After last week’s horror show the U’s are back on home territory for a difficult encounter against the Gas.
Everything last week was set up nicely for a U’s win. Accrington bottom of the league and inconsistent results. The U’s getting back to a settled team despite numerous injuries as identified by RS in an earlier post.
The facilities in the 1958 lounge were superb. We sat with three local supporters who made us very welcome. Indeed, everyone welcomed us from the car park attendant to the MC and the Club Chairman.
As it was a lunchtime kick off, we had a pre match bacon sandwich and drink before taking our seats in the main stand.
Strangely the U’s faithful 202 including the three of us were quiet from before kick off I had predicted a healthy 3-0 U’s win, and we got off to the worse possible start. Outplayed, outmuscled and out fought throughout the entire first half we could have been 3-0 down before Lisbie missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise on half time.
I have never known such a poor half of football with the U’s second best in every department.
The second half saw a slight improvement but in fairness it couldn’t have been any worse. The end of the game was greeted with silence from the faithful perhaps failing to fully comprehend just what a poor game they had witnessed.
We returned to the 1958 lounge, and I learned that my crowd attendance estimate was only two out. I won a Bottle of 18-year-old Irish whiskey, and we then settled down to a two-course lunch of braised beef with mash and vegetables followed by a selection of three desserts. The food was superb and the people friendly. We enjoyed a leisurely drink with our lunch before heading home. I was obviously disappointed with the scoreline, but the rest of the day was memorable despite the 90 minutes of abject misery.
Today Darrell Clarke is in town with the Gas, and it will be a difficult match. Time to roll up the sleeves and get back to some form after the disappointing results we have experienced recently.
Will Matt Macey be fit, otherwise I reckon I have the starting XI.
Smith
KVY Tucker Araujo Powell
Bishop Payne Read
Gordon Lisbie Tovide
Subs Chamberlain Gape Williams MBick Hunt Baldwin Anderson
Weather will be 22 degrees Celsius and sunny intervals.
I reckon a narrow 1-0 home victory with Lisbie on the scoresheet.
Enjoy the game.

The footballing Gods taking the piss out of us yet again. We can do everything but score the winner and of course Lyle Taylor slots one in for the Clarets (pen).

Well we wanted a reaction after Accrington, and at least we got one, even if we couldn't get the win we deserved. Should have been ahead in the first half, not behind, but a lovely move starting from Araujo for the equaliser. The Gas definitely improved second half, but we still should have won it. People might be hard on Lisbie for poor finishing and decision making, but I hope not. He's definitely got talent, his pace terrifies defenders, and at least he's getting in those spaces to create those opportunities. It'll come for him if he keeps doing that. Still frustrating though, we should have beaten a team who I think will be in the promotion mix at the end of the season.
After equalising should have seen the game home . In fact game should have been over before they took the lead. Wondered why the subs did not come on at the hour mark. Not winning enough aerial ball in our own back four, but undone by cute small ball which we failed to shepard away . A improvement but need to build on it.
If I am honest, it always worries me when my team plays well and doesn’t win. In successful teams, it is a given that when you play well you will win. Everyone knows that it’s not possible to play well every week at these levels. The successful teams win when they play well, find a way to accumulate points when they are mediocre and refuse to lose when they play badly.
DC in today's programme. Must be a very worried man tonight...

You say he got a reaction? Another game where we fail to win at home? Hilarious
My point being you quoted DC’s words from the programme, what else should he have said? We didn’t win, nobody can deny that, but do you disagree that we played well and deserved to win? Nothing hilarious about it, unless you watched a game I didn’t?
My first live Saturday game of the season and I saw lots of positives.
I thought we missed Edwards. Lisbie is talented, but currently is a weak finisher. Dropping Tovide for MBick was both inspired and justified. MBick can retain a ball without falling over and feinting injury.
We deserved more than a single point, but Rovers goal was slick and On-side despite the crowds protestations. Lisbie has three chances to deliver a win and didn’t. That’s football.

We've missed Edwards pretty much all season. He's barely showed up so far. Shadow of the player he was last season.
