Have Saints lost their'Devil May Care'attitude ? 20:46 - Oct 11 with 1427 views | grumpy | When Saints played at the Dell we had this, particularly under Lawrie. Under Lawrie we bought experienced players who were heading towards the end of their career and brought our best youth players through to play alongside them. Who could forget the Shearer,Wallace's,Moran etc. Now we play with too much caution, pass it sideways and backwards, play out from the back so we don't lose the ball, the joke of that is that's exactly what we do. Why don't we play our young players more. We are so afraid of losing that's exactly what we do.
Have Saints lost their'Devil May Care'attitude ? on 21:14 - Oct 11 with 1363 views | Southamptonfan | It's an utter mess all round. You're right, we have lost that brave, go for it attitude. It just looks like the players can't be arsed at times and yes, are scared to lose. Perhaps there is a lot of pressure, a toxic pressure, toxic environment within the club yes, which makes everyone on edge. But what can you do? Ofcourse there are expectations. It seems strange to me that players that are useless here, under various managers, often are brilliant at other clubs. There must be something wrong at the club. The environment just isn't right and hasn't been since Sport Republic arrived. I sense frustrations throughout the club, in the players such as the lack of a striker (again!!) and the continuous mistakes from above. As for young players, Robertson is loved by the fans. I've not heard a bad word against him. I like him, he was brilliant at Ipswich. So what do they do, they drop him and play our other young player, who is absolutely useless. And the reason is all about money. They spent 7 million on Downs, so they are desperate to scramble that money back. That's all it is. There will be pressure on the manager to recoup that money and therefore play him. This then causes disharmony in the squad when players are picked purely for this reason, rather than form. Robertson hasn't cost us anything. This is how Sport Republic run the club. They make decisions based on what they will think will make money. So basically the problem is the owners. I am certain of it. [Post edited 11 Oct 21:19]

He brought not only experienced players, but players who he could trust as well as revitalise their careers with his man management. The likes of Rodrigues and possibly Bally thought their careers were on the wain.

He wasn't a yes man. Sport Republic love appointing young, inexperienced, naive managers for a reason.

Yep, and as I posted earlier Dom Ballard scored a hat trick for Orient this afternoon.

I think the issue is that Sport Republic only see young players as commodities and they like a quick turnover so they're sold to the first bidder. It means we see very little of skilful players, like Dibling, Robinson, Amo-Ameyaw and Ballard before they're sold. Meanwhile, our first team squad is filled with average journeymen, who are not going to play exciting football. More recently than the McMenemy era, we had the exciting Pochettino and Koeman teams of 2014-16. Remember this end to that era, before Mané, Wanyama, Pellè and Ramirez were sold in the summer of 2016? 23 April 2016 Aston Villa 2–4 Southampton 1 May 2016 Southampton 4–2 Manchester City 8 May 2016 Tottenham Hotspur 1–2 Southampton 15 May 2016 Southampton 4–1 Crystal Palace That's more wins in 3 weeks than we had in the whole of last season. No wonder I never wanted that season to end. [Post edited 12 Oct 12:43]

Have Saints lost their'Devil May Care'attitude ? on 15:09 - Oct 12 with 959 views | DorsetIan | We’ve been in slow and steady decline since Gao took over. The recruitment and appointment of managers has been appalling. Will Still hasn’t demonstrated very much so far, so it looks like the job of taking us from a mid-table PL to mid-table Championship side is pretty much complete.

Have Saints lost their'Devil May Care'attitude ? on 10:50 - Oct 13 with 703 views | templarinexile | The " devil may care" spirit is sadly lacking from most professional football these days, largely replaced by hopeless attempts at "possession football" as in the style of Barca and Man city at their heyday It just happens that Saints are amongst the very best/worst proponents of boring, risk free and incompetent teams. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Have Saints lost their'Devil May Care'attitude ? on 10:00 - Oct 14 with 544 views | SaintNick | Lawrie McMenemy has not been manager for 40 years, to put that in perspective, when he left the same time scale being applied we would not have been able to moan as Football had not restarted after WW2. The way football has changed not just in 40 years, but in the last dozen years is immense, indeed in the last decade it has changed more than any other period. Dirk says that we groom players to sell them, if that was the case why did we offer Dibling a new deal which he refused to sign over a period of time, he went because he wanted Premier League football and £100k a week or so, nothing else. Dom Ballard is held up as some sort of talisman, good to see him get a hat trick, that makes 6 goals this season, that means he has now doubled his career total league goals over the previous 47 games, perhaps we could have kept him, but he is no better than what we have, if he had played he would have failed as Damion Downs has done, a youngster with no one creating chances for him. I wish him all the best. I am not sticking up for Sports Republic here, just pointing out reality, football has changed, you can't hold on to players these days, 10 years ago no one would have paid £40 million for Tyler Dibling until he had played more games and proved himself, now its a drop in the ocean for some clubs. Some moan that since Koeman we have had no decent managers, I would disagree, Claude Puel had somewhere between the 6th-8th best season in our entire history in terms of League position & reaching a major cup final, he lost his two central defenders in Fonte to sulking & Van Dijk to injury & had to adjust his playing style to suit and was accused of failing to entertain. People forget an early game where we slaughtered West Ham 3-0 in their new stadium, the 2-1 win at home to Inter Milan, the 3-0 win over Leicester when Van Dijk got injured, a 4-0 win at Sunderland, 4-3 at Watford. Ralph Hasenhuttl entertained yet he two was slagged off as he struggled to create a team that stayed in mid table with absolutely no money allowed out of China. Memories are short, perhaps the greatest day for most Saints fans under 50 who were there was the play off final, despite the tippy tappy football I am no fan of Russell Martin, but he got the job done and at times entertained, 54 goals in 23 home games was beaten by only Ipswich & 33 goals away from home was pretty good 5th best I think, no one mentions those games where we walloped sided Blackburn 4-0, Swansea 5-0, Sheffield Wednesday 4-0, Huddersfield 5-3 & Birmingham 4-3 away, all entertaining games but all that is said about Martin now is Tippy Tappy football. I am not slagging anyone off here for their opinions, just suggesting that recollections may vary at times, our two best days in the last decade were probably Liverpool away in the League cup semi final & play off final at Wembley in 2024, both under perhaps the two most hated managers of the last 25 years, all a bit ironic

Look at the big picture rather than the exceptions that prove the rule. Look at where we were when Koeman left, or even when Puel left, and look at where we are now and, try with a straight face, to argue that things haven't gone seriously wrong under both Gao and Solak.

5th March 2022. Aston Villa 4-0 Southampton. That was the day the rot set in. Our Premier League relegation was a matter of time. Sport Republic buying the club was a glimmer of hope but it continued. Now Southampton FC are a bottom half Championship team. How long do we continue with Will Still if results don’t improve? But Sport Republic replace a sacked manager with someone worse. So what is the point? WE MARCH ON

Same old rinse & repeat. Nothing will change until we get rid of these very poor owners & we are bought by people who know WTF they're doing.

We lost 15 out of 21 at the end of the 2020/21 season, including the 9-0 away at Old Trafford. And there was the other 9-0 the season before that. So the rot was finding its feet before then.

Assuming SR aren't going anywhere soon - despite murmurs of selling us that I've read over the past few months - I can see us turning into the next Stoke... or Blackburn... or Norwich... or Derby. Clubs that used to be pretty decent and were in the PL not so long ago but now just make up the numbers in the Championship.

True but in the months before that Villa game we were doing well. After that we dropped like a stone and just had enough to stay up. The excuses for both 9-0 mailings have been made but seeing those types of results the alarm bells must of been ringing. Losing heavily at Old Trafford has happened to many a side but Leicester winning 9-0 away just shouldn’t happen. And don’t get me started on that Leicester semi final. Atrocious.
