hard work, but I believe that professionals who play disjointed and “spaced out” football hardly deserve much support. The vast majority of women’s footy falls into this category unfortunately, which is why the Spain performances stand out. Which shows it is possible to get there, as did Football n he USA, after several decades.

Why do people still insist on comparing women’s football with men’s? I’ve never heard anybody say that the standard of play is comparable. The same could be said of nearly every professional sport that men and women both play.
If people watched it with an open mind they might find they enjoyed it more.

I agree. Nonsense to compare with men who are always going to be physically better equipped, and much better paid for it.
I think there are some misogynistic comments here. Would we overweight and/or aging fans normally compare ourselves to the highly trained players we pay to watch perform at weekends?

think professional tennis shows the way. Mens tennis has a different style to that of womens tennis. Both are entertaining to watch. Sames rules but different styles.

I totally support girls and women playing football, its great to see it happening, but I also thing the hype surrounding the womens professional game and the attempt to sell it as a product up there with the men's game is actually counter productive.

2-3 years ago the Saints women's side were slaughtered bu our U 15's boys side and the Swiss side were slaughtered by a U13 boys team a month or so ago.

I would say that at a push the best teams could probably give a Hampshire League side a game.

The people running it know this hence all the games against the youth teams have been played behind closed doors and hushed up, if they thought that the standard was that good they would pit a omen's Premier League against a men's side to guage the standard.

Truth is it is about creating a new set of football supporters, those who are not interested in the mens games and the overinflated prices etc, but enjoy the atmosphere etc of womens football and there is nothing wrong with that, just sell it for what it is and don't compare it to the mens game and push it into everyones faces

My lad is a mate of the new Saints Women's FC manager Simon Parker. They play in the same football team in Hedge End on a weekend. By all accounts he's a decent bloke & will be a good fit for Saints. He did very well at Blackburn considering he had very little backing.

Venky's, Blackburn's owners, have decided not to support the women's team up there anymore due to low attendances & costs, etc. They've voluntarily withdrawn from the Championship and have been dropped to the fourth tier of English football.

Completely agree with that Nick, the U15's game was hilarious, think the women's side lost 9-0 didn't they? Then the club kept it away from the fans as they were worried it would stop people going to the women's game.

Personally i've got nothing against the women's games but i wish i could opt out of the marketing and emails about it because i have no interest in it at all

I don’t see anybody trying to “sell it as a product up there with the men's game”, Nick. The BBC may be pushing it in its own right but that’s a good thing to help the sport grow. If you don’t like it, ignore it (like I do with snooker). It’s not difficult.

Who exactly is comparing the women's game to the men’s game, apart from you & some other posters on here? It's a totally pointless comparison. (For that reason I won't get into the Hampshire League discussion.)

You dont see anybody trying to sell it as a product ?

With respect have you never logged on to a football website, be it Sky Sports, BBC Sport of even Saints own official site and seeing a headline that makes you think that a club has made a big signing judging by the headline only to click on it and find it's the womens team, not the mens.

Why have Blackburn scrapped their womens side ? because there is no call for it amongst the fans.

Yes some of the big clubs get some big attendances when they play at their stadiums and big up the game, Arsenal average in the 30k's for the games played at the Emirates, but 3,000 for the ones played at the non league ground they usually play the games at.

Same as Saints who announced that they would be playing all the womens games at St Mary's last season and have struggled to get more than 2,300 or so, leading them to move cup games to Eastleigh's ground where they got 700 for one game and 400 for another.

No one is comparing the actual game to the men's game, it is the marketing and hype that is out of proportion

“sell it as a product **up there with the men's game**”

Of course they're trying to sell it as a product, but there's a chasm between the media coverage given to the men's game and the women's.

"No one is comparing the actual game to the men's game"

Also with respect, that's precisely what you were doing in your post:

I take your points, I think we will have to agree to differ though, i think that the women's game hasn't grown organically, ih has been forced on us, given equal billing when it doesn't deserve it.

I think it gets up too many peoples noses rather than enthuses them to watch it.

Most of the women i know who go to watch Saints cannot stand the women's game, so this isn't a sexist viewpoint.

In football when you throw money at something when there is no strong foundations it rarely works long term, think Blackburn buying the Premier League in the 1990's, I worry for Wrexham as a football club in the medium to long term with all their hype going on.

And I worry about the womens game, their target audience seems to be creating a new fan base, one that doesn't go to mens football now mainly women and families.

But there is no loyalty in a new fanbase, when the novelty wears off then things will die quickly if they are not careful.

I watched the first half of Sweden v Poland.

Poland had to win in order to stay in the comp.

Sweden clearly had better players overall.

You would think that Poland should have adopted a tactic of sitting players behind the ball and when they had their three or four chances to break, have a plan which saw midfield players moving ahead of the defenders and then linking to the forwards, probably getting into a scoring position.

No.

Poland played with one up front and when they did get the ball, they tried a long upfield punt which inevitably ended with a Swedish defender.

I can see that in the men's game, that long upfield punt to a quick forward might be sensible but the ladies struggled to get distance and pace on the punt.

Even when a goal down, Poland did not change.

For em this is an example of ladies trying to play the game in a men's way rather than making the most of their own skill set. Until this changes, we're going to see a lot of one sided games which are frankly boring.

You said England never look like scoring. They have scored 2.

The game is a bit frantic at times but it’s a lot more exciting than watching Saints last season. At least they get the ball forward and into the box. The other positive is the absence of shithousery. No pulling hair (note Jack) or feigning injuries to waste time. I haven’t watched much of this tournament but have enjoyed the game tonight. It’s a honest game of football without the over paid cheating divas in the Premier League. Looking like going to penalties.

The pundit at half time is terrible. Like Vicky Pollard on speed.
