Should Saints Bring Back Player Who Has Great Record For The Club 14:32 - Sep 1 with 1332 viewsSaintNick

Damion Downs is being written off after two games . so perhaps we should look at a player who was outstanding in his first half dozen games for Saints.

The player scored a goal and an assist in his first 7 games and ended his time here with 4 goals & 4 assists in just 661 minutes of Premier League football,

Thats a goal in every 165 minutes of football, or a goal every two games in terms of 90 minute matches.

Come back Michael Obafemi all is forgiven

If we're getting silly let's go for David McGoldrick or Brett Ormerod.
I see that Jamie Vardy has just signed for an unheard of foreign club, now he'd have done a job for us this season.

Fans are harsh i agree.
Downs should have plenty of game time between now and Xmas where we can make a more accurate assessment of him.

I have to say though, after watching a FC Koln game on YouTube in which he played , he didn't impress me.
Definitely more of a Mara than Che Adams style player.

Barely touched the ball and gave it away cheaply on a couple of occasions.
The plus was he assisted a goal.

Che Adams now theres a player who was vilified on a weekly basis for his lack of goalscoring ability, yet is now held up as the standard to judge others by lol

So what is the clubs aims this season? Is it to survive in the championship or get promoted. Signing the likes of Downs wont get the club promoted. Surely it would be better Nick who kieffer Moore at 2mill (a 1/4 of the cost we wasted on Downs)? , get promoted and rake in the prem money again.
As i said on another thread who do you think will score more this season? Downs or Moore?

Ps you keep going on about Ballard, but neglect to say hes had 2 very serios injuries. Ironically with his youth record, had he played for Man Cities academy we would of happliy paid 10mill for him and afforded him a decent chance.

Poll: Has the Ross Stewart deal already paid off as Nick says?

Its to get promoted, so I judge the strength of the team against the last promotion side as the starting point.

If we judge Downs after the first 4 games of the season, it doesn't look impressive, compare him with Adams and it gets even less impressive Adams scored in each of the first 3 league games, after that he went 13 League games without scoring he got a bit of stick back then for that.

Whever signed Kieffer Moore for Wrexham wasn't doing so on his stats over the past few seasons, last term 5 goals in 27 games, 2023/24 8 goals in 26 games, 22/23 4 goals in 27, hardly ground breaking stats.

I havent got a clue who will score more, however I think with a couple of wingers coming in Downs will have a good chance of scoring more.

With Ballard I know he has had his injury problems and maybe that has halted his progress, but we are judging him on what he has done and not his former potential, last season he played 35 games and got 3 goals in League 1

Could you imagine JV coming here. He'd certainly need to do a lot to win us lot over with the vitreol that gets thrown at him from down here. Well certainly from me, he's always come across as a nasty piece of work as well as being a nemesis for us with his goal scoring record against us!
But that would still change with a couple of goals I suppose!

I see Ballard has signed a permanent deal with Leyton Orient, good luck to the lad, I hope he stays injury free and scores plenty of goals for them. Seems as if a few Clubs wanted him and the O’s manager is ‘over the moon’ Ballard chose Orient above other suitors.

Nick, talking of Obafemi, I see he’s possibly on the move today to a Bundesliga 2 club which is a League Soors is not adverse to shopping in, so, if MO does make the move and pulls up plenty of trees Spors could have him back through the door in January 😀

The story of Obafemi moving to Germany was what prompted my comment, I would not write off Spors spotting his stats if he does well and buying him back for £8 million.

Good luck to Dom Ballard, I wish him well for the future, I just find it strange that so many has faith that he would be the next big thing at St Mary's.

I'm certainly not going to be driving him to Leyton Orient

Im not sure you have a good eye, when it comes to spotting a decent player. Last year you gushed about our new signings saying to a man they were all hits and good enough to keep saints to stay up.

Today you have said on another thread about just looking at goals scored........ You have literally just done that. Go back and watch Moore bully our back 3 on the opening day. Thats what we are missing.

Fact is, Downs is not good enough at this moment in time. He needs to go away and learnt his trade.

I know where Butty is coming from.

Rather than gamble 8m on a player that will likely fail at both this level and certainly the Prem.

Why not bring in a short term cheap option .
I appreciate Moore is a Wrexham player but he's a good example of an experienced championship striker.

He may not be prolific but he causes massive problems for defenders and makes goals for his team...hence only 6 goals last season but at Sheff Utd who got 90 odd points.

Also Che got 17 in 40 games for us in the Championship.
Similar to Moore he is a focal point and holds up the ball to bring others into the game.

i.e. they are both centre forwards... a type of player that we don't have since we sold Tall Paul.

You do realise Downs has said in a recent interview with The Athletic that:-

- heading the ball is not a strength of his (so not sure wingers will make much difference)
- and neither is pressing

He seems so much like Super Sekou, it is beyond uncanny.
