Meghoma on 07:05 - Aug 18 with 1022 views | City_boy | It's only a loan and signing for Rangers which is not exactly a ringing endorsement. I am. not sure how you consider him to be full of potential and suggesting we have let a class player slip though our net, when he only played once for Saints (plus once for Brentford) and that was in the 3-1 defeat at Gillingham. We've seen many players be "rising stars" as kids and then end up playing for Weymouth two seasons later. One of the very best players I ever had the pleasure of playing in the same team as, was on the books at Fulham for three/four years and played I think a couple of first team games. Five years later he's in Hants Senior 1 - where he was undoubtedly a great player - but over a season would have half a dozen truly terrible games. Part of being a player with potential is delivering it week after week.

We didnt want to let Meghoma go, but he was in the last year of his contract and he made it clear he wouldnt sign a new deal, so we took the money, which wasnt a bad fee for a player who could have walked 10 months later for s small development fee. He spent most of the first half of the season on the bench for Brentford, getting off it just once for a 4 minute cameo, even when Brentford where winning easily as they did at St Mary's or for that matter losing badly, he didn't get a run out. Second half of the season he went to Preston, he started brightly but in the last 7 games of the season was an unused sub in 5 of them, playing in just 12 of the 19 games he could have played in.

Very true 901, I remember when Neil Maddison first broke into the Saints first team we were told that as a youngster he was rated more highly than Alan Shearer in terms of his future potential as a player. NM wasn’t a bad player and put in some decent performances over his 9/10 seasons at The Dell but with every due respect was no Alan Shearer,. As you rightly say, having potential does not always guarantee star billing further down the line. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
