I’m as USA USA USA as they come, but something about the Ryder Cup has grown to make me uneasy.
Golf seems to be losing the unique atmosphere that was always unlike any other sport. It’s not the type of thing that I’d even <i>want</i> to see in any other sport, but it was something cool and different and only tennis ever had even a hint of it.
Ryder Cup turns golf into an ugly football or American College Football rivalry game, with no away fans.
And unfortunately the passion for it then bleeds over when Europeans come to the Masters and US Open. Maybe I’m being a wuss, but I had to rant a little about something right now.
As I type this, the crowd acts like a bunch of douchepumps to Rory. [Post edited 27 Sep 15:51]

If Hovland can't play the envelope rule will come into play.
What is the envelope rule?
When the two captains submit their singles line-up for Sunday, they also provide a sealed envelope containing the name of one player.
The player named in the envelope would sit out the singles if an opponent had to withdraw through illness or injury more than 30 minutes before the start of the first singles match.
The two players would be regarded as a pair so each side would take half a point.
If a player withdraws less than 30 minutes before the first singles match starts, their match is forfeited.
As soon as a team captain is made aware of possible illness or injury to one of his players, they must immediately inform the opposing captain and chief referee.
The names in the envelopes are only revealed if they are used.
An additional envelope was used at the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straights in case a player had to pull out after testing positive for Covid-19.
Europe need just 2½ points from the 12 singles matches to retain the Ryder Cup. If Hovland withdraws from his match then they would need only two points from the remaining 11.
How would the rule work in practice?
If Hovland is withdrawn, what happens next depends on whose name is in the envelope.
And whoever is named would then miss out on a singles match.
Hovland is the last match so if his scheduled opponent English is in the envelope it would be simple and the match would go down as a tie.
