People's Lack of Understanding of Mental Health 08:01 - Jul 17 with 1187 viewsSwaneeRiver

Mental health in all it's forms is something few of us have managed to avoid.
There is a brilliant pinned thread on here where many of our posters have discussed their battle with Mental health and many others have offered their support
Yet yesterday one poster was suggesting many who suffer with mental illness could and should stop claiming benefit and get out to work.
What an unbelievable lack of empathy from a poster who has form for extreme views
Absolutely disgusting

First class post.

He needs to be given a rest from posting maybe so he can ponder over what he says.

That said, most will obviously agree with him because he was POTY some time back. πŸ˜’

Mental health problems cause real suffering and in very many instances will improve with therapy. However, at the risk of putting myself in the doghouse, I want to suggest that there are real issues about where the boundaries of psychological health and illness lie, and how far a given condition entitles a person to enter (what is known in the jargon as) the "sick role" and be released from the obligation to work to support themself that exists in most societies. Many experts have written about how the categories used to understand mental health conditions (such as those in ICD-11 or the DSM) change over time, and may be applied differently in different countries around the world. There is a school of thought that argues that problems in living that were managed by past generations are now medicalised so that they become subject to expert diagnosis, review and therapy (often drug treatment). Then there are the various critiques around current ideas about "wellness", including the allegation that research in this field unintentionally produces negative, problematised images of human beings that make people who cannot meet the threshold of "wellness" feel bad. So all I will say is that when numbers of persons claiming benefits linked to mental health conditions rises suddenly, and in a way that is out of kilter with trends in other countries, there are legitimate questions to be asked about the nature of the morbidity experienced. When 10% of working-age adults claim benefits for health-related conditions, I think we have to ask whether we are a wealthy enough country to release those with mild depressive or anxiety conditions from the expectation that they will work to help support themselves. In many developing countries around the world that lack a welfare state, people and their families do appear to find ways of coping with minimal state support.

Disability claims have DOUBLED costing Billions in four years. So explain please. Most depression related.

So depression is spreading exponentially right? Why is that. ?.

Most probably reading your posts, but seriously mental health is a subject you have no idea about like most of the subjects you post on, no doubt some try it on, but you are casting your net far and wide.

There's an excellent thread on here concerning mental health I hope the mods read your cavalier attitude towards it

I have not much medical knowledge on depression. One of my workmates had episodes but turned up for work every day as a freelancer.

I do not understand why people with depression cannot work with special allowances. Time off for example as needed.

I am for integration of all people into society. All must contribute if able. These are my basic principles.

Could this surge in mental issues be related to a liberal attitude too substance abuse and alcoholism? People ard promoting the legalisation of cannabis.

Why is the budget for inactive people rising so much? Explain.?

I would like to think the mods will take the same action against the people who pick on and gang up on posters without knowing anything about their mental health. The option of using the ignore button is itself ignored. Some people look for the users name just to jump on the bullying bandwagon. Great thread heading by the way. πŸ™ˆπŸ™‰πŸ™Š

I have no doubt some people use mental health issues as an excuse not to work, people will always find an excuse.

My colleague, in the van with me all day, he has bad mental health issues and he's on strong medication. he's a former drug addict and alcoholic, he was homeless but he dragged himself up by his own bootlaces and got his life back on track.

Every individuals experience of it is unique to them and we can't lump them all into one box and call them skivers.

My late wife developed ME in the 80's when it was called Yuppee Flu
Many had it and recovered
Others like my wife never did, but instead developed a load of other conditions
With ME she could have turned up one day with enough energy to work
However the next few days she would have to spend in bed recovering
She was depressed to the point of being suicidal when she had been ill for five years and was wheelchair bound
For the next 25 years she was constantly badgered by those who "knew" there was a job she could do.
In her working life ( all too brief ) she would jump over most people's heads and her desire to live a normal life never left her, even when she found she had terminal cancer at the age of 55
Yet there were still people like Res who were adamant there was work she ( and many in a similar position could do.
Understandably I get angry when I read such unbalanced right wing views

Sorry to hear that mate thing is though, I can't even call them right wing views. To me these are just stupid views, uneducated, ignorant at best and at worst views posted to deliberately uoset people.

Every case should be treated on it's own evidence and we shouldn't lump everybody in together.
There will be disabled people capable of working and there will be those who are not.

When I suffered a patch of bad health it lasted about 4 years but I recovered and went back to work, not everybody is si lucky.

Swanees post is deeply upsetting

I don't personally equate any illness or perceptions of it as politically nuanced

Lack of tact or simple insouciance has no boundaries

I also found the post very upsetting and there but for the grace of god any of us could be in a similar position. But what really grips me is Res still hasn't issued an apology to those he has offended. Sometimes it takes a man to admit you made a mistake.

You know nothing about me particularly my age. Assume all you like, but I have cherished every moment since my teens, I never expected to live this long for various reasons, I have and myself, friends and family are extremely greatfull. Those who don't like me don't really worry me. I just keep smiling.

❀❀ my friends and family are also extremely grateful that I'm still here. If you want to use illness cards I was diagnosed with lung cancer on xmas eve ( true story). I've since gone through 4 sessions of chemo with immunotherapy. I now have what could be up to 18 months of immunotherapy left, depending on future scans this could be alongside radiotherapy. πŸ˜ƒ keep smiling.

Here are some information

1. Over the last four years, there has been a large increase in spending on working-age health-related benefits, from Β£36 billion in 2019–20 to Β£48 billion in 2023–24, and official forecasts expect this spending to increase further to Β£63 billion in 2028–29 (all in 2024–25 prices.) Total health-related benefits spending for all ages has increased from Β£52 billion in 2019–20 to Β£65 billion in 2023–24. The increase in working-age spending has been mostly driven by an increasing caseload: from 2.2 million in 2019–20 to 3.2 million in 2023–24 for disability benefits (39% growth) and from 2.5 million in 2019–20 to 3.2 million in 2023–24 for incapacity benefits (28% growth).

This is happening in UK but no other Country..

The staggering rises are amongst work age people not pensioners. 1 million workers lost and now on benefits. An ethnic breakdown would be useful.

All people with health problems gave my sympathy. My issue is the statistics not individual issues. Why are 1 milliion extra workers off sick in the last 4 years ? Why is this not seen in other countries of very the same period.
