Steve cook staying on 12:01 - Apr 14 by LazyFan | This article also hints that Norry considers us safe for Champ next season. Which means we now looking to next seasons squad. After they lock in Cook, which means QPR will start looking around for those who will be out of contract and or in the final year for the bargain deals. And also the lower leagues, if they are under contract. Saito is the obvious one we could offer a deal to, as he's supposedly out of contract. That's the next one we should be after. No chance with Edwards as his wages will be way too big for us, let alone they bought him for £3m and will want that back at least if not more. Dunne is going to SU and if they get promoted, Wilder will buy Chair as well. Paal is probably still off to Watford. And we should be letting Colback and Andersen go. Fox I like, but he's always injured so, he will be let go as well. Thats a lot of wages off the books. Which should free up money for signing a RB and yet another big man up top. This time it will be someone who can hold the ball up and head it, unlike Celar. I doubt Ashby will be signed as Wet Spam bought him for too much and has not really delivered anyway. And Yang is too error prone for Marti. Santos ... remember him? He will be sold for sure, along with EDB. With Lloyd loaned out. Then there is our friend Richards; he, I believe, is in the last year of his contract. So, I expect him to be totally available, playing like a madman to get a new contract somewhere else. Its gonna be popcorn to watch it all play out. |
Ashby is on loan from Newcastle not West Ham.
Steve cook staying on 14:16 - Apr 14 with 3352 views | Northernr | What's sort of hinted at in that WLS piece but not said implicitly is that a) we've stayed up and b) he's played a set number of games and therefore he's entitled to the deal. Would be interesting to know if that's the case - when he signed it was two years with a third year option, perhaps that option was if we're still in the Champ and you've played x games you get the third year regardless.

A while ago someone posted that Cook and Colback had the option of a further year on their contracts that they, not the club, could trigger at the end of this season. I was very sceptical of that and still am.

Steve cook staying on 08:37 - Apr 14 by PlanetHonneywood | We've had a good history of getting a tune out of seasoned gnarly old pros down the years, and Cook does bring some heft to the squad. So I also think it's good news. This leads to a question: What about Colbeck? Too many disciplinary and injury concerns and he turns 36 in October. Again, does bring something to the party, not sure for how much linger though. |
Colback would have to be a one deal on a reduced wage, if he'll accept that. Potentially a useful option off the bench next season, but not much more than that.

Not the same type of player at all. Varane was the Hayden replacement, and it was 100% the right move. Hayden as an experienced head and depth in DM I'd probably still take, but not as a replacement for Colback. In my view Field and Colback are the similar players - pressing 8's capable of dropping as more of a DM if needed.

Why you say that??? He is one of our best midfielders and showing no signs of failing. Big 'plus' for the team & Club. Need to open your eyes a bit!!! No issues with keeping Cook or Colback providing wages are not out of our league. [Post edited 15 Apr 9:23]

Sorry Gazza you can't play a Championship season with a 36 year old as one of your main central midfielders. Let alone the suspensions he gets and it's highly unlikely he'll stay fit anyway (as we've already seen in his time with us). Happy to have him as a squad player, experience in the dressing room, decent back-up off the bench/when injuries hit. But all depends on wages and what he'll accept.

Steve cook staying on 09:42 - Apr 15 with 1998 views | corse | Experienced, leader but expensive, getting older and thus more injury prone. We still do need a centre back or two and im not sure if putting that money on cooks salaries is a good idea.

So you are 'happy' with him as a squad player, then in 3 months time, 3 months older, despite that he currently plays most weeks because MC rates him and I would suggest many other within the Club do too and doing a very decent job, a key player for the Team - just watch what he does, no signs that he cannot get around the pitch whatsoever, you want he relegated to a squad player.. Absolute nonsense, 100%. If he meets our wage structure and he is willing to stay then sign him up and let him play & use his experience around the playing staff. The same goes for Cook too, but hey-ho you probably have no issues signing him again!!!! Nonsense.

Barry Bannan is just 2 months younger than Colback and seems to do ok for Sheffield Wednesday. No-one is suggesting he should play every game but he’s been one of our most important players recently and I’d keep him for another year if wages are acceptable.

Exactly, good chat.......and the raves we get about him on this very MB!!!!! It is all down to money because he is a good asset to the Club and specifically the Team. [Post edited 15 Apr 10:00]

Steve cook staying on 10:18 - Apr 15 with 1851 views | nadera78 | Re-signing Colback doesn't improve our team, at the absolute most it maintains us as a 16th-ranked side. Unless we want a repeat of this season our limited budget means that has to be the question asked of every signing.

Well Bannan is a bit of a different player to Colback, but seems to have a better fitness and disciplinary record. And in any case Wednesday are only one place and three points better than us currently. I'm not against keeping Colback but he shouldn't be our first choice central midfielder. Keep him in the squad if the money is right. And he may reject our offer anyway if he thinks he can get better elsewhere.

This. Not only does Bannan play more games, has a better disciplinary record (so is even more available and less or risk in the actual match), but here's the rub ... Bannan is a far better player than Colback. We all know that Sheff Wed rely on Bannan a lot, just like we relied on Chair a lot. But now we have proven we can survive without Chair (this is the number 1 positive from this whole season). We should not compare the impact of Bannan for Sheff Wed with Colback for QPR, its not the same comparison. A better comparison is Bannan vs Chair.

Steve cook staying on 11:33 - Apr 15 with 1628 views | simmo | It's a player LIKE Colback we should look to get, not Colback himself. His game relies on legs, work rate and availability, all of which transform our midfield, to rely on a 35 year old for those things is a bit mental.

What’s all this talk about re-signing Colback as a first team regular and ‘relying’ on him? He’s a good squad player and done a decent job when called upon this season so worth a look at another year IF the wages look ok. And his disciplinary stats this season: 6 yellows and 1 red in 20 league appearances which are not horrendous for the role and position he plays. Not helped when getting ridiculous smashed hospital passes like the one from Varane on Saturday:

My point was more relying on his skill set, rather than the player himself. Having the ability to get around the pitch and press makes a huge difference to how we play and is something we have severely lacked at times, it's also one of the reasons Morgan stood out when he first came into the team - at a time when Colback was still unavailable. As you say, it's worth a look if the wages look OK, but I think we should be looking to move on from a 35 year old whose best traits are when we're out of possession (unlike Bannan who was mentioned by way of comparison earlier).
