4 yellow cards 13:30 - Sep 10 with 7882 views | dingdangblue | Mani D is due a suspension if he picks up another yellow card. We really need him against Southend, Carlisle and Forest Green. I think its highly unlikely he's going to make all 3 games unfortunately.

4 yellow cards on 12:59 - Sep 14 by 442Dale | According to Savage in his erratic interview, Scunthorpe had chances to put the game to bed but former Dale keeper McNicholas kept FGR in it. Don’t think we have a strategy to defend one goal leads at all. More we look to get games won as soon as possible, as McNulty has mentioned in interviews when we’ve missed chances to go even further ahead - Braintree most recently. Then if we don’t we’ve shown we can still control games whatever the lead is. That’s the Parkin tactic we saw work to great effect too. |
My point is: you think you can control a game (as per the Scunny example) - until suddenly you can't. It's not a tactic, it's a position of ceding control which we've managed to get away with... so far

Yet many pointed to our inability to control games after taking the lead last season, rightly so. Southend being the perfect example when McNulty made awful subs and we didn’t ’sit in’ when doing so would actually have been better! Instead we were still vulnerable in behind and we lost the game. I don’t think we’ve ceded control in any game so far. The Brackley anomaly aside, we’ve always looked comfortable and in control. Even when not at our best. But yes, of course the opposition play a part and may actually score themselves. That’s football.

We didn't look comfortable against Wealdstone in the second half, Sutton, or yesterday against Truro. You admitted that yourself yesterday in one of your posts on another thread. We lost control of the game. The mindset of sitting back and trying to defend a lead doesn't win you this league. [Post edited 14 Sep 14:04]

It's more about continuing the good habits that got you into the lead in the first place, then countering any changes the opposition are sure to make with our own changes. I agree, it's never quite that simple but we've now got the squad to do that If the opposition are stepping on the gas to get an equalizer, it offers more opportunities to exploit gaps in their defence, and if we're good enough, that's exactly what we should be doing more often than not It's still early days, and no-one's complaining at being top of the table. Staying there is now the focus, and giving the opposition less than a sniff when we're in control

Yep said we were poor yesterday in the second half as we lost control of the game by not keeping the ball well enough, poor passing being the reason nothing tactical. Still never felt uncomfortable, similarly against Wealdstone and Sutton. We defend our box well and have a good shape. That’s ensuring we get results in tighter games so far. As DAlien says, when the opposition have the ball in our half we still need to be able to exploit them. Which we often do on the break. Alternatively, we could pass it around at the back and take the heat out of the game. Or we could go forward and play a high line like against Southend in the playoffs when leading. Facts are, we need to find ways to win games. A crazy selection aside, we have done just that in every single game. The tactics are working, because we have employed different ones in different games. Challenge now is finding the one that works against the teams around us. [Post edited 14 Sep 15:09]

Well we see games differently then which isn't a problem. I thought it did feel uncomfortable yesterday and also in the other games. Anyway, as you say lets see if we can find a way of playing that works against the teams around us. Maximising the points against the lesser teams could prove to be more important than the results we pick up against our rivals and we've done very well in that respect up to now.

The manager was absolutely correct to play Mani from the start. Todays game was just as important as next weeks, they are all must win games. We have a back up striker who can cause Southend a lot of problems and also Hendo, a opportunity now for somebody else to shine. |
I didn't suggest Mani be "dropped " per se......simply have him on the bench, see how the team fare and introduce him as and when the game demands. Totally agree that the lad is the Club's best asset and needs to be on the pitch as often as possible.

Dropped to the bench for a important league game? No, that's being daft. You don't drop your leading goalscorer to the bench for any league game, especially when maximising points in every game is so important. [Post edited 14 Sep 15:54]

I think when your team is behind and rallies, the temptation is to say the opposition were coasting / in second gear and still in control. When you’re teams leading and that happens the tendency is to say you have lost control. Last season you saw it on here a lot that the opposition were in second gear, we need to get used to being the team in second gear, may be? However maximising control is the most comfortable for the fans, if more tiring for the players, but I like control.
