Junior Dale in the 1980s 09:27 - Sep 15 with 2675 viewsmodelboydave

Morning everyone.

Many of you will know that I am writing a fortnightly column in TVOS this year. I want to write an article on Junior Dale in the 1980s and early 90s. I have a few memories myself and a few stories I can write about. However, I am keen to hear any other memories that people have that I can include in the article.

Thanks – Dave

I seem to remember an away trip to Rotherham and taking part in a penalty shoot out on the pitch. Kel might have more memories but I am not sure he posts on here anymore.

In the 80s when it was first launched, meetings would take place in the old social club. They’d usually consist of quizzes or just sitting about while Maureen Peacock and Keith Hicks would be taking names for away trips. We went on a minibus to places like Halifax, Stockport, Tranmere and the infamous 1-0 nine men game at Burnley when we were sat amongst home fans in the Cricket Field Stand.

Most of us would go to the soccer schools Keith Hicks would run during the holidays, playing in 5 a side tournaments. There would also be the annual penalty competition where the final would take place at half time during the final game of the season. Dave Redfern was in net one year, and 12 months later the Dale and Peterborough players were stood waiting for us to finish a marathon shootout.

Great days.

Always remember sitting in the little bar watching 'Saint and Greavsie' and getting let into the ground for free at about 1.30pm, the odd occasion a player would come and do a bit of a Q&A with us. I remember my first away game was a Junior Dale mini bus trip to Bolton and we ended up sat with the Bolton fans behind the net opposite the end where the supermarket was.

Happy days.

Great fun doing activities at the club before Saturday home games. My claim to fame was winning the Junior Dale penalty competition infront of the Sandy Lane - scored all my penalties and the crowd singing 'sign him up' 😆
I've got a black and white photo with me getting my trophy presented off Jason Smart infront of the dugouts and the old main stand.
