Totally underwhelming window yet again. 20:29 - Sep 1 with 1556 viewssaintmark1976

£80 odd million for Dibling and Fernandes and we once again end up without a proper Centre Forward.

There is absolutely no chance whatsoever that Downs,Stewart,Archer and Armstrong will score enough goals to get us promoted back to The Premier League.

Downs looks completely out of his depth.

Stewart is constantly injured.

Archer is a journeyman footballer with nothing more than an average goal scoring record.

Armstrong is a shadow of the player he was a couple of seasons ago.

Thanks very much yet again Sports Republic.

Poll: Where will we finish in the upcoming season?

I'd say Armstrong only scored 22 goals, last time we were in the championship, was mainly because we had burly Che Adams mixing it up around him, holding up play etc. Armstrong fed off that quite successfully...we don't have that presence this season which is why he'll struggle to score.

We have made some decent signings and cleared out some dead wood and those who didn’t want to be here BUT we needed a striker and a keeper and for that we will pay

I think the plan is that goals will be more evenly spread around the team, the way Will Still wants to play. I suspect his wingers and midfielders will weight in with more than ours did during our last promotion campaign. So, the strikers will not need to get as many as last time.

Does anyone have to hand the list of all our goalscorers in the last promotion campaign?

Underwhelming?
We’ve got rid of about 20 players and signed 9 5 or 6 of which look to be exciting signings, this place must be the most negative Saints site, maybe it’s because of the age of poster.
Anyway I think we’ve done great business and from Pompey onwards results will improve significantly.

100%. One number which nobody seems to have noticed is the extraordinarily high number of assists secured by Fellows, Azaz and Scienza. I suspect that this could be behind the thinking for Janders too. Looks like the club have seen a metric they want to improve and acted upon it.

I think there is a point that a lot of people may have missed here. Being that we have brought in people to create and people proven at this level, perhaps with them doing their job better than what we had before, the pressure will come off the midfield and defence more, as we attack and create more, forcing teams to sit back more. So all those players who we think are weak thus far this season, may now become better as they have better players around them, allowing them to do their job better. See what I mean? Downs might start scoring once he gets better service and finds his confidence. Downes in MF might start performing like he did two years back, now he has less pressure on him from the opposing team, as we hopefully dominate more. I am eternally hopeful of this scenario.

Yes it was an underwhelming window. The big picture is that this year is the best chance we get for promotion. Next year our parachute payments reduce and soon afterwards disappear (like we will do if we're not promoted by then). We had plenty of money coming in and plenty of money freed up from the wage bill - and we haven't really used it.

We needed to have a squad that put us in the top 2. We shouldn't be relying on the lottery of the play-offs. I don't think we've got that because of 2 critical weaknesses: goalkeeper and centre forward. Those are the 2 most important positions on the pitch and I think we're weak there. If things don't go well, that weakness will affect the confidence of the rest of the team.

However, you don't have to be great to be promoted from this league, so if WS does his job we've still got a chance. We should have given ourselves a great chance and we didn't, but even so we've still got a chance.

I am sure this is a two year project.
We are building a stronger team gradually and in a considered fashion.

Of course, that team only finished 4th, 9 points off the automatic promotion places. It wasn't a great season. We conceded 22 goals more than Leicester. Poor goalkeeping from Bazunu and McCarthy let us down.

But, still, we had 2 strikers scoring plenty of goals, as well as goals from midfield, where we had players like Stuart Armstrong and Carlos Alcaraz.

I think its a 6/10 window. We have signed 3 proven championship players, the rest no one has ever heard of and it looks a like the usual scatter gun approach.

Yes, three proven championship players in. Can't complain about that.

Players we've never heard of coming in: we've seen a lot of that in recent years, so let's see if Johannes Spors has done any better than his predecessors in terms of picking winners (rather than the likes of Djenepo and Mara).

And we have got shot of sure deadwood, but we've also lost Ramsdale, KWP, Dibling and Fernandez.

I think we're weaker. Hope Will Still can now prove me wrong.

We're definitely weaker, there's no doubt about that. The players we had last year that were possibly good enough to play for a PL side were: Ramsdale, KWP, THB, Jan B, Big Les, Fernandes and Dibling. They've all gone with the exception of THB. We've also lost Tall Paul who wasn't PL standard but is better than the other options at centre forward.

We've got some decent players in but there's a reason they come to us for £10m or so rather than going to a PL side.

So, we're definitely weaker, but you don't have to be PL standard to do well in this league.

I think it’s been a good window although another decent striker would have been good.

I completely agree with what you’re saying though we have bought well strengthening the midfield and wingers and hopefully they will feed the strikers better as well as scoring a few themselves . We all know Armstrong will score loads in this league if he has a good supply, same for Archer.

In defence I think Wood will come into his own he played well at Watford . We still have THB too.

Why dont we actually give the players that have arrived a chance before we pass judgement, two years ago it was the same moaning about a lack of quality yet we still got promoted, all we can do is get behind the team and the manager and see what happens

One thing is for sure though, there is no need to get nasty about the players themselves, as long as they are trying that is all we can ask.

You do talk a load of bollox sometimes Nick. Where am I getting nasty about the players who have come in?

I wasn't "moaning" I was merely pointing out that we are weaker than last year. Do you deny that? Is it no not allowed to speak the truth?

When you say 'all we can do is get behind the team and manager and see what happens', do you ever wonder that moderating an online forum, the whole object of which is to mouth off about the Club, might not align with your core values?

It is going to take more than one transfer window to sort out the mess we have found ourselves in. I think they have made a pretty good fist of moving out a lot of the dead wood so far. The players they have brought in look to have the qualities we need. We have brought in a new striker. Ok, Downs might not be another Lambert but we haven’t seen much of him yet and, with hopefully better supply, he and the other strikers will get more chances and stick more away. The season starts now. Personally I am feeling more confident about than I was before.

I agree and 2 of those players were taken from teams that should be around us, so we have got good players and weekend the other teams seems like a win win.

We seem to have changed our approach a bit with a lot more players from abroad who may take time to adapt to the English game and the more physical nature of the Championship.

Last time the players we signed seemed to have more experience of this:

Charles
Manning
THB
Brooks
Downes
Fraser
Rothwell
