True ones please.
Samuel Goldwyn of Metro Goldwyn Mayer films is offically named Samuel Goldfish.
When he emigrated to the US from Poland, his actual name was Schmuel Goldfisz. The immigration officail misheard it as Samuel Goldfish which he remained for some years.
Notta Lotta People Know That.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before (long thread, this!) but the house used for the exterior shot of Harry Palmer’s (Michael Caine) flat in the Ipcress File (the one where his omelette-making technique is enough to seduce Sue Lloyd) is the one on the corner of Stanlake Villas and Stanlake Road, just round the corner from HQ.

The idea of buying a diamond engagement ring for prospective brides is surprisingly recent - from the 1940's - and was the result of a marketing blitz by De Beers, who had a glut of diamonds they needed to get rid of (up to that point diamonds were mostly used for industrial purposes).

And it all really took off when:
"A young copywriter called Frances Gerety scribbled the words 'a diamond is forever' on a scrap of paper next to a picture of a couple on honeymoon late one night in the early 1950s. Little did she know that the line would outlive her. Advertising industry lore suggests that her colleagues were not particularly impressed by the line but presented it to their client [De Beers] anyway as they had nothing better to offer. "

Posthumous execution of Oliver Cromwell
History tells us that Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England during the country’s brief stint as a republic, died of complications due to malaria and kidney stone disease. How then, did his chopped-off head end up in private collections and museums for centuries to come?
Well, after his death, the country decided to ditch the republic and asked Charles II to return to England and restore the Stuart monarchy in 1660. Charles returned, but not without a serious grudge against Cromwell and all those who’d executed his father.
Charles put together a kill list with a series of most wanted names on it. One of which was Cromwell but since he was already dead, the next best thing to enact revenge was to have him exhumed and posthumously executed.
Cromwell’s head was stuck on a spike in Westminster Hall for the next 30 years. It then spent 250-odd years being bought and sold by various collectors until it was finally buried in 1960 at Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge.

After its more famous voyage, the Empire Windrush carried British troops to Korea.

The UN forces in Korea included detachments from Colombia, Ethiopia and…Luxembourg.

Only one British Prisoner of War, a Scottish commando called Andrew Condron, refused to return home after being released at the ceasefire. He moved to China and taught English at the University of Peking for a few years before returning home with his wife and son in 1962. He lived in Hampstead and sold the Encyclopaedia Britannica door-to-door.

Didn't know that, but not surprised upon thinking about it.

For Russia has never really been a maritme nation, seeing as the threat to it have always come across land; they've generally only ever invaded neighbouring countries by land and air themselves, and their only access to deep blue water is via the Baltic or Bosphorus - very vulnerable - or the far north, frozen over for several months of the year.

Worse still, large ships are ever increasingly vulnerable to missile or drone attack, often from hundreds/thousands of miles away - see eg the Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea fleet, which Ukraine sunk easily enough with a couple of neptune anti-ship missiles.

Which is why I fear it was stupid of this country to spend billions building the new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, at least now we no longer have an overseas empire. Then again Generals/Admiral are notorious for planning to fight the last war, not the next one.

P.S. I wouldn't be surprised if Russia simply can't afford to build another carrier, what with the way their economy is being stretched over Ukraine and sanctions etc.

The incredible story of the battle of Tsushima where a blundering Russian Baltic Fleet had to make the 6 month journey from the Baltics to East Asia.

They managed to torpedo their own ships and a British fishing vessel on the way.

Led to the Russian revolution, so you know, silver linings.

Russia does have significant navel history - just not as grand as ours 😉
For example, there were many sea battles during the Crimean war - the Baltic, Azoz, Black/White and even a battle in the North Pacific. One of the principles aims of the conflict was to stop Russia having a warm-water port.

Also, Peter the Great stayed in Deptford during a tour to learn about ship building, there’s even a statue of him by Deptford Creek!

I think Russia’s surface fleet might be a bit old, they do have nuclear subs!

Hopefully there are a few ‘not a lot of people know’ in my reply.

He was tall. 6ft 8”. He’s one of my favourite characters in history. An amazing life. His entourage was called the Jolly Company. Lots of serious drinking. Lots of dwarves. They were more like an 18th century version of Johnny Knoxville’s Jackass. Czar Street in Deptford is named after him as he worked in the shipyards in the area incognito under the name Peter Mikhailov. As much as a 6ft 8 man with a pronounced facial twitch and an entourage of 250 can go incognito. Here’s a tangent. There’s a pub near Czar Street called the Dog & Bell and it’s the only pub I know of in London that serves Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish all on tap.

I was staying at the same hotel, when Terry Venables was manager of Middlesbrough.
I asked him about, when he tried to buy, us.
He said, he had agreed a 20 year lease deal, with Jim Gregory. When it came, to signing the deal, Jim Gregory, changed his mind.
