If only that was the case. But he ducks out of low crosses or is nowhere to be seen for them. Both strikers we have are poor and contribute very little. My point is Cullen gets away with it because he’s local yet VIP is given pelters when he is no worse than Cullen

Vipotnik is worse than Cullen, do you really think Sheehan plays Cullen because he is local. No he plays Cullen as he has no option because Vipotnik is useless. Neither should be up front but currently Cullen is the lesser of two evils.

Cullen has a football brain. He isn’t a centre forward and I don’t want to see him playing there any longer than necessary, but that alone puts him comfortably ahead of Vipotnik.

I wouldn’t be against that. He’s going to have the same problem as Cullen, but it’s not as if Cullen has ripped any trees up in the first two games. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Let’s face facts.Sputnik has to be in the top 5, for being one of the worst CF’s we’ve had to endure in a long time. He’s got the innate ability to be in precisely the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t really know if he can head the ball at goal, because he’s never in position to do so. He’s slow in thought and deed, his hold up play is mediocre, with the occasional success. His only weapon is a fierce straight shot. All this is not anywhere nearly good enough I’m afraid. If we’ve had enquiries for him we have to firm up these offers asap. Don’t forget he’s still got 3 yrs left on his contract, so we mustn’t be too choosy on any offer that removes him from the books. If we source a decent striker to add to the very good looking midfield we’re building, plus the back 4 is starting to gell, we are on the way to surprising quite a few teams. I’ve just renewed my season on the strength of it. COYS !

Whether people prefer Cullen or Vipotnik, I think most can acknowledge they both have obvious weaknesses as #9 With the midfield options we’ve got now, even a half decent all rounder would take us from the kind of team that wins a few and loses a few and finishes middle of the pack, to solid playoff challengers IMO. We don’t need a world beater to transform this team.

8 out of 10m chances converted by a striker occur when he gets ahead of his marker . This is the secret . Get across the last defender get your head / foot to the ball before he does. it requires bravery and strength to hold off a defender's challenge but more importantly it requires speed . I am not talking about 100m flat out speed but speed over ten yards that's it . If i was Vip I would do sprint reps from a standing start over no more than 10 yards . Face your own goal , on the word go , turn and sprint flat out 10 yards towards opposite goal . Repeat without turning but always from a standing start . 25 reps of each per session . How many times have we seen him slide in fractionally late to the ball missing the chance there were 2 of these on Saturday . i guarantee if he improves his standing start speed the goals will come. Andy Gray the ex Villa striker was a master of this .

I do agree with you and you’re absolutely right, if he got quicker over short distances he’d get more goals. I’ve always maintained though, his biggest problem is his mental speed, not his physical speed. He’s slow to anticipate chances, which means he’s slow to react. In fairness, he had three chances Saturday (if you include the one from Francos shot), scored from one but he was unmarked for all three of them. That’s a massive positive, because he’s managed to get away from markers in goal scoring areas. Was unlucky not to get a second.

Yes it isn't his physical speed, although he isnt rapid, its his mental speed. Hes been lacking that since he got here, his goal was a proper no9s goal, he anticipated the cross, got in front of the defender and got the header on target, hoping the goal and especially the way he scored it will kick him on.

How does the saying go the first 5 yards are in the head, it's all down to tactical awareness. On Saturday Vipotnik showed this normally he doesn't, I really hope it will spur him on.

Yes I agree , He's a big powerful lad who I think at times needs to convince himself that he belongs here at this level . The more he plays the better his anticipation will get in my opinion but if he does improve his standing start speed and anticipation then potentially he could blow defences away. Hard work is everything though and he 's got to want it badly - that goal on Saturday will have done him the world of good. If I was Sheehan I would be taking him to one side and telling him how good that was and praising him /bigging him up . Sometimes players need reassuring and praise to get them out of their shells and performing to their best. This is where good managers recognise the time to step in and get the best from their players.
