Atmosphere 15:11 - Sep 14 with 6912 viewssaint_04

Hate to say it, thought the atmosphere was dreadful for a derby game.

Doesn’t help the away fans are seated next to fans sat on their hands.

Also doesn’t help the dreadful football especially in the first half. Can someone explain how lumping a ball to one of the smallest players on the pitch makes any sense to anybody?

The atmosphere was great where I was in the Northam. One of the bonuses of standing in there is that you can hardly hear the away fans now during the game. Mind you, as we wandered back into town afterwards we could hear them all celebrating their heroic nil-nil draw like they'd won the Champions League. Still, I guess after all the years of being so far behind us they deserved their big day out.

Nick sums it up best in his match report:

"Southampton supporters were magnificent, drowning out the away support and keeping going throughout the game, it was just a shame that we didn't score if we had you would have heard the roar 18 miles away."

It was the worst skate away end i think i've ever seen, so many replica shirts and very few lads, also the collective age looked about 13.

Almost no needle from them and they seemed properly meek and wilted really quickly. Also what they did sing was pretty much the league two song book.

Though the bit of the chapel next to them was decent, not exactly loads of songs but did it''s job and was a good mixture of older and younger lads.

I'm not normally a fan of them but thought the Beattie flag was actually pretty decent, but for the most part you simply don't hear the northam from the other end of the ground so there's nothing for the away fans to bounce off and i assume the same the otherway round

It was my first time in the Chapel (block 20) and thought the singing wasn’t great but wasn’t bad either. I think it could develop into the old Itchen North. I’m going to go there for the Swansea match which is next one I’m over from Jersey for.

Just an observation really, you can see the Northam clapping but you literally can't hear them from the other side of the ground, other than OWTS, and that's because more than just the Northam join in.

Fair play for the slowest OWTS ever, it was pretty specialist.

Was the standard one in the Milton in the 80s and used a fair bit in the Itchen North when it was good.

If you get a few joining in it can sound incredible but most don't actually know it so speed it up too quickly

My way of looking at that little block of the chapel is it's not our job to sing loads of songs at a million miles an hour, that's the northam, it's to provide more old school vocal backing and give a bit back to the away fans.

Genuinely really enjoy it there personally, and given the disaster of the Northam Wall last season it's great to actually be enjoying going again, i just hope the club don't decide to get heavy handed and let it develop into it's own thing, because it's good for the ground to have an option for those that don't like the noddy banter & million miles an hour rubbish in the Northam

Never heard it like that: must be honest I did question WTF was going on. Difficult to hear over my left shoulder sometimes if the away fans are decent (Wrexham), but when we start to get lower number away ends, it should be even better.

Good to hear ‘we had joy we had fun’, ‘my old man,’ ‘having a party’ and the Mason Mount / Guy Whittingham one…

Not bad, but improvement needed.

Yeah those were all us, as was "we're going to chase them through goldsmith avenue, and then we're taking fratton" to the tune of electric avenue.

Hopefully that chapel block will develop like the Itchen North did when it was good and we'll have a few more unique songs that aren't ripped off other clubs. It's always easier to do that with smaller numbers and generally older heads

This.

I can only assume they have a ticket system where the regular away ticket holders get priority like us.

I thought Bournemouth were better 😂

Although Bournemouth did spank us .....

I’ve had season tkts in all four stands since the ground opened.

From the Northam you can’t hear the away fans in Kingsland corner

From the chapel you can’t hear the Northam

From Itchen north you can make out little bits of away fans in corner but they certainly don’t sound loud. From Itchen North the Northam sounds louder than it’s ever been since the ground opened

From Kingsland corner you couldn’t hear Itchen north at its peak

CONCLUSION:

The acoustics in the stadium are Shyte

I've been to a number of stadiums around the world, and what I've noticed is that the ones that are steep-sided have the best atmospheres. Everton have taken this into account with the design of their new stadium; we didn't. The sides at St Mary's slope at a gentle angle and a lot of the noise drifts out rather than inwards. Adding a second tier would certainly help.

At La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, the stadium considered to have the best atmosphere in the world, the sides are so steep that when you lean forward, you feel that you are going to tumble down onto the pitch, but it is a real cauldron of noise.

Old stadiums are generally better for making noise, as modern buildings use sound absorbimg wall panels to prevent noise pollution in the local area.

Stadiums that have the home side winning normally have a good atmosphere.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

The fans are desperate for a win .
Look at how our late winner against Wrexham was celebrated, the whole place was rocking.
That first half was so bad against Pompey it drained the atmosphere ,it was that shocking.

Exactly.
The atmosphere goes hand in hand with events on the pitch.
Abject displays and loss after loss after loss takes it toll.

It’s not fun anymore.

Sunday was not the game for it - but you still have to suffer us singing the Woolston Ferry (all five verses), our version of (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, various Saints/JFK chants and our Wagnerian style four part harmony ditty covering the club's history

The 12pm kick off is sh!t. They got the Pompey lot in early, so there was nobody on the streets to "welcome" them. Nobody in the pubs, many were closed and not many had time to drink before the game. The West Brom game was so hyped as many fans had been drinking all afternoon. The bubble is totally understandable, but at least allow "some" interaction, and a have a 3pm.kick.off.
