Where in the world? Non QPR 07:26 - Aug 22 with 3383 viewsoldmeadoniansR

It is always a lift to here from QPR fans from around the world. And recently I have been thinking about whether I will stay living in this house and this area for the foreseeable future. As such can you record the area you live in and what you like about it. In the interests of positivity three positives one negative. Start with the negative.

Hampton:London:England

Dislike: In over 10 years not found a pub that I particularly like.
LLike: Access to great open spaces (Bushyy Park, Richmond, River Thames. Safe place to bring up children. Close to M3 so can get out of London quickly.

Ramsey, IoM.

Negatives: cost of getting off (for me); opportunity cost in terms of entertainment/culture
Positives: friendly and safe; decent pubs; beautiful, empty, beaches and countryside.

Gijon Spain.

Positives. Very safe, has a beach, people generally keep themselves to themselves, 96% of the city is Spanish, which in these heady political times is actually a good thing for me as it corresponds with my first point very safe.

Negatives. Work is hard, making ends meet is hard and Spanish beurocracy and tax laws is insane and very Orwellian.... they have a gift tax for f sakes... parents can't send me money or I have to declare it and the state takes a cut.

Gijon!

I was there a few weeks ago, Spaceman!
I swear I even got the pronunciation riight. (ish).

What a beautiful spot!

I was walking through on my way to Santiago and really enjoyed that stopover. We all did. So much so that we all took a rest day and turned it into a little weekend.

Loved the beach, got a sneaky surf in, loved the harbour. Loved the buildings. Loved the vibe more than anything. It's hard to explain why you like a place when you only spend a night or two there, but we did.

So, I have a question:

More than one local told me that the Asturian name for their language/dialect is Babelo (vocally, so the spelling might be wrong).
One or two told me that the name derives/echoes from the Tower of Babel.

Now, I know that there's a tradition of winding up tourists with half-truths, and as an Irishman I may or may not have engaged in that same practice with gullible Americans.

But I would love if there was some truth in that little spin?
Any idea?

Is there a local name for the 'Asturian' language?

Born in Kingsbury NW London, lived there until I was 25.
Hate going back, nothing is left now.
Live on South coast between Southampton and Portsmouth for over 30 years via Reading for a few years (what a dump!).
Positives, space, lovely countryside and coast, easy access to both cities above, great country pubs.
Downsides, I guess everything is further away than London if you want to go anywhere north or east!
Mind you, currently in Jersey, took just over 3 hours door to door!

Quite a few Hampton R/s on here. I play Vets and walking football for Hampton Rangers - any of you get down there?
Live in Esher - long way from Acton where it started
Likes - Easy access to countryside, very safe, good pubs (Albert arms in particular)
Dislikes - about as middle class as it gets

I was, Ted.

Finished it a few weeks ago. Did the Camino del Norte route from Biarritz to Santiago. It was unreal. The ocean, the mountains, the camaradrie...difficult enough now, but still worth it.

Fair play to her, Ted!

I'm not religious, so I didn't do the stamps but walking into that square having done that walk and seeing everyone around you so happy, relieved, euphoric is an amazing feeling.

I recommend it to everyone here.

Whangaparaoa, Auckland, New Zealand.

Been here since 2012. Was in Guernsey, Channel Islands before NZ, Cornwall, England before Guernsey.

Pros.

1. Ranked one of the safest countries in the world.

2. Weather over the course of a year is much better than what I remember from the UK.

3. A much better work to live quality of life.

Cons.

1. I miss Europe being on my doorstep.

2. Can hide away when I'm QPR'd. 😂

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA

The “City of Five Seasons” (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter … and the time we take to enjoy life and the beauty of every day)

Plus side:
—My son went to great schools
—I have a beautiful home that would be difficult to afford in many other locations
—Plenty of bike trails (and decent breweries conveniently located along them)

Negative:
—I have to travel a fair distance to see my favorite bands; tours rarely come through our state
—I’ll list a second: “City of Five Smells” is a more fitting nickname

Singapore

Like: Safe, clean, low tax, and easy access to incredible surrounding countries.

Dislike: £9 pints, 24/7 work culture, you spend your life sweating!

Woodville, New Zealand
I'm a Kiwi, but have had stints living elsewhere on my OEs including Shipbourne, Kent (fond memories of The Kentish Rifleman) and Bremen, Germany.

Woodville
Cons:
Boy racers skidding up grass berms around town.
Lack of match day experience at NZ sporting events (try as we might, we just can't seem to match the atmosphere that you get at European football matches).

Pros:
Central to everything - the ocean, mountains, bigger cities (by NZ standards) are all within a couple of hours drive.
The outdoors - Some great tramping (hiking) spots nearby.
Relaxed - We are a pretty laidback, easy going bunch generally.

Fascinating replies. Lived in Chippendale Sydney for a year and worked in a warehouse in Warringah Mall. Amazing city loved the northern shores. Lived in Cowley, Oxford for a year when training to be a teacher. Loved it and the surrounds of Oxford have always appealled to me. Spent a month travelling in New Zealand and is hands down my favourite country. Would really love to live there.
Spent first 25 years of life in Boscombe Rd Shep Bush. Miss the vibrancy.

New Zealand is the most beautiful Country I've visited too.

Stunning, with so much variety.

Haute-Vienne...I hope it looks as beautiful as it sounds....

Haute-Vienne...I could live there...

It's quite rural, with a few decent size towns before you get to the main city of Limoges. Cattle and sheep are the main products of the department.
Avg house prices are < 100k €, the reason being lack of jobs.

I currently live in Bracknell, UK, but am shortly relocating to Edinburgh. That's in Scotland, by the way .

Bracknell positives:
- The town centre has finally been redeveloped and now contains lot of modern shops and places to eat.
- You do see a few fellow Rs, in fact, I regularly bump into Mel Johnson; the last time, he was wearing a QPR top . Phil Parkes occasionally does some work for one of my neighbours and was happy to talk all things Rangers when I saw him.
- There is a lot of green space around, including parks and forest, plus there are loads of cycle paths.
- There are lots of job opportunities locally, in fact, that's why we ended up here in the first place.

Bracknell negatives:
- Way too many scum fans
- A lot of the locals are braying, self-important show-offs.
- Lots of traffic and manic tailgating.
- We're a long way from the seaside, boo 👎

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Edinburgh. City of my birth and holds a special place in my heart. Such a lot of good stuff to enjoy, though can be pricey. There are quite a few upper middle class folk e.g. Morningside - but lots of down to earth people too. Good football teams as well.

Outside Lancaster, in the Cumbria/Lancs/Yorkshire no-man's land near Kirkby Lonsdale.

Pros:
Really near both the Lakes and the Dales
Beautiful countryside and hills
Only about an hour from Manchester if you like that sort of thing
Good cricket
Decent pubs

Cons:
Neighbour is Scouse
No-one talks proper

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Medway, England

Like:
- Plenty of local history (Rochester Castle/Cathedral/High St, Chatham Dockyard, Upnor Castle, Fort Amherst, Borstal, Charles Dickens, Isaac Newell, Shorts brothers, Will Adams etc).
- Easy to get to London, the countryside or the coast.
- Lots of decent pubs, restaurants, cafes etc and things to do if you know where to look but enough rough bits to keep living here reasonably affordable.

Dislike:
- The amount of litter, seems the local council have given up on keeping the streets clean, as have the locals.
