Is the game model now binned? 14:32 - Aug 31 with 1428 views | dmm | This is now the third consecutive season that the 'passing out from the back' game model has been abandoned, and in doing so, we've improved. In his post-match presser, Stephan intimated that a horses-for-courses approach is needed, but if the squad cannot execute a game model, why go back to it? Unless and until we have players who can play a more technical passing game, a more direct approach is surely one we'll have to use.

Is the game model now binned? on 14:41 - Aug 31 with 1320 views | mart_Goblin | I think your last sentence there answered your own question . We can play nice football and patterns of play without p*ssing about with it in our own 3rd. Only the very top teams can do it and they have stopped doing it now anyway . To think our players could do it for any period of time successfully was ‘uneducated’ , arrogant and actually not fair on the team themselves . The last thing Jimmy Dunne wants is to receive the ball in our own corner of the pitch under pressure. Got to give the players a chance . Let’s hope yesterday was Julien Stefan finally exerting his identity on things . Hallelujah [Post edited 31 Aug 14:42]

Is the game model now binned? on 14:45 - Aug 31 with 1275 views | Hunterhoop | As I said on the thread with his post match conference, he seemed very keen to use the “adaptation” and refer to how you need to adapt your approach in this league. Found that very interesting. I think it was a none too subtle way of saying a set game model isn’t wise. Only twice did we try to play out from a goal kick yesterday: one Morrison went long immediately, the other Walsh almost gifted them a goal. Going long with our goal kicks, competing for the first and second ball, and playing from there a) confused Charlton and was a big part of the reason we dominated the first half an hour - Nathan Jones admits this in his press conference and said they weren’t expecting that - and, b) it took the pressure off our players in a key game at home with a tense crowd.

You do have to recruit or bring through players who are good at it, though. And I don't think we have. We still retained the 4231, though, so even if we veered away from the model yesterday we didn't abandon it completely.

"I think it was a none too subtle way of saying a set game model isn’t wise." Or that there has to be the freedom to change within the model. Ajax and Barca have long been applauded for having a game model but Van Gaal's Ajax were more defensive than Cruyff's and Enrique's Barca were more direct than Guardiola's. And Stéphan should have the freedom to go long with kick-outs or play two sodding holding midfielders away to a Coventry side that always rip us apart down the middle.

‘To think our players could do it for any period of time successfully was ‘uneducated’ , arrogant and actually not fair on the team themselves.’ I think that’s a bit harsh on Marti Cifuentes.
Is the game model now binned? on 15:18 - Aug 31 with 1040 views | theone_theonly | I don’t think the role of the game model is to micromanage the tactics used in game. At the fans forum the head of methodology said that the game model involves some version of a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1, which we stuck to yesterday, and playing on the front foot, which I think we did pretty well. If the game model is intended to be the be all and end all, what’s the point of the manager then? We hired a manager with good pedigree in France who has won trophies in an era of dominance by PSG. Managers are supposed to be flexible in order to win games which JS has shown he can be. So no, I don’t think we have binned the game model. I would say it’s more a case of JS realising that he can’t play his ideal brand of football and instead adapting to fit the league and players, whilst not deviating to far from what we were doing previously in terms of formation and personnel.

Jones commented how we changed our approach and it caught them out . | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Is the game model now binned? on 16:26 - Aug 31 with 713 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | In fairness, it's only the 2nd season, not 3rd, that the 'game model' has been in place. We need 2 x CM, one minimum before the deadline, or else it's gonna be a long old season. We need someone who can put their foot on the ball and play it forward. How fcking hard can it be!

He did play a wonderful first time long diagonal pass in the 1st half and another one to pick out Jimmy Dunne, but aside from that I thought he could have done a bit more to hel keep possession or create more in the 2nd. As for the new method played you yesterday, especially the long goal kicks, let’s hope for more to come .
