Long throws in vogue 14:38 - Oct 21 with 677 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | More and more teams using this tactic now, seen a lot of chatter about it. It can definitely be a massive weapon when performed right and it’s just perfectly acceptable in the laws of the game. But what is your opinion of it? For me it doesn’t sit right in a game of football you can gain such an advantage to launch the ball deep into the box from anywhere in the opposition half using your hands. Also with throw ins you can be a lot more accurate and throw it flat and straight. The balls are so light now that pretty much anyone can hit the 6 yard box from 40 yards. Throw ins are close to becoming far more valuable than corners for many teams and I think it’s a shame. Would you like to see a change in the laws so that you can’t throw the ball into the box without it bouncing in order to preserve the “foot” part of football? Call me a purist but I don’t like the fact so many chances are created with the hands.

One thing I’ve seen a couple of times recently that I don’t really like is teams kicking off and pumping it out for a throw in the far corner, to try to gain position to press opponents high up the pitch.

We haven't used them for how long? bit of a shock to the system and quick throw ins into positions the opposition defence haven't covered yet, we have seen glimpses under Sheehan but do seen as if we have reverted to slow backward possession without any thought of putting teams under pressure when we can, as for the purist any players first touch should be to allow the team to put pressure on the opposite, control of the ball, attempts on goal or relieving danger. If goals come from quick throws, long throws, well thought out corners and the ability to cause chaos in opposition ranks, where better to do it in the opposition's half of the field rather than our own. When in possession of the ball we want to see incisive play accurate passing, good movement, at times the game needs the opposition team steam taken out of their attacks by ensuring correct marking but not to the extent where our possession become predictable.

I remember when Rory Delap and Stoke were in their long throw era, teams used to kick the ball out for a corner instead of a throw in, It just goes against the ethos of football for me personally. You want to see chances created with passing, dribbling and crossing. Just having someone launch it in with their hands seems a bit cheap. How long until we have teams playing for throw ins? And don’t get me started on the time it takes for a player to get a towel and dry the ball, that absolutely shouldn’t be allowed.

3 birds really as it means we won’t have to play Josh key in defence any more.

A good rugby tactic or one of Matt Le Tissier’s less commendable gambling moments.

Oh yeah there’s no doubt it’s effective but it does go against the ethos of football, it’s a bit like before the pass back rule where teams could just take the piss playing the ball back to the keeper to pick up and waste time.
