It's unrealistic to think we've one of the 20 biggest fanbases in England given the years we spent at The Dell with only around 12-13k home fans there.

The support we added with SMS is always going to be of the type who will come and go to games depending on how well we are doing.

We never averaged 12-13k (only one season since 1936 have we averaged under 13k), even with a 15k capacity in the 90's, it was pretty much always full.
1960's and 70's most seasons were 20k+, even the 2 seasons in L1 were over 21k.
Chelsea have had under 9k crowds in the PL.

How many clubs would take 55k to a Paintpot final at Wembley? Doubt 20

Indeed, I saw Chelsea v Saints in front of a crowd of around 9,000 in a League game in 1992.

Bunch of gloryhunters; particularly their band of muppets in the Weymouth area.

Leicester have a far better away support then Saints . A lot probably due to the amout of success they’ve had the last few seasons .

We haven’t sold out 3300 at Leicester for a number of seasons . In May and august of last year Saints originally took the full allocation but sent a block back each time . And we still never sold out .

The couple of seasons before we sold out but only just over 1100 the smallest allocation we could take .

From memory, we had about 10,000 S/T holders so with 1500 away fans, only about 3500 tickets wer available on a game by game basis.
Was impossible to fit any more than 13500 in The Dell.

Leicester have not got a bigger fan base than soton which was the original statement. They are a similar sized club with an identical ground. Maybe in recent years they’ve taken a few more to Saints than the other way round . I’ve been in packed away stands at Filbert street full of saints fans so not sure what your point is.

I never hear anyone praise their away support . They are a medium sized premier league club as are we . The only difference between the two clubs is they had good owners who spent good money over the years and replaced superstars( yes they had to sell too because they aren’t a big club )with very good replacements resulting in success in winning the premier league and maybe this is what has slightly boosted their numbers .Even due to their recent success I don’t see them expanding their stadium. Considering all the Shyte saints fans have had to put up with over recent years I think our numbers hold up well.

In the 70’s they had a small ground Filbert street like the Dell was to us , now they have a ground like ours . Other fans of other teams praise the fans of Newcastle, Villa, Leeds, West Ham etc you won’t hear them praise the likes of Leicester ffs

Perhaps Leicester haven't got a bigger fan base, but that actually makes it worse that they get better home and away support than us.

In the past at Filbert Street we have taken a few, but back then they used to only give you about 1,500 tickets on the side stand in the final years of Filbert Street.

Their away support isn't particularly loud and boisterous but it does have the numbers, earlier this season they took 3,000 to Anfield on a Friday night, in comparison when we went to Villa on a Friday night we took about 1,500, it's about 10 miles difference in the milage for both trips.

Lets be blunt here, starting in the summer of 2014 we had an annual summer melt down about how the club had little ambition and sold players, but the following 3 years were amongst the best that we had, yet even getting to the League Cup final in 2017 and finishing 8th wasn't good enough for some of our fans.

When you say how much shyte we have had to put up with, in the last 11 years since we returned to the premier League, up to this season we have fought just one relegation battle in 2018, since then mid table and two semi finals thrown in.

Now if you call that shyte then take a look at the history books, the decade from 1976 -1985 aside, this 10 years was better than and more consistent than just about any other 10 year period that you would care to pull out.

Even when we have had a sniff of glory there have been those that thumbed their noses up, not selling 10,000 tickets for a semi final at Wembley was quite frankly an embarrassment, find an excuse for that one.

Yet certain people moaned their way through it, you were not one of them, but you and i both know plenty of people who did.

Newcastle, Villa, Leeds, West Ham have been traditionally a step up from the likes of Saints & Leicester, not quite as big as Liverpool & United etc, but in between the Big six and the rest of us, you could throw Everton in that mix as well.

Living in london i'd say West Ham are comfortably the third highest supported club here, behind spurs and arsenal.

Chelsea really don't feature that much, though they tend to pull more heavily from surrey i think.

If it’s just for the UK then I’d personally have it as…

1. Manchester United
2. Liverpool
3. Arsenal
4. Chelsea
5. Spurs
6. Newcastle
7. Leeds
8. Man City
9. Everton
10. Aston Villa
11. West Ham
12 Sunderland
13. Wolves
14. Leicester
15. Saints
16. Forest
17. Sheffield Wednesday
18. Derby
19. WBA
20. Birmingham
21. Sheffield United
22. Middlesbrough
23. Blackburn
24. Stoke

You mean England rather than the UK (which would include Scotland yeah)

Of course people moaned during the Puel season. We played truly awful football, our points total fell from 63 to 46 points and we won less games at home that season than Hull did and they were relegated.

Tell me how many teams have won trophies when getting less points than their rivals ?

Back in the early 1980's Liverpool where perhaps one of the most boring teams to watch, but they were still the best supported other than Manchester United who were themselves playing awful football in the main.

Arsenal were another point, 1-0 to the Arsenal was their chant, boring boring Arsenal was their oppositions chant, still one of the best supported teams.

So your point is ?

To be blunt, I'm not sure what you point is.

What's trophies got to do with it? The club is getting near 150 years old and only in one of those seasons have we won a major trophy so we always assume we are never going to win anything.

Yes, Puel's football was boring and I don't really have an issue with boring football if we win. I'd rather us win 1-0 in an awful game than draw 3-3 in a great one.

The main issue fans had with Puel is, not only was the football awful, but we also won less home games that season than a relegated team. You can't expect s/t holders to be happy when they get so little in return for their money.

It was no surprise he was sacked.

My point is that for a side of Saints stature you can't have it both ways at least not for long, you can't take on teams too often with free flowing football, you have to compromise and keep things solid at the back.

Puel did have some good wins, but truth was when he lost both Dijk & Fonte in January of that season, he had to protect his back four and go defensive.

Its a question of 8th or 15th with flair, Saints fans want their cake and eat it

I am sure that most Saints fans would take Claude Puel's season of 8th and a League Cup final than this season. ironically enough Newcastle seem ready to replicate Saints season, they two arent the most exciting side to watch and struggle to score goals, indeed leicester have score 1 more goal than Newcastle, they have just let in 27 more

I don't think Saints fans are particularly demanding for entertaining football, we would just like to see some wins.

If you like statistics then it's a good one that, of all the 92 league clubs, Southampton have won the fewest league games over the past 5 seasons. No wonder crowds are dwindling.

You can keep saying Puel did well as he finished 8th but this was with 46 points, the lowest total in PL history for 8th. (down from us getting 63 points the previous season).

It's all well and good playing dull football if we are winning but as I said, we won less home games that season than Hull who went down so not much return for the fan's s/t money and no surprise he was sacked.

Not an excuse but Leicester are pretty much bang in the middle of England, no away game is more than 3 hours away(180 miles), and probably have to travel about half the distance we do over the course of a season.
All Pl clubs get max 3000 tickets, the only ones we don't generally take full amount are Newcastle/Everton/ManCity or if the T/O don't fancy risking it, so the away support holds up well really considering some of the dross served up.
Leicester only brought about 1000 down here in 2021, not that great really.

As for not selling 10,000 tickets for the semi-final at Wembley, I'll have a go at finding an excuse.

Many S/T holders don't bother with cup games (like home Cup ties)
Tickets weren't cheap.
T/office wouldn't sell any extra tickets to S/t holders/members for friends and family who wanted to buy. (why?)
Tickets never went to a General sale.
Many thought our poor side would get beat easy by Chelsea, and were right.

Man City couldn't shift 10000 for last years semi v Liverpool, what's their excuse?, bigger club than us aren't they?

I take note of all excuses and i can agree with the distance thing, over the course of a season Leicester will do less mileage

With regard to the 10,000 unsold tickets everything is just excuses,

We took 45,000 to Wembley for Johnstones Paint trophy final, you could get a ticket for the Chelsea semi for £30 so oit much more than the JPT, ticket price wasnt an issue

The real reason was that the fan base thought we were going to get stuffed, a little bit like the recent home game in the Carabao Cup against Man City and that low turnout.

Man City have been to countless Wembley finals & semi's in the past 10 years, they have got used to it, they have probably been to more Wembley semi's & Finals in the past two years than we have been to in our history.

The Chelsea semi was embarrassing and there's simply no excuse for having so many unsold tickets for it. No matter how crap you are on the field and no matter what turmoil your club is in off of it, it's still a semi-final ffs. It only reaffirms just how many casual/can't be arsed/only go when we're winning fans we actually have. If you can't be bothered to go to an FA Cup semi final at Wembley, then it's probably time to jack it in.

Think it's got even worse over the last few seasons, the lack of interest in domestic cup competitions , especially from S/T holders.
Look at the Grimsby game, we had 12000 home fans for a FA Cup game to get to the quarters, embarrassing, but then we put out a load of reserve dross who couldn't take care of a rubbish 4th div side, again embarrassing, so the s/t holders will say that they were justified, they probably were.

The City game, once again most thought we'd get tonked so didn't show, i l went mor in hope than expectation, believing in miracles and glad l did, one of the best performances in years. l'd take relegation and a FA/League cup win every day of the week, they can't take your name off a trophy, 3 teams always get promoted every year.

Id say we took more like 55000 to the JP Final, the crowd was 73000, they're weren't 18000 Carlisle present, we asked for more tickets, and got refused.

Nick, you know your football, Man City should have sold 33000 for a FA Cup S/F v Liverpool, the crowd that day was only 300 more than the Paintpot Final, bit small time really. If you offered Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham, Everton 70000 tickets for a Wembley game they'd sell them easy.

The old school City fans were decent, the new breed since the money you hear talking pony on the radio, are embarrassing

It was not just season ticket holders that chose to miss the Grimsby game so did our match by match fans .

I think it’s a combination of being shit and also you probably have to be in your 30’s to rember the FA Cup and what it ment .

Now days the younger fans have been brought up on premier league / champions league is all that matters anything else is 2nd fiddle . Cheap tickets for weakend teams and to that .

I still can’t get over the amount of fans that said they’d rather finish 8 th under pochettino then win the cup when we lost to Sunderland. For me criminal playing a weekend team when the competition was opening up .

There are more and more empty seats at St Mary's and increasing season by season. More and more away fans take their place in the home sections. Fans want to see their team win. That's the same at every club. We don't win very much. There is no chance of anyone winning any of the competitions, other than the top 6. It's become boring. There is nothing to win or achieve. It's such a struggle and not much fun.

Fans in general are also walking away from football. I know one Saint fan, a Saints nut, who just doesn't enjoy it anymore. 12:30 kick off on a Sunday, rarely playing on a Saturday, can't walk around the stadium anymore, treated like you are at school in the stadium, can't buy a ticket on the day anymore, a load of picture taking tourists sat in the row in front, these PL players are mostly selfish, greedy so and so's who don't care about the club or fans, just their next move to earn their millions. I know a few who watch non league instead now - players who do it because they love their football. Proper games. The players, manager and owners chat and mingle with the fans. You can take a bottle of coke in without the lid being taken away. You can have a few beers.

The Dell days felt different. We were underdogs, with players who fought for the shirt. We beat some of the big boys and we all knew what we were. It was more enjoyable somehow. Now it's just impossible to get anywhere.
