Mods, by all means remove if this is morbid a thread

As it’s something that it’s a master of time , how do we prepare for the end

It’s something we often find difficult to discuss even with ourselves

Be lucky

Make a will and have power of attorney in place, health and finances.

Sort out personal finances and keep all the details in one place with PoA.

Declutter particularly your loft.

There is nothing worse than having to clear up a mess and sort things out after someone passes on. It's the last thing you will do so do it properly.

Thanks and a good morning
Yeah, I’ve done all that and make sure any secrets you have are shredded before the family finds out

I was thinking more of the personal and mental side of our mortality
Being in police always reminded me how quickly life can end when least expected so assume nothing
People get into a car and believe they will automatically complete their journey to their destination

It’s a balance of planning for a future and accepting you might be wasting your time
It’s a fine line

Not strictly true, this may be worth a read. Plus a chat with a decent solicitor/accountant can lift your thresholds. As a general rule of thumb it can be £1M for a couple with children if the correct paperwork is completed.

Some interesting detail in that link, some of which I had forgotten. Successive governments have been freezing limits & you can bet your life this government will be making it even more difficult & complicated. Bottom line is that more & more people are going to fall into the inheritance tax trap if they do not plan efficiently

I tell everyone you can't just die you have to plan for the inevitable, otherwise you will just give your hard earned money to the government you hate for them to waste.

I don't know. All I do know is when my sister was told she was terminal she did all the sensible things, the will, putting everything in order and after that I spent a lot of time with her, more time even than her husband and kids and we talked a LOT.

She wasn't ready to die, we talked, we laughed , we cried over and over. Then when she was right at the end the nurse said she was really hanging on and had I given her permission to go. She'd held on for 4 days unconcious.
I leaned over and whispered in her ear,it's ok sis, you don't have to suffer any more, we'll all be ok it's time for you to rest , she started going downhill immediately and less than 30 minutes later she was dead.

Before you can prepare to die I think you have to accept it's happening. She didn't want to accept not seeing any of us and especially her grandkids again so she held on.

Those who really are ready, have prepared and have come to their time, they are those who take the assisted dying route, in my opinion. They go willingly. Those who aren't ready, who aren't prepared, they hang on as long as they can.

That includes your house value, unused private pension, etc. As stated you need to have your paperwork & Will in good order. You need to be careful in Spain too - the taxes on Brits since Brexit have increased significantly especially for non residents, non EU citizens etc

With more people being auto enrolled into government sponsored pension funds and building up a pension pot. There will be more funds an individual has built up. People need to look at more than property and cash in the bank.

Whats left of my pension will go to my wife. Our hose value and everything else lumped in doesn't take us to 650k. O'm too busy spendingm, doing things than trying to acquire wealth.
What we have been trying to do is give our son good advice so he is financially stable in the years ahead but the house aside, there won't be much else for our son when we go.

I'm not religious by any means and I can't understand why I believe this but when I go I take comfort that I will see again all those who I've loved an lost and those who pass after me.

I’m currently entering the departure lounge hoping that the flight will be delayed for the next few years. My policy for the last 5 or 6 years has been to invest any spare money into our daughters pension fund and ISA, also 6 years ago we opened a junior stocks and shares ISA for our grandson and pay a certain amount per month into it, the majority of the investments are in the S&P 500 with a smaller amount in the UK stock market. They are both doing very well especially the S&P 500.

Just enjoy yourself. Make memories, have fun. It’s literally the only thing that matters. Some people get hit by a bus in their prime, some die at days old. If you’re lucky enough to get to old age and have time to ‘put your affairs in order’ you are incredibly lucky and probably in the top 1% of humans who have ever lived. A comet could hit the earth tomorrow. None of us know when that clock stops ticking.
