Eliminator Playoffs 13:23 - Sep 11 with 4557 views | slmrstid | Anyone for more Americanisation of the sport...? https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6618936/2025/09/11/championship-promotion-playo Here's a novel idea, perhaps all 24 teams in the league could play each other in a set of 46 play-off matches, with the teams being awarded points for how they get on in these play-off matches, then at the end of the season the team with the most play-off points get promoted? All the excitement of the play-offs, for nine months of the year!

Eliminator Playoffs on 10:19 - Sep 12 by daveB | whichever way you do it there can be unfairness, i think it's really kept the EFL leagues alive and interesting I'm not sure extending it is needed but it would give more teams an opportunity and it gives the league more big games they can sell tv rights for which is what they are doing it for |

Eliminator Playoffs on 10:33 - Sep 12 by BrianMcCarthy | Last year The Marxist Hunters finished eighth on 66 points, 24 points behind third. Entertaining or not, that team does not deserve to be contesting promotion. |
Works the other way too sometimes though, 3 teams fighting for the title then a massive gap to 4th. I don't love it, they have it over here for the NFL and I feel like it makes a mockery (and sometimes the team that gets a "bye" is well out of game shape by the time they play) but I absolutely wouldn't just have top 3, that just means the last 7-8 games of the season are a complete non event for half the league. As it is at the moment it feels like with maybe 2 or 3 exceptions everyone is still playing for something with 4 games to go, even if it's a long shot.

The best thing about it IMO as a part-time supporter of the not so mighty Borehamwood is they’re one-legged ties at the home ground of the team finishing higher including the final at that level which is a real advantage / ‘reward’ for finishing higher so the teams that do scrap in have to win away three times, as Maidstone very nearly did with the quarters and semis a few days apart so a further advantage for the team not having to contest the quarter-final. I do like the format but at our level the final would be at Wembley (as with the National Leafue) which negates some of that ‘reward’ and I doubt they’d have such a short turnaround between games.
Eliminator Playoffs on 17:23 - Sep 13 with 789 views | ManinBlack | The problem with this is the gulf between the Premiership and our league. If by some fluke a side that finishes 8th does win the play offs they will be annihilated the following season. Look how badly Sheffield Utd and Southampton did and they were around the automatic promotion places when they went up.
