Welsh rugby have always wanted to play the Saeson 23:12 - Jul 7 with 1058 viewsReslovenSwan1

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-news/anglo-welsh-league-moves-cl

Easy Cardiff and Swansea Anglo Welsh league with big crowds. . Swansea to play at the Swansea .com and Parc y Sgarlets to protect the pitch.

Newport can play in the United League and Llanelli as well. WRU wanted three not two.

What a disgusting idea. First of all killing off 2 more Welsh clubs. Then there's the new set up they are talking about. No relegation AND they want it to be franchises. At any ppoint a club could decide to upsticks and move like they do in American sport.

Not worth it.

Think the devil is in the detail here. If it is, as it says, going down the franchise route then that is a high risk/ high reward strategy to pursue. If Realistically these investors into the franchises are not going to be Welsh (like football or the 100 cricket teams), this means there’s no direct emotional attachment to an area. If a franchise opens in Wales then it must be supported by the local fans who must turn up in their thousands to ensure the investor didn’t look to move to a wealthier region. If it comes off could be the saviour of Welsh Rugby, if franchises move out then it is the end of professional rugby in Wales.
We need to do something drastic to save rugby in Wales and this is drastic. Whether it’ll work I do not know.
Like I said high risks/high rewards

Said it before, and I'll say it again. The decades long arrogance in believing that Rugby is still King despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary, accelerated by the last 10-15 years of both Swansea and Cardiff doing well in the league is coming back to bite the Rugby hierarchy on the arse. A bit of self awareness might have saved them from this situation.

You've got four professional regions utterly incapable of sustaining themselves due to a lack of interest. Youth development is falling by the wayside because how many sporting kids in South Wales (forget the North. That's always been Football territory. Doubly so now Wrexham are on the rise) are interested in Rugby now?

That feeds into a National structure still convinced that it's important, but which doesn't have the structure underneath anymore to sustain it. The head is alive but the body is dead. The losses will keep coming in perpetuity because there isn't the talent to compete with other nations anymore.

Even the tourists and part timers who make up the majority of every Six Nations crowd will eventually decide that it's easier to watch on TV in the pub. How long do you think it'll take before Wales are getting pumped by every other team in the Six Nations in front of 40,000 at most?

Give it another 5-10 years and Wales will basically be Italy.

There are still people who think we are a rugby country. Probably always will be.

Can’t look past the Principality selling out 5 or 6 times a year and realise there’s nothing underneath it.

Shame really, I’ve given our supporters a bit of gip for being fickle over the years, but rugby fans take it to a new level.

Another example of Welsh division
Rugby only playing grammar schools leave a stench that still remains
It is the national game for many
Fact
That Welsh rugby right now is nothing less than shameful doesn't alter that
World wide Wales IS seen as a rugby country
Fact
Media or not

Rugby fans biggest crime is their patronising shitty drivel towards the " cissies" who play football
Rugby being a game that the soft can't play
Rugby the game for those too fat to play football

And on and on

God help us

Perfect example of what I meant. The wilful ignorance of how far the game is slipping in the public interest against not only the Welsh league football teams, but also the Premier League.

If Wales was a Rugby Nation the team of the second biggest city wouldn't be moving out of the football stadium it plays in because it's at least three times too big for them.

It makes no difference what other countries "see" Wales as. The reality is very different.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I make observations and stand by them
Wales is a.small country YET there exists a schism between rugby and football
Both can be played , watched and enjoyed
Football fans are not the jerks rugby fans see them to be .
As regards " cheating" this is alive and well as it always has been
All Blacks have been cheating full on for a hundred years, South Africans bullying and intimidating as they always have and because of the Afrikaner hatred of the British over a war 120 years ago

The sports should complement each other , they are not enemies

I do agree Welsh media is rugby and Cardiff centric

Finally , on this respectful exchange, ask a Turk what the national game is then a Coff
Chalk and cheese

Enjoy the afternoon

I hate the idea of a franchise. As you say, if the support isn't there they may move. Even if the support is there, if they get a good enough offer elsewhere they may move anyway and that is my big problem. There could be a succesful team that fills its stadium and a bigger city, with a bigger stadium, offers them a deal to move and all the owners will worry about is the money side, the supporters who have there with them won't count at all.

it's na American system and they may like it (though ask those cities who lost their NFL team and they may not) but I'm not sure British fans will take to it very easily.

Global perception is irrelevant. It’s not people in New Zealand or South Africa, or even people like yourself in England who decide that, we do.

However you want to frame it, if participation is low and declining at grassroots level and people aren’t turning out in numbers to watch the Ospreys, the Whites or whoever else, they are voting with their feet. You can’t have a national sport that people only care about six times a year.

There may be many people in Wales who still think as you do, but they aren’t playing and they aren’t attending games in any numbers.

I don’t take any pleasure from that, I’d love to see both sports thriving. I’m your typical pretend rugby fan who gets very invested in the six nations but never knows when the Ospreys are playing. South Wales is absolutely full of people like me.

I feel for the fans who do genuinely follow rugby full time, particularly at the more local levels, as they are some of the most passionate and committed in any sport.

Meanwhile a " generationally talented" group have come up short in the u21 WC narrowly beating Spain after narrow defeats v Argentina and France.

Spain are serious. This does not augur well for Wales s ranking or even the 6 nations membership. Spain in tine could generate eye watering TV cash Hand ball can only take you do far.

Wales teams do better under foreign coaches. We were always in big trouble once Gatland was a busted flush.

No, it's not irrelevant as the narrative is that rugby is the nations number one sport
It's the way the world sees Wales, like it or not
England is the national game of England though for many it isn't , at least not to them
It's about national psyche really
If the national team is doing well , youngsters will take it up as kids need heroes
The fact Wales right now is ignominious means kids she's the game
Recalling our glorious past , rugby union was absolutely the heart beat of Eales as a nation
Football didn't come close
That said , club football in Ealrs in the English system is by far the pre eminent focus of most

Anyway , I've lost myself now

Tomorrow , I shall
No doubt be arguing with some Mackems or Geordies where football interest is off the scale

Appreciate it’s seen as our national sport by pretty much everyone outside Wales.

It is irrelevant. It’s not for South Africans to decide that any more that is for us to decide theirs.

The reality is the vast, vast majority don’t care about it most of the time, Ospreys wouldn’t be moving to St Helens and Blues would’nt need bail outs if it was anything like as popular as it is perceived to be by ill informed foreigners.

It's truly bizarre that we're meant to believe that what is or is not Wales' most popular sport is apparently down to the perception of Bruce McAussie from Canberra and nothing to do with the largest participation and spectator numbers.

I would cheerfully wager that much of North America is blissfully unaware that Rugby is even a thing but are hooked on Welcome to Wrexham.

IMO opinion we will not be playing Premiership rugby games at St Helens, the away support alone would sell it out. There were over 50,000 at the Principality stadium for Bristol v Bath this season, over double judgment day. Premiership rugby is on another level.

I'd hate to see Welsh Rugby clubs/regions or whatever at the mercy of franchises, the mess for the current state of Welsh rugby lies firmly at the door of the WRU in Westgate street, they took their eye off ball when the game went professional and failed to bring in the right people in to run the game in Wales professionally and allowed themselves to still be dictated to by the amateur clubs, grassroots rugby was left to rot meaning that the player base got smaller and smaller, when I played the club I played for run 3 teams and quite often 4 teams many other clubs did as well, lucky to be able to field two sides these days, although around the time that I packed it in 30yrs ago teams were starting to struggle field 3rd teams and even 2nd teams on to many occasions.

All down to the neglect of the WRU on the whole and moreso when we had a strong Welsh team which they failed to build on, Gatland warned them many times, but WRU kept their heads in the sand and revelled in the success of the Welsh team, whilst forgetting that the squad was an aging squad with little coming through the ranks and when most retired all at similar times the cupboard became bare.

They allowed the English rugby dominated schools to scoop up the players on that had showed they had the ability and talent to make it in the game, they then went on to play for rugby clubs in the English Premiership and a decent majority of those players have been lost in the system.

Dear me, I need a whiff after all that
