Reasons to Be Cynical 09:54 - Apr 20 with 2199 viewsFlamingbankers

I enjoyed reading the 'Party Time' thread on here and there are plenty of reasons to be cynical. However, the 'most' of the fans ain't one and some of the players.

Right, so that doesn't leave much not to be cynical about I suppose. Something I saw yesterday that I can be very cynical about was Lesley Ugochukwu showing the badge to the fans. Now that is something to be very cynical about with the guy going back to Chelsea in a few weeks (unless there's a deal to keep for next season but can you trust SR to make that move or decision?).

I was going to list all the reasons to be cynical but I can't be bothered, it's just everything else other than the fans and a few players.

Not entirely sure about Big Les being cynical. You play for the team you are in. He scored, knew what it meant to the fans and acknowledged them through the club badge. Good sportsmanship in my opinion.

Have just watched the goal and celebration on motd and inclined to agree with you mushinexile.
You can see the jubilation in his face in scoring that goal and he wanted to celebrate that with the fans sharing our passion
Whether he'll still be here next season is probably another story, or whether he wants to stay, but he won't get in the Chelsea first team

"You can see the jubilation in his face in scoring that goal and he wanted to celebrate that with the fans sharing our passion."

So he's showing the badge because he's excited at scoring and it doesn't mean anything other than that. That's very superficial but I guess that's life these days. Nothing has much meaning , it's all expendable. The guy doesn't really give a shit about the club but he's happy for a few moments. Great life philosophy.

And as for 'sportsmanship', it's got sod all to do with that. Sportsmanship would be being restrained, humble and respectful.

Some people, I ask you!

The Party Time thread / post was intended to be tongue in cheek.

Whilst I jest and took the pïss, part of me was chuffed to nuts that we had finally reached Derby’s tally (I don’t want my club to set yet another record for all the wrong reasons). If we muster one more point then I think we should be given an additional day off to get over the celebrations along with a huge reduction in next years ST price (I ain’t joking mind on the latter).

A rubbish season? absolutely, but let’s hope the clowns running the asylum have learnt some valuable lessons and begin to get things right (on the pitch side of matters).

He knew he had saved his team from being the worst ever - cut the bloke some slack! This could be the highlight of our season!

I trust you're not having a go at me with that last comment, but that could be deemed as a cynical viewpoint or maybe a personal dig which was uncalled for

The thing is we don't know what he is thinking about the club, but he is clearly showing delight at scoring an important goal for the club and 3000 odd Saints fans that made the journey to East London

I'm not sure what the loan arrangements are come the end of this season for him, he may even be playing for a permanent contract with us?

But no matter what, I certainly enjoyed that moment when it happened as did the other 2999 Saints fans therea

Thank you. I hope Charley Farley starts him next week. There is little better for team morale than fielding a player who got his eye in last time out.

Im quite cynical about players kissing the badge etc, but thats football and has been for 40 years now.

Footballers know it is a job they also know that the club they play for will dump them very quickly if they are not good enough so loyalty is based on if you are under contract.

Look at Kevin De Bruyne in the paper moaning that after years of success at City they never offered him a new deal and he found out by a meeting with the DOF and no sign of Pep Guardiola, he realised then he was just a commodity.

Another article on Trent Alexander-Arnold suggested that he had realised this when he was a kid when from 8 years old to 18 every April/May was a time of worry whether he would be retained and that he saw some of his best friends dumped callously along the way.

Footballers are loyal to the clubs they are under contract to, they are still human, the adrenalin is pumping and when goals are scored a lot of pressure is released, watch a film about football where actors try to recreate players celebrating scoring or for that matter fans celebrating, you can see it is all fake.

The celebrations are real, but only for that moment and the time they are under contract.

If players didn't jump around then they would soon be slagged off by the fans for having no passion.

‘Footballers are still loyal to the clubs they are under contract to’ - I would say ‘loosely speaking’ as Big Virg or players wanting a lucrative move weren’t 😉

You can tell that players are often under the spell of their agents.

Dibling is currently giving it the "I love Southampton" message, clearly being advised by his agent to do so.

I barely read or listen to player interviews, it is very rare that the players truly speak their mind.

My thoughts exactly re Dibling’s I really love Southampton FC interview - If that’s the case then tell the two bit German agency representing you that you want to accept SFC’s improved contract offer, sign it, then stay here next season and help get us back up. As much as I’d love to see him stay, I think I have more chance of bench pressing an elephant than seeing it happen…

Well, I hope it is a very light elephant because I think that both he and the club have somewhat inflated ideas regarding his market value.
