It's not how it's seen it's how it's portrayed, I saw those far right nutters supporting the English women's football team, there were flags, banners hats and young girls joining in.

It's bizarre. All the negativity around flag waving achieves is to push people further to the right and give people like Stephen Y-L more ammo. Ironically probably the best way to solve the issue is for more people to fly the national flag in more places.

Court rules asylum seekers must be moved from hotel ... on 10:11 - Aug 21 by AnotherJohn | June figures now out show a 8% rise in the number of asylum seekers in Home Office funded hotels in Labour's first year in power. The number of hotels is down but number of occupants is up. https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/government/asylum-hotel-numbers-up-8-on-last- As mentioned above, this takes no account of hotels paid for by councils, which I would venture to guess has increased, given the way so many migrants have been waved through to refugee status and will not be able to find their own accommodation. Scotia doesn't seem to want to address the question of the total number of hotel places financed from public funds. Talk about obfuscation! [Post edited 21 Aug 10:16]

It's a totally different issue. We have to provide accomodation for asylum seekers, but not refugees. If a refugee ends up in a hotel / B&B it'll be under the rules and prioritisation as a British person. The problem is a lack of housing for those who need it either through citizenship or invite.

I genuinely cannot see how you cannot grasp the simple point that the change of status from asylum seeker to refugee does not reduce the overall bill to the public purse if a significant proportion of the same people remain in hotels. Of course, in presentational terms it suits the government to compartmentalise the different categories of recent migrants and understate the real cost. Re your new point, when we have been admitting around a million legal and illegal immigrants p.a. in recent years, and even allowing for people leaving the UK and churn in finding accommodation, housing supply has no prospect of keeping up with demand. It makes no sense to say the problem is that we don't build enough homes, when the financing of this would have been extremely problematic. You may recall that the question being debated is the total number and cost of recent migrants in hotels. [Post edited 22 Aug 7:03]

The difference is the 'if" there is no "if" with an asylum seeker, we pay for them to live somewhere. A Refugee can work and pay their own way, the may even be in a well paid job and buy their own property. We've been admitting millions of migrants (the vast majority legal) because we need them and should be providing them with a place to pay to live. Remove the need and immigration solves itself. Private companies have managed to rapidly build accomodation for students, at huge profit I don't doubt, the largest residential developments in Swansea are all student blocks. The government could have done the same. The fundamental problem is social and affordable housing stock has been allowed to dwindle and not migration.

Well, mentioning "if" suggests you do not believe that LAs are picking up some hotel bills. That brings us to the question of how many recent migrants are in hotels funded by councils, which I had already said is unclear and something we need to know. You imply that when an asylum seeker becomes a refugee their position regarding eligibility for local authority provision of accommodation is the same as for anybody else. This is incorrect because official guidance pushes LAs towards making special provision for refugees. For example, following the recent extension of the "move on" period (so that refugees can stay in asylum accommodation for 56 days after a positive decision), the Local Government Association reported that new guidance along the following lines was issued. "Newly recognised refugees will be signposted to councils for housing support and advice. Councils will be able to use the initial decision letter sent to newly recognised refugees as evidence of homelessness, with further information in an asylum move on process map. The Home Office’s accommodation providers also will contact councils with a list of those moving on from accommodation within two days of being notified by the Home Office. In SERCO regions, this is currently within five working days." https://www.local.gov.uk/topics/communities/refugees-and-asylum-seekers/refugees Are you really saying that significant numbers of persons with a recent grant of asylum are not still in hotels/B&Bs and HMOs paid for from public funds? They're only in that accomodation for a very limited time frame, then they join the queue of others in need of housing. As stated in the link:- "asylum applicant receiving a decision and having to leave their Home Office accommodation to be more in line with existing statutory responsibilities for those at risk of homelessness." Mrs Scotia is social worker, with responsibility for housing some refugees make extraordinary demands. One for American style fridge freezer this week alone. They didn't get it. Nobody would.

You mentioned prioritisation and if the guidance cited doesn't amount to that, I don't know what does. How can we know the accommodation will be short-term, when so many new people are getting asylum? And anyway wasn't the discussion about hotel occupancy, which is by definition short-term accommodation? It is likely (as recent data on the high % of households in receipt of benefits containing a foreign national suggests) that many refugees will eventually become long-term social housing tenants supported at least in part by benefits. As per usual, rather then have endless exchanges, I think we've got to the stage where the arguments are out in the open and people on the board will be able to make up their own minds. We took in thousands of Ukranians and nobody complained. They were given accommodation and allowed to work. They weren't destitute. The vast majority of Ukraine hasn't seen conflict and millions still live there and are getting on with their lives

Earlier this week, Epping Forest District Council was granted a temporary injunction to stop people being placed at the Bell Hotel in Epping. The court refused a last-minute effort from Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to intervene and get the council's case dismissed. If successful in its new bid to be involved, the government is then expected to consider a further appeal against the ruling itself. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the government was committed to closing all asylum hotels, but said it needed to happen in "a properly managed way". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy5p2ye95z9o

The guidance clearly states it doesn't. They get in the queue with the rest of those in need. You don't see refugees on the street because they aren't usually addicts and will spend their (usually earned) cash on getting a roof over their heads before anything else.

More High Court claims and arguements to follow , obviously the UK taxpayer will pay this appalling Governments legal fees and expenses , lawyers rubbing their hands already . Just hope The High Court stand firm and ask all the planning permission questions needed to just who set up these dives in the shortest time span . Hotel Owners and sell out merchants who get the big contracts should also be black listed . I will now check where I have had an overnighter in the past .
Court rules asylum seekers must be moved from hotel ... on 09:12 - Aug 23 with 235 views | AnotherJohn | I've been amusing myself by searching for information on how much councils are spending on (a) temporary housing support in general and (b) how much of this goes on recent migrants. It is very difficult to get anything more than anecdotal reports. However, there was a recent Lords debate on Local Authorities: Temporary Housing Costs, which gives some idea of the government central contribution to LA costs. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (Baroness Taylor of Stevenage) (Lab) gave the answers below. "My Lords, this Government recognise that homelessness levels are far too high and that this can have a devastating effect on those involved. It also places a huge financial strain on councils providing temporary accommodation. We have allocated an extra £233 million to councils directly for homelessness, taking total funding to nearly £1 billion this year (...) We currently spend around £30 billion annually on housing support. The April 2024 one-year local housing allowance increase cost an additional £1.2 billion in 2024-25 and will cost £7 billion over five years." This extra allocation is for temporary housing support, which would include hotels, B&Bs and HMOs, and this area does seem to be a current pressure point and something also funded from council tax . As far as I can see, this is quite separate from Home Office funding for asylum accommodation, so overall temporary accommodation support consumes a lot of money and I would be surprised if a lot of this isn't going to support refugees.

This why I believe Reeves is now coming for our pensions and properties, to pay for this snowballing financial mess that's been going on for years. I can see her pushing this through but then also going for an IMF bailout so the British people end up getting doubly shafted. Interesting, if worrying, times

They can be identified and unidentified with new identities. UK state seems totally incompetent in identifying anyone. Do the Taliban have a department retribution for all perceived traitors?.
