Second Tier Championship Podcast - Predictions on 06:41 - Aug 6 by Northernr
Doesn't one of those guys usually absolutely hate us cos he's a Derby fan?
They are both Derby fans. The mellower of the two has stated he usually arrives at his seat at least 3 minutes into the game and doesn’t see the point in arriving before the match kicks off.
Pretty much everyone else has us somewhere between 15th-20th (which I think is about right). These guys tend to err on the side of attention, so I think we’re just the unlucky club this season to be a viral shout in their ‘socials’.
If we finish 8th I’d be amazed and delighted

One of them also declared Zan Celar as an outsider for top goalscorer.

Must be something in the Buxton Water up there
Yeah. NTT20, the much more knowledgable and less grating pod, have us 18th and cite our lack of goals as the major issue. But that’s not going to get clicks

They've actually got us 17th. They just think there are too many unknowns: new manager; new striker to the Championship. But they also call us the 'most delicious blend of brawn and artistry' seen in the Championship. But admit it could work.
Right to be sceptical/wary, wrong to totally write us off as a mid-table side quite yet.

Tomatoes etc. There’s a group of teams 13thish to 20th who are basically the same and will probably finish within 6 points of one another. I’m not writing us off finishing 13th but if we finished anywhere near top 10 I’d be absolutely amazed. When you’re pining for Derby’s set of strikers you’ve got a problem.

It could change quickly though. If they were to come out tomorrow and say we've signed Kone up front, Lowe at left back, and Brian Central Midfielder who can pass forwards things would look totally different.
I'm not saying any of this is happening btw, just the difficulty in making predictions at this point.

Maybe it’s years of the PSR pessimism playing through my mind - I just can’t see those sorts of things happening without a sale. Love to be wrong, but as Steve said in the patron pods look at the money Boro, Norwich, Millwall are bringing in, that’s the player trading required to make serious moves. Would love nothing more than smart frees and small fees to get us up the table, but it feels increasingly like drop in the ocean stuff.
The more I look back at the last Warburton / Micky B seasons the more I despair about where we could be if we did what we should have done with the stars of that team.

Exactly. That's why they were unsure about where to put us. Too many unknowns, which is much more their point, especially with the manager, than just 'not enough goals' (which might be true too). I think most of us haven't got a clue especially as we don't know when Kolli and Frey are back and if Burrell can start/play at all on Saturday.

They rave about Poku. And then like our manager appointment when compared to some of the other clubs. Then you combine it with Dunne, Chair, Demebele and Varane makes us dark horses. That’s their view anyway.
I’m less concerned about central mid if Varane and Field are fit. Some cover would be nice. Issue as said is left back and of course a fit and fast forward.

Oh I don't know. I'm going to predict none of those things happen.

I wasn’t saying goals is the only issue, just that it’s the primary one. Only listened to it once so may be confusing it with one of the many other pods in the last week! I just don’t see where goals are coming from in this team as it stands, sure there will be more business done but I’m pretty confident it won’t be £5m on Kone.

Being Derby fans I thought they'd hate us but they seem to be very complimentary, describing us as the "good vibes club." Ryan had us down as 6th and Justin thinks we'll be 13th (which is a better reflection of where we're currently at IMO).

Very true. Lowe at left back would be a big relief. If Dunne is out for a while, we’ll need a loan or someone in at right back too…

Spoiler Alert:
They have us down as 8th just behind Leicester.

Let’s hope these fellas are right. There are some good things happening. I like the Stephan appointment. I like the Bould hire. Poku is a great signing. Burrell gives us much needed pace…
It’s just the overall squad, which worries me. That and the bloody injury situation. Williams has to get a handle on that. He is accountable for it. Stephan isn’t and Nourry isn’t.
If we finish 6th Stephan needs a statue.

Mbengue has played at RB, which would be fine if we didn't need him for CB/reserve CB. Again we're stuffed by injuries. We could have Field at LCB but then he may be needed in midfield because of injured Varane. I guess Akindileni could be back up CB, but dodgy if you've got an inexperienced LB in Larkeche and no Jimmy on the right.
LB and DM are on my prime wishlist atm because of the lack of cover in those positions.

Out of curiosity what position does Brian Centre-Midfielder play?

I'd be interested to see what their predictions were for the table last season. As has been said on here quite often, they clearly give opinion on games they haven't actually watched during the season, and never seem to have much knowledge of QPR when they cover us...

LSD, by the sound of it.
Still, Stuart Wardley was a thing once, so you never know.
Thank god somebody else has the Wardley seared to their brain. I thought it was just fever dream. Plucked from non league. Completely non league apart from a ridiculous ability to score goals. Mini legend.

If you keep Dunne, JCS, Varane fit all season, sign a left back, sign a CM, Burrell turns out to be decent and Poku, Chair, Dembele all fire then yeah... the team is good. But you are asking A LOT of things to happen
