STADIUM EXPANSION 18:03 - May 4 with 5983 viewsjohnlangy

Yes, again.

Over the last few games we've all been saying the Club should try to attract people with Kids for a quid or whatever, saying those children will become proper supporters, a new generation and all that but you've got to get them through the door first. Those games were against Derby, Plymouth, Hull and Oxford. No offence to those clubs but the time that idea would have had a huge effect in attracting youngsters would have been in the PL. The problem was that there were no seats to accommodate them.

We've just had an excellent run-in with the result that the last two gates were just under 19k and 20k. What would the demand have been if those games were for a place in the play offs ? What would the demand have been if it was the actual play off semi ? Remember 2011 ?

The usual argument against is money. We should spend the money on the team. Another argument is from people who ask if the demand is there. There definitely is a demand imo as these last couple of games have shown again.

I don't suggest spending now because the 'spend on the team' argument is correct at the moment. But if we do manage to get to the PL again I believe the diggers should be in asap after the final game.

My reasoning is this. The first time we spent on the academy and the 1st team training facility. The two combined came to about £25 million from memory (roughly ?). But over the seven years TV money came to over £800 million ! And the vast bulk of that went into the players pockets. And with the last throw of the dice HJ spent probably £60 million or more on Ayew and Bony with their transfer costs and contracts. How does that spend compare with the investment in permanent Club infrastructure ? Do we want it all go to the players ?

If we do get there the only Club infra that we CAN spend on would be expanding the stadium and I believe that's exactly what we should do.

It's engineering. Most things are possible if you chuck enough money at it.

The integral structure doesn’t allow for it. When it was built it was stated that it was engineered in such a way that expansion was not technically possible and that an expansion to bigger stadium would require a new stadium to be built.

But they had the planning done and all that. Why impossible? In my honest opinion it’s imperative we keep on growing and getting more and more lifelong fans on board.

Totally agree. They only become lifelong fans if they are able to get tickets to watch games. And in the PL with a 21k capacity that just isn't/wasn't possible.

That's not strictly true. There are many supporters of Premier League clubs who have never been to the ground of the team they support. They spent a fortune on merchandise and watch their team on tv/streams but never live.

I'm sure I remember it was a cantilever over the East then the south and north coming around the corners.

I can remember seeing drawings of detail of various elevations back in the day when the other lot took over. It was basically another tier on top of the east stand. As mentioned elsewhere it is just down to money & engineering. Difficult to make a business case for it though

I recall the re was a plan to make the east and west stands form a continuous grade with no mid access berm.

This was a cheap way of increasing capacity. The berms at the access level are quite wide. It would be negative in terms of access.

I seem to recall it being widely reported at the time that the stadium wasn't built with the capacity for easy expansion in mind which may be what Itchy is referring to. If memory serves the general attitude of the council was "have what you're given and be grateful. You won't fill it anyway".

But if they can build a 31 mile railway tunnel underneath the English Channel or a bridge in China that the Empire State Building could pass underneath vertically with a few hundred feet to spare I can't imagine that chucking an extra 10,000 seats onto a stadium in Swansea would prove to be an insurmountable technical challenge.

Not that it's likely to happen any time soon anyway.

That's sort of true. But i'd class those people as fans. My brother is a fan of Arsenal. He's bought some shirts over the years but never been to Highbury or the Emirates. He just liked the way they used to play football and has stuck with them. But the very small amount of money he's put in will have made a negligible difference. Others may buy more merchandise but it's still not a huge amount.

A supporter to me is someone who puts money into a club in the form of ST's or game tickets every year amounting to many thousands over a lifetime. Plus they are in the ground literally supporting the team with their presence.

Just because ot probably won't be extended doesn't mean it can't be AND seeing as plans were drawn up that's a certainty that the experts say it CAN be extended.

The plans exist.

Our average attendance this season has been 15,309, so we're not currently filling our existing capacity. Ok, some of those empty seats will be away allocation and segregation but still only 75% occupied. Yes a lot of it has been down to the feeling around the club and the performances under Williams which have significantly improved as has the attendances, but let's not be too hasty. If (and it's a big if) we get back into the premiership we should only look to expand if the board feels we've got a genuine strong enough squad to sustain premier league status for a number of years. We go straight back down, so will our attendances, however the longer and more established we become the more interest and new fans we will attract which would make expanding for the long term more of a rationale decision.
