I’ve seen these types of celebrations many times on video and thought they seemed very jolly but it was a different experience on the ground here.For over an hour, 20 big cars, led by a BMW with the numberplate PIRATE, turned the narrow windy streets of a medieval city into a Mario Kart track, trailed by a police motorcycle presumably looking out for accidents. In a ten minute walk from our restaurant to the hotel it passed us three times. The sound of the horns was constant but every time we needed to cross a road, we had to guess carefully if it was getting much closer.
Like everyone here, I’ve learned how to disregard rancid macho dickishness at football but I was taken by surprise to come across it in such an incongruous setting. No doubt every Albanian was thrilled at their victory (most of Europe would be pretty pleased) but I imagine that many of them must cringe to see their country and flag represented in this way.
