Atmosphere 15:11 - Sep 14 with 7112 viewssaint_04

Hate to say it, thought the atmosphere was dreadful for a derby game.

Doesn’t help the away fans are seated next to fans sat on their hands.

Also doesn’t help the dreadful football especially in the first half. Can someone explain how lumping a ball to one of the smallest players on the pitch makes any sense to anybody?

Had we scored, we would have seen St Mary's errupt. But as the game went on, with no shots or chances, it became clear we weren't going to win. It was very loud at times, but it wasn't on par with the West Brom game. Maybe what was happening on the pitch had something to do with it.

Awful atmosphere, which I wager was made worse by sticking the away fans in that corner. Couldn't hear the northam 'wall' at all. I liked the Beattie flag, but that was as good as it got.
Placid.

Thought it was flat at times. Same can be said of the skates. Was expecting more from them tbh. That said early kick off Sunday morning. Sterile from start so fed into the ground unfortunately. Saints were shite but early days with still.

Same - they were no louder or anything than any other sold out away support. Same crap lack of variety of songs as us. No bite, nothing.

For a 12 O' clock kick-off and a very mediocre goalless draw, which offered little to get excited about, the home atmosphere was good. The noise never really let up. The Northam kept singing and the singing often spread round the stadium. I was there, not far from the away fans, and watched the game again tonight, which confirmed my view that Pompey's away support wasn't as good as Wrexham's, apart from the final few minutes when they were celebrating getting a draw. Let's face it, our team's performance was poor, but I don't think you can criticise our fans. There were probably fewer than 5 quiet minutes in the whole game. My first derby games were in the 60s and I've seen far worse atmospheres for derby games at Fratton Park in that time.

I think the Pompey manager was very clever. Pre game the atmosphere was great but they deliberately set up to slow down and kill the game from the off. Every throw in, goal kick etc they took forever, and it worked. We were not able to use our home advantage and the atmosphere that had built pre game to go at them hard for the first 20 minutes

Strachan was a canny manager.

He knew that the way to keep the atmosphere going was a high tempo game with plenty of shots, crosses and tackles.

We had bugger all of that for most of the game.

It was the worst skate away end i think i've ever seen, so many replica shirts and very few lads, also the collective age looked about 13.

Almost no needle from them and they seemed properly meek and wilted really quickly. Also what they did sing was pretty much the league two song book.

Though the bit of the chapel next to them was decent, not exactly loads of songs but did it''s job and was a good mixture of older and younger lads.

I'm not normally a fan of them but thought the Beattie flag was actually pretty decent, but for the most part you simply don't hear the northam from the other end of the ground so there's nothing for the away fans to bounce off and i assume the same the otherway round

A good summary and pretty much how I saw it too except for the bit about the Northam who I thought gave a good account of themselves. Newcastle have the right idea with away fans. Stick them in the worst possible position, where nobody even notices them. The best atmosphere I've seen anywhere is at Boca Juniors stadium in Buenos Aires and they do the same: stick the away fans as far away from the home end as possible high up in an upper tier where they can't be heard. Then the away team feels the entire crowd is against them. It was a bit like that at the FA Cup derby game in 1996. Pompey fans were hidden away in that little section at the end of the East Stand and the Pompey players really felt that everybody was against them.

Just an observation really, you can see the Northam clapping but you literally can't hear them from the other side of the ground, other than OWTS, and that's because more than just the Northam join in.

With success on the pitch that's what happens, the home end leads the singing and it spreads round the stadium. The problem when our home 'end' was in a corner, was that the rest of the stadium and the players hardly noticed it, as the acoustics in the corner are the worst, with the noise being directed inwards not outwards to the rest of the stadium.

Ultimately, you can't escape the fact that the atmosphere is heavily influenced by what happens on the pitch. When a team wins most of its games and trophies as well, it will have a better atmosphere in its stadium than one that loses most of its games and never wins anything.

The best atmosphere at the Dell was in the late 70s after we won the FA Cup, and the team and fans fed off that sucess going into the most successful period in our history.
In complete contrast to that, we are currently experiencing the worst run of results in our history. In fact, we have been so bad that we have been breaking all-time national records for worst ever team performances. To compound that, we now have a team that can't score goals so we don't even have them to cheer. Bearing that in mind, the atmosphere has been pretty good.

I sit in the Itchen North and thought the atmosphere was good before the game and at the start.

It went dead at times as once again there was little cheer on the pitch.

It’s a shame as you just knew that if we had scored it would have been electric.

For a team that reckon they are the best supporters in the land I thought Portsmouth were quiet at times towards the end as they Celebrated their well earned 0-0 win they became loud .

The fans were well up for this game shame the team wasn’t.
All the fans want is cohesion, spirit, effort etc that was sadly lacking in the first half.
Just coming off a terrible season in the premiership and a less than promising start to this one it’s little wonder the fans feel let down.
As for Pompey fans loud at the end, that was only when St.Marys was emptying, to celebrate their draw.

The atmosphere was great where I was in the Northam. One of the bonuses of standing in there is that you can hardly hear the away fans now during the game. Mind you, as we wandered back into town afterwards we could hear them all celebrating their heroic nil-nil draw like they'd won the Champions League. Still, I guess after all the years of being so far behind us they deserved their big day out.
