What’s the view on our recruitment dept? The head of recruitment has been here for over 7 years and seems to escape any scrutiny?
What are his and his teams football( not IT) credentials/ experience?
Or are they just part of the Nourry yes club

I think we have recruited some good players this summer.

But the back room / Board room appointments have been and are poor.

Sadly this is translating to the pitch where the players and team are / is disconnected.

It's pretty much the same team that was here under Les, I think the signings have been pretty good this summer, been one of the better summers we've had, if we do add Hayden or a similar midfielder I think we've done well

Honestly, a mixed bag. But none of our big money signings have worked out in a very long time.

IMO recruitment has been poor for years. For years we've been crying out for a box to box midfielder who can carry the ball.

Belk is lucky to still be in the job imo, but its certainly not all his fault. The transfer strategy has been non-existent due to the confusing hierarchys that have existed here over the past 7 years (and longer). Its been very difficult to identify one team/person who definitively signs the players. Hence the lack of a cohesive team and squad. I personally think this club desperately needs a Steve Gallen or Dean Austin type of Director of Football who know the English game and have a wealth of experience of building scouting and recruitment teams who pull in one direction to build a team of players who can showcase their strengths on modest budgets. To me as a fan looking from the outside, our club currently has a 27 y/o who talks a good game but cant back it up and bloke in a computer room in charge of this stuff. But we've been losing 5, 6 and 7-1 before they both got here so it's not all on them either. It's a continous culture of failure set by owners who don't really know how to hire the right people or set clear structures.

I think the main issue is that we're so obsessed with stats and XG that we've forgot to actually go and look at players in the flesh. No Scout with a sane mind would have said that Madsen could handle the championship. Yet he we are with him on our hands and it's like playing with 10 men.

IMO...

There have been multiple good signings in isolation over the last 18 months or so, but the sum of the parts is far less than the parts themselves. Indeed overall I'd have a moderately negative view of overall recruitment for three reasons, all of which have been mentioned many times on the forum:
1. The times that big money has been spent, it has been spent very poorly. Madsen the absolute case in point (somewhere between 2 and 4m on a player profile which was not then answer to any of our problems, before we even saw him play).
2. Recruitment is entirely unbalanced, it does not focus on where the team is actually lacking. We have only three CMs in the team, we played them all on Sat and got dicked 7-1.
3. Let's just say for a minute we're on board with the idea of a "play out from the back game model". In this case, players should be recruited to fit that game model. And yet we keep recruiting players who can't hold the ball and progress it forwards.

The rumoured Saito signing is a case in point. I like Saito, rate him highly, and in isolation he's a good signing albeit maybe a bit expensive at the rumoured 2.8m. But the problems we are facing are everywhere but AM/wing. If anyone watched Sat and thought "the answer here is to get another winger" they are simply mental. I'd also say he maybe fits the "game model" better than e.g. Dembele, but I'm not sure he's a great fit for the game model... and if we need players to hold and progress the ball, why did we pay 2m for Dembele again?

While there are clearly questions to be asked of Belk, I'd say the flaws in the transfer plan highlighted above come more from the top...

Head of Recruitment is given the parameters by the DoF as to what type of player to identify. He doesn't make the signing, that decision would usually be the DoF in consultation with the head coach.

In defence of Belk, he is only doing what those higher up ask him to do. We've tracked Rudoni and Edwards, but failed to make offers for either, that's not his fault.
On the other hand Poku we followed for 4 years and signed him.

I'd actually look at the DoF over the 7 years Belk has been at the club. This year recruitment has been good, last year poor. Under LF, I'd say it was pretty poor overall.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

We should probably sack Les then, I suppose.

Can't wait for the upturn in results once that happens.

Probably the one thing that we can all agree on, is the need for some steel in midfield. There is no escaping the fact that we have been way too soft over recent seasons and that area is sadly lacking.

Madsen and Celar were awful recruits, no denying that. Celar is going and Madsen must surely be in last chance saloon. Morgan has potential, but is not yet strong enough for this league.

Saito coming in would have made no sense, but for the injury to Chair.

An experienced Championship left back is incoming, but we absolutely must, without fail, use the Eze money to bring in a solid, proven, experienced number 8.

we have a squad small in stature
many players who cannot get fit, SO HOW DO THEY PASS OUR MEDICALS? HOW POOR OUR THE MEDICALS?
we look slow and maybe unfit?
rarely do our teams seem solid, together and willing to do what is needed to get a result.
no leader of the pitch ?
GOALS WIN GAMES, why can't we find a scorer who can get 15 or more a season? last scorer with 20+ thompson? heidar? adel? years ago.
we have spent and usually got poor vfm.

Just to comment on this summer’s business, fwiw, I think that we’ve actually made some really good signings and with the return of Hayden, I would venture to say that it has been really positive. If RND does come in on loan, then we will have addressed pretty much every area. Saito would be the cherry on top.

It’s what we’re doing with them that is my biggest question. Fitness, strategy, the basics. Walsh instead of Nardi etc. playing players out of position. What is going on?!? I’m no Nourry apologist, imo he has way too much interference on the day to day running of things. Signings, generally good, implementation not there yet by any means.

Let’s see what joy Charlton brings.

Celar abd Madsen in particular clearly have not worked out, and we spent big money (for us anyay) on them.

This season I think pretty good, some still a risk but that's where we are still, but Hayden, Kone especially Dunne renewing and maybe Saito plus a left back with other signings is pretty good I think.

As the poster above says though, it's how they all fit and play in the system we want that is important.

Poll: Will we stay up?

Finally, somebody with a considered take.

Recruitment team will be given a brief for what is required. They'll try to find players who meet the brief. But the final word will be with the DOF , CEO and Head Coach.

If you're going to be critical, criticise those who did the brief.
