Ah the joys of getting older...

Saturday morning woke up and stretched in bed - something in my back went twang!

Very very slowly improving. I'm not totally incapacitated, can walk, drive etc. Just can't stand up straight. Popping ibuprofen like a good 'un.

Any hints or tips to help alleviate it? Ta.

I’ve had the lot and I’ve got a drawer in my kitchen that wouldn’t look out of place from a scene in The Wire.

On the meds front I always say this one thing to people - if you get prescribed Diclothiniac for anything then question it, question it again and then in your last question ask for a PPI alongside it. It’s an evil bastard thing and nearly killed me years ago with internal bleeding being a very, very common side effect.

Tramadol used sparingly is a great drug.
Can have a nice trippy effect but what screws me up is it actually gives me insomnia and restricts me from trap one for a few days. I only ever take it if things are really, really bad. My dog swears by it and sorts him out as well (real reason why I have a months worth in the drawer!!!).

If you can avoid morphine patches, NSAIDs, Tramadol and all the rest of the opioid family then please do. Motion really is lotion and keeping the mind occupied can deflect that constant nerve pain if you have it.
When it’s really bad though I get people will do and take absolutely anything. It really can be indescribable and I fully understand people who go to extreme lengths…… I mean operations in this area aren’t exactly an everyday quick decision!!!

Best of luck

Whoever's was the Paramol recommendation - they've been pretty good, not had a need to resort to anything stronger! (bottle of Glenlivet has been tempting)

Anyway I'm still relatively mobile, very slowly improving. Will see how we go with the osteo on Monday.

(although to add to general physical irritations, I just started with Invisalign yesterday...)

Looks like I chose the wrong week to give up sniffing glue, etc.

Find a mobility / movement coach mate, it’s what I do for a living. Pity I’m not based in London anymore! Initially find an osteopath or a myotherapist. Chiro’s I’d steer clear of, then like I said invest in a movement coach.

My clients range from their 40’s to their 70’s and I use mobility training to enhance their lifestyle. Animal Flow, Stick Mobility and Kinstretch are the modalities I use, worth a search in your local area to see if anyone practices the above mentioned.

Tramadol didn't agree with me at all. Constantly nauseous, and caused me to have an incident in the toilet that I really couldn't mention on here in case anyone's eating.

Diazepan on the other hand were bloody brilliant. No wonder so many housewives got addicted to them in the 70's and 80's

Diazepam are indeed bloody good but docs are loathe to prescribe. My doc won't even give me Tramadol and apparently osteopathy not available on NHS.
I had to twist his arm just to get the slightly stronger cocodamol.
And yet if you're a younger bloke too anxious to look for a job, you get the lot.
Ps…not being a generationalist but docs seem to think if you're getting old you just have to put up with it.
The days of being given diazepam willy nilly have gone and been.

Can I just repeat a word of caution above.

Before you start practicing on your own or accompanying a video or app, take lessons. This is especially important for people like the Chef starting out with back issues.

A properly trained yogi (and not all are because by the way bbecause of dodgy accreditation) can ensure your doing it right. Many people start, get things wrong and cause and/or exacerbate problems. There's also a second reason, you might be doing a pose correctly, until the yogi moves you a fraction, and suddenly the benefits seem to increase and flow instantly.

Same goes for pilates.

That’s a fair point, but this particular video is very gentle, mostly breathing and light stretching. I should have added - this isn’t one to fix your back, try it once your back is feeling better. It will really help to stretch your lower back.

Gilbert & Sullivan saw this coming way back in Victorian times hence the opera The Pilates Of Penzance.

Ha ha ha! Fair enough, ‘things that I practice to help people?’ My point being is that osteo’s myo’s and anti inflams/ painkillers are short term solutions. A regular visit to someone who specialises in movement is the way forward.
