Cardiff Reflection 17:28 - Apr 5 with 5301 viewsbluenwhite10

A poor game between 2 very poor sides and a nervy game too as it was a game we could not afford to lose. The game had little or no real clear cut chances with the ball spending more time in the air instead of the ground.

In the current situation we find ourselves in we are going to score lots of goals as we have no attacking options which took a further blow with Lloyd going off and in fairness performed quite well.

Field looked rushed back and off the pace.

It might turn out to be a good point as a Cardiff win would have dragged us back into the mix.

As good as Nardi is with shot stopping he struggles badly judging crosses.

Really poor performances from Yang and Anderson .

MOM today Edwards

Seems a waste of time and effort trying to pick the bones out of this game. Sum it up in three words, not good enough, and move on.

Bloody awful but thought Colback and the defence deserve a pat on the back.

I don’t want to hear any criticism of Paal tonight.

Inclined to agree - 'reflection' implies something to bounce light off. It'd be more like an autopsy! We're basically staggering to the finishing line a la Ainsworth with what we have on and off the pitch. The fans deserve endurance medals (and refunds).

Having failed to beat Cardiff, however, we also 'can't afford to lose' against Oxford - and even more so for that very reason! What an ending!

Poll: Playoffs?

Colback MoM for me. Did the basic things well, put a foot in and gave us a calm head in the middle. Edwards and Morrison did ok but they defended so deep second half inviting Cardiff on, and there were some heart-stopping giveaways (from Varane in particular). The players know they are in a relegation battle, they seem to have completely lost their confidence.

I reckon we still need 3 points, one win or 3 bore draws.

One of the worst matches I have ever seen. I get we have injuries but that was pathetic.

Sounds like a hard earned point...which is the only positive I'm taking from today. Glad I didn't have to watch it mind you. Better hope we get a few players back, as this lot won't get anything from Oxford or Swansea. We may still limp over the line again...or not🙄

I thought QPR played reasonably well in the first half and created some promising attacks if not actual clear chances. Cardiff’s half time substitutions brought them back into the game and we then looked nervy and defended too deep. We also have no one who can shoot with any power without having half a dozen touches first. Considering the lack of attacking options available to us, I’m reasonably content with the result. This was more “must not lose” than “must win” and we achieved that modest objective.

The one positive to take away from it is that we can stop with the frankly insane idea that if we had just started Lloyd at Stoke we could’ve got something there.

When you’re having to play 5-5-0 at home to a terrible team like Cardiff what can you really say or expect.

The worst game of football I have had to sit through in 40 years of supporting this club.

No, we shouldn't sigh and move on.

It was fckin disgusting performance and an insult to everyone single one of us who pay to follow this club. Not one single passage of play carved them open, not one moment of quality in 90 plus minutes of football. We have become numb to the shyte that is served up, but fck that, I'm fuming.

A lack of standards and pride run through this club and the players (yet again).

Cardiff Reflection on 18:09 - Apr 5 with 2892 viewsqueensparker

It had nil nil written all over it from early on but I can take some positives from it - we joined the battle and looked as up for it as this limited squad can get (in the first half), Alfie Lloyd proved playing someone with physical presence at centre forward is crucial and even Bennie showed something, Smyth had a great first half, Colback and the defence played well. Paal was excellent, credit where it’s due

Still it’s small pickings, this team has been decimated by injuries and not sure what else Marti can do but try and limp us home. The squad just isnt big enough to cope with losing all its experienced players and all its forwards at the same time. Varane had an absolute nightmare and set them up for attacks four or five times by giving it away

Cardiff looked shite and wouldn’t be surprised if they go down. Any team in form would have romped that game

Would agree with this. Also thought we looked a lot poorer when Alfie came off. Bennie up front is not something many would have had on their bingo cards at the start of the season.

agree - thought he did pretty well. Defence as a whole played ok in my view. But creativity wise there's really nothing there.
It was a dull game, dull atmosphere, all round dull. But at least the sun was out

presumably you weren't at the Blackburn 0-4 under Ainsworth then. That was my all time low.

But I do agree that this one was pretty poor

I think the pride thing really is an issue within the club. Not sure how you change that. We seem to continually attract the wrong type both on off the pitch...which just causes the problem to persist. We are a strange club... especially for one in London. The supporters however, are in a class of their own...and deserve so much better.

Two poor sides like the OP says, and yet Paal and Colback actually had one (two?) of their better games today, Smyth did some bright bits, and Morrison and Edwards were decent. Low expectations.

When you look at the contributions of Varanne,Celar, Madsen and Dembele over this season... it's no wonder we are in the shite again. You would think one out of four might have worked at least.

To be fair to Celar he was the difference between the sides in Cardiff. Maybe this opposition would have suited him had he been fit to play today.

I have mentioned before that it would have been nice to see more of him, but I have a nagging feeling he wouldn't bring anymore to the table than the other three. Dreadful transfer business by Nourry unfortunately.

I didn't see that first as quite as poor as some of these posts. Thought we should have gone in in front, and also thought Alfie had one of his better afternoons until the knock - reasonable touch, decent presence and 2 or 3 well directed headers. We're so paper thin we missed him when he went off.

But second half we were clueless. No idea. And Bennie isn't going to win a header against 3 tall opposition defenders however many times we give that a go - at least punt it behind them and see if he can get to it.

Celar struggled, as did the whole team, with one win in the first third of the season. The two goals he got at Cardiff were quality finishes. He was unlucky not to get the winner at Watford too hitting the inside of the post near the end. The lad was just starting to show a bit of promise before he got a serious injury. Typical of our luck that when a glimmer of hope appears it is quickly snuffed out.

The win at Cardiff helped us put a run together to get out of the danger zone and it is that spell of good form that might save us from relegation. Had that run not occurred I am sure we would have been in the bottom 3 with Plymouth most of the season and we would be staring down the barrel now. We at least have a fighting chance of staying up thanks to the form in the second third of the season.

The Ray Harford years were worse for me especially the winter evening games.

Much of what you want to say about todays game you have already said in previous post match threads this season. I agree that there should have been some moments of quality today but we fielded a weakened team containing several players not fully fit. Add to that all of the nerves out there and we get that performance.

One of the better player performances today came from a player who many on here tell us is useless, doesn't care because he is leaving and is already on the beach.

Go figure.

Tactics-wise, it was Colback in front of the defence and Andersen as the AMC.

Colback played better here as he was not forced to run up and down the pitch. Andersen was okay but off the pace. He does not have the legs for it, despite trying to run around before being subbed off.

Lloyd tried hard to occupy their backline and did okay, considering he's not really a first-teamer. Smyth was decent, and Field was good in the first half but slow in the second, which is understandable.

Backline played well against a lame Cardffi. Paal this time was on his game, which made a change. But our fullbacks had it easy as
really Cardiff are poor due to having no wingers (should have played Willock) and no forwards (Robinson is drek poor and should have started Méïté) and an average defence.

We should have pushed to win this game, but I bet the objective was not to lose, as then Cardiff would have gained points. Cardiff are in serious trouble now. That's a game they should have pushed to win, as we were on the beach. The manager of Cardiff is clueless. That game was made for Willock and Méïté.

Yang blew his chance on the left. While he's better on the left than the right, he still did little and even gave the ball away dangerously in the first half. I called it before the match that Marti would start Yang on the left, but I suspect that for the next game, Marti will replace him with Smyth on the left and Demeble on the right until Saito returns as Yang is too error prone and did not beat his man Rinomhota who looked decent.

Colwill also looked good for them too.

As we can see, it's desperate times when Bennie is coming on as your forward sub.
We need Frey back quick and Kohli.

Also, I notice that JCS and Celar really have been out for most of the season. I doubt they will ever return this year.

zzzzzzzzzz
