Still thinks he's right about his Oxford team selection and rejects all objections.

Poll: What do you expect from the Charlton game?

The more I see of him the more I respect him. Seems pretty sincere and thoughtful and as open as someone in his position can be.
I'd have rather he started with a stronger team, but he justified his selection, fair enough, I get it. I suspect he might tweak it when next faced with the same situation. Trouble is, in our wider UK blame culture if you fess up to every 'minor misjudgement' people very quickly make out you don't what you're doing.
On balance, 8 games, 12 points, unbeaten in 5 and a team that generally looked in control last night. The guy is doing good!

I'm not convinced by this, players can't play 3 games a week attitude. The more you tell them that, the more they will believe it. The old saying is don't change a winning team, unless forced to. He made 5 changes last night, would he have done that if we were playing Middlesbrough ?
That shows a lack of respect to Oxford.

and yet every season when we have these 3 games week the team tned to lose the 3rd game so he went a different way last night and wasn't miles away from working. That team he picked should have been good enough to play better than they did

I get the sentiment - pick your best team to win the game in front of you. But if we’d played another game with the same starting 11 as previous 4 games and Saito pulls his hammy are you genuinely telling me you’re not sat here lambasting the manager?

The championship is a slog and the reason teams like Burnley / Leeds can get 100 points is that they have 25 genuine first team players at a good level who can come in without any drop in quality. We do not have that good a squad, and when we rotate its in hope of no drop in quality not expectation.

I think he’s right to rotate. The alternative is the Steve McClaren crash of 2019, flogging 13 players until they drop. The fact the players being rotated in played poorly isn’t on the manager, the tactics/gameplan is but having a go at him for just rotating is off the mark imo.

Let's get this straight - you think if our manager plays our best players, and one of them gets injured, fans are going to be up in arms and demanding rotation at all costs? Get real! Why play anyone at all with that logic? You also comically undo yourself with your own argument - you're all for rotation, while stating we don't have a good enough squad to rotate. Hilarious!

It may be that he showed a negative mindset by chosing two def. midfielders from the off, but Oxford beat Bristol City a few weeks ago and you`ll never know what to expect from a Rowett led team.

Any player can get injured at any time, whether they play once a week or three times a week.
Also, before last night they had only played 7 games this season, so how tired can they be ?
Surely they are still getting up to match fitness.

JS thinks he was right with his team selection......I do not.

He left out Saiko, Burrell & Madsen to give them a rest (???) - why did he bring them on 60 minutes or so then? To win the game I presume, so why not start them and try and win the game in the first half?? and then make changes in the second half for a rest if that is the Club policy. They cant be knackered yet, surely, the season is only 2 months old!!!

I believe the changes were a serious reason why we played so poorly last night.

Just get your best team out and win matches......

One of the points that’s been missed is something we talked about a few weeks back… Cifuentes had 2 years with this team and league, he’ll have known a lot more about what works and doesn’t work at the end than he did at the start. That knowledge left with him, we start afresh with Stephan so there will be things like Hayden and Field together which we know from experience is going to be poor but he has to find out himself. If he repeats the mistakes of last night over and over, then you’ve got a problem. So far he’s seemed quite pragmatic, proactive and quick to learn to me.

Agree but he did say he’d watched every single match from last season before pre season got under way (probably while he was waiting in the wings) so you’d like to think he wasn’t starting completely blind. The focus of his coaching right from the off was being more progressive more quickly which he’d surely have seen was a big issue for us for most of last season. Which makes the pairing of Field and Hayden last night all the stranger.

Maybe that belongs on the thread about how much you learn about games watching them on streams rather than being there

I hope you are right on this.
Last nights pairing of Field and Hayden was so negative, there is no creativity in either of them. While the recruitment this season was good, they didn't address the lack of creativity in the midfield area, either at No. 6 or No. 8. Madsen is coming on, but I'm not convinced with him as yet.

I’m fairly sure he’s probably tried it in training a few times and not just watched the tapes…and if he hasn’t, he should have done.

He got the (wine) pairings wrong last night, rather than the entire menu. He’ll work it out but it’ll cost us a few points whilst he experiments.

Smellier, innit.

He's a pro coach working with these players day in, day out, and he has his staff to provide further input on top. He's also been with us 3 months. If he didn't foresee the effect on the team of all those changes, that's worrying in my book.

I hope the hypothesis that he's a quick learner is right. The evidence post-Coventry feels broadly positive, but I'd have felt a lot better if he'd acknowledged some of the decent critical questioning from the floor at the WLS debrief. As it was, he came over to me as dismissive.

Evidently, Stephan shouldn't have bothered watching any of those games, as the received wisdom from the amateurs here is that you learn a big fat zero from them. Perhaps one of the committee could send him a memo?

And that makes it all the more frustrating as most can see what the problems are. It was all to reminiscent of last season.

I suppose they had to make the choice of where to spend the money, and we desperately needed strikers, but still annoying.

What was interesting and again, perhaps hasn't been noted is the players brought in last night were all significantly older than those rested. The pace, power, and energy was markedly lower.
