He's disappointed in the defending but overall still going in the right direction hopefully. Swansea will come at us and the way we set up that may suit us.

Thought he spoke a lot of sense.
Agree, Stevenage.
I've really liked him from the off. I think he's calm, has dignity, protects his players and was very discreet about whatever was going on in the first few games as regards game models and fitness issues.
I'm not mad about his match tactics, funnily enough, but I like him. I think he's a good manager, and when the boss can manage his players and his bosses there is always reasons for optimism.

I like him and yes, he speaks a lot of sense and is obviously an intelligent manager - But... that loss today was on him IMO. I don't understand why we are not starting with our best 11 - even premier league managers are fielding their players returning from international duty - why are we resting them? Surely it's easier resting them when we are two or three up - millwall were there for the taking, when Burrell, Saito and dembele came on we played with much more intensity and drive.. It's also frustrating that not for the first time this season, an experienced championship manager like Neil outsmarted Stephan - we have a wealth of talent now, they need to be used more effectively.....

I thought today that Julien went with a more taller physical line up to match the height of those Millwall players and try and rough up their back line a bit. It didn't work but I like the fact he gives it a go, big mistake was not changing it up at half time as at 2-0 down, he needed to change the dynamic and intensity up front.

I kind of get your point, but we were at home and should have been set up to play our game, rather than set up to match them. i think the changes made us lose our intensity and at times in the first half we looked like strangers to each other,,,

The key personnel decisions today, imho:
1) No Mbengue to bring the ball out from the back, or offer pace to allow us to defend the ball over the top - not an International Travel issue, may have been a height decision to favour Cook and Morrison.
2) No Saito - probably an International Travel decision, can't see a tactical reason not to start him.
3) No Burrell - probably an International Travel decision, can't see a tactical reason not to start him.
4) Frey over Kolli - could have been a preference for Frey, as it was for the Oxford game, or it could have been an International Travel decision.
I hope we didn't change our team that much just to combat Millwall at our place. I'd hope that we'd have enough faith in what we're doing to lean more heavily towards letting them worry about us.
For that reason, I suspect/speculate/am completely guessing that 1, 2 and 3 were at least partially fitness-related.

Agree with points 1 and 2 - Mbengue gives you pace and is not weak in the tackle would have played him with Morrison. Think he used Frey over Burrell and Kolli because of the physicality of the Millwall defence. The midfield needed strengthening and Field or Hayden should have come on earlier Varane was ineffective and unfortunately so was Vale. He has some thinking to do now we are nearly up to strength over who he wants to play but unlike previous seasons it’s a good one to have.

Re: Mbengue I think we all know his major flaw is indiscipline. I saw a clip somewhere with Stephan saying he speaks to him about it every other day <gallic shrug; rueful smile>.
I can understand playing measured Cook (who's been playing well) against Dark Arts experts, wind up merchants Alex Neil's Millwall. They would have been totally primed to wind him up. Apart from that he'd have been an obvious choice to beat their efficient defence with some pace and power and hoover up their quick breaks.

Good summary of the weighing-scales decision, Nix.
When introduced, Mbengue brought all of the positives you mentioned, but he also brought the indiscipline. That 'stamping' clip does not look good.

I suspect you're right on much of this. During his pre-match interview Stephan mentioned that some players had arrived on Thursday and therefore had 1 day to prepare for Millwall. When I heard this I suspected that these players would drop to the bench and so it proved. Whilst long distance travel is less than ideal, I think Julien needs to trust his best players to deliver regardless. That all being said, it is a 3-game week so perhaps Stephan thought it prudent to save the long distance international travellers for Swansea.
As for playing Frey alongside Kone, I just don't get it. It didn't work against Oxford and didn't work again yesterday. Injuries barring, I hope that's the end of that experiment. Personally I'd like to see Frey as cover for Kone and Kolli as cover for Burrell.

But then, being at home, perhaps the thinking was that the onus was on us to take the game to Millwall, rather than playing a low possession game on the break? we can obviously debate whether trying to match up millwall's defence with Frey and Kone was the right call, and whether he should have revised the plan at HT. But both goals being somewhat freakish I actually wasn't surprised that he didn't change it straight away.
I said similar to a post above to my dad at HT, that it was disappointing to be two down to two bad goals, but that it was also encouraging to see JS trying something different that on another day should have been enough for us to be leading at HT. Not saying we should be using this tactic every week, just that it's good to not be too dependent on one way of playing. As others had said previously, the element of surprise that accompanied switching to a more direct style that worked in our favour against Charlton will have gone now, so mixing it up a bit isn't a bad thing.
Wasn't there a stat last week about QPR having played the lowest number of crosses in the league? We must have gone a good way towards addressing that yesterday, albeit mostly crosses at knee height.
