The amount of negativity from a majority of posters is astounding, but unfortunately not surprising.

Apart from there being a dozen or more teams in the league with aspirations of promotion, several others would also claim the same "heritage" as SFC - e.g. big stadium, long record of premiership/div 1 status, strong support base, etc. And a few are still benefitting from recent parachute payments or owners who have injected ££££s, so also apparently would have "cash to splash".

As a Saints supporter from the 60s - with fond memories of the likes of Kirby, O'Brien, Knapp, Hollywood etc, I can also recall the regular moans about players not being good enough and Ted Bates being an intractable manager with no imagination or common sense. And huge misgivings when McMenemy came on the scene!

But the moans were tempered with a dose of realism, and the criticism was nowhere near as personal and vitriolic as it seems today.

It would be rather pleasant if we could share more positivity on this forum - and I appreciate that Nick always tries to put a positive spin on things - thanks!

We should ask ourselves why some players who get regularly lambasted - e.g. Stephens, Baz have been the first choice for several different mangers - do fans genuinely believe that they know better than football professionals?

And a p.s. - Starting to question the manager after a handful of games with a bunch of players he is still assessing is just plain daft. Give him time to breathe and let's get behind him ..........and the team.

Is it a delusion to think that Saints were top dogs in the south, above Pompey and Bournemouth (Brighton too), proud consistent members of the premier league? Perhaps that was a dream? Now we are way down the pecking order. Time to wake up I guess. Just accept it, it's all fine. Be realistic and accept we can't compete with Bournemouth. Try telling that to West Ham fans, Newcastle fans or Everton fans, who simply won't accept failure.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for people to point out that we are underperforming. We are 13th and level on points with Watford and that looks fair based on yesterday. That's not good enough. Last week we were beaten at home by Stoke who themselves were beaten at home by WBA this week. That shows the gap between us and the top teams at the moment.

With the resources and parachute payments we have it would be unacceptable to finish 13th. Are you aware of the spending advantage that exists between us and teams like Watford? Just in terms of parachute payments alone, this year we will receive about £49 million while the likes of Watford get nothing. That sort of gap didn't exist in the 60s. If we don't get promoted quickly we will lose that financial advantage and become just another Watford. There is a long way to go but it seems pretty reasonable to me that people point out that things need to change.

It looks like it. I hope Sport Republic aren't paying him much. He obviously hasn't done his research if he thinks we had a big stadium heritage. Maybe he's from Portsmouth.

I have more interest in hearing what his favourite biscuits are to be honest…….

And some of the fanbase are thinking us getting a result over Pompey is a guaranteed…..oh dear, could we end up with egg on our face shortly?

Yes agreed.
There are many ex top flight clubs wallowing around in The Championship.
The longer you stay in this league the harder it is to get out of it.

Sunderland fans are enjoying The Premier League currently and long may it continue for them.

I also watched the Saints teams way back and would say last seasons was the worse I’ve seen. We are still seeing the fall out from last year. Anyone thinking we would turn things round in a matter of weeks is deluded. It’s going to take time and with our new recruits and a few out the door we are already seeing improvements. What makes you think a very poor side from last year would waltz up under a new manager and storm the Championship ? Give the manager a chance ffs.

Well said templarinexile.
We have just suffered a terrible and quite frankly embarrassing season in the Premiership, where we won just one game at home and employed 3 managers.
Will Still is a young manager with a hell of a job turning things around,we should give him all our support to do so.
To turn on him after just 4 games is ridiculous.
I understand the frustration ,we all think we know better but we are not in a position to change things apart from supporting the team when they are on the pitch.
I do remember the 60s,Ted Bates and the huge misgivings when McMenemy came on the scene! But that turned out ok in the end.
I worked with Hollywood,he even played for our works team.
Harping on about how we were the best team in the south and far we have fallen wont help,we have had our good times and we will again.
Just don't expect miracles, well not immediately.

You weren’t on the receiving end of Denis’s tackles were you ? He didn’t take any prisoners.

Sub me Brian O'Neil for Jimmy Gabriel and I'd put my money on McGrath & O'Neil. At least Gabriel wore shim pads whereas O'Neil showed Dibling the way by playing with his socks rolled down!
Big John McGrath was the first player I can remember seeing wear a short sleeved shirt in mid-winter.

Anyone who thinks Stephens and Bazunu should be in the 1st team need to follow another sport, they're wholly inadequate, they've been used for years in various divisions and they're woefully short of the required standard.

There is a credibility gap between those supporters who cling to visions of the team as having enough quality and depth to get us near promotion this season and those who take a more pragmatic approach.

I am in the latter camp.

First, last season will have damaged some players in terms of their faith in the club. That should not be an issue for a professional, but professionals are people too. It will come to the fore when we're chasing an equaliser away from home against a team we should be beating and where we need that extra 2% effort.

Second, I think all but one Champ side has a new manager this season. I think that will help us because I suspect that few teams have yet to settle on a tactical system that the manager wants. It's a bit of a race to get there first. I suspect that Mr Still is pretty good but he is inexperienced at this level and I think the above race is not one he will win.

Third, yet again we have done transfer business late and in effect the first team for the season will not be settled until late September/early October. That might be 6 games in. If we have 10 points from those games and not perhaps 12 or 14, the difference might be enough to deny us a chance at promotion.

Fourth, the owners are running more than one club. They want profit across the portfolio and that means we are just one asset and if they feel that player X should be moved elsewhere, that is what will happen. A manager will struggle with the uncertainty.

Lastly, the trauma of last season will take a long while to fade not only with fans but with players and staff. Add in new manager, new players, a different type of football* and realistically I'd settle for top half of the table at the end of the season.

*I was encouraged by the comment from Still after the Ipswich game when he observed that under pressure a "short pass inside" was a habit from last season that the players need to unlearn. He is absolutely correct.
