The Big Match 1975/76 starts on ITV4 on the 24th May,

We're not in the first 2 episodes although Ray Wilkins is in the studio on the 1st June one after Chelsea played Carlisle.

Our game against West Ham is featured with extended highlights on Saturday 7th June. Around 30 mins of highlights followed by Phil Parkes in the studio

Watching it now. Sod Pep, we were playing it out from the back way before it became trendy. Good to see Tony Tagg who lived next door to a good mate of mine in Chessington. He later became a postie.

Seems like there is a lot more care and concern for rare gems at the ITV archives, than their counterparts, and thats good to know. Much as i love The Big Match re runs, does surprise me that there is such an appetite from viewers, in terms of attracting sufficient advertising revenue. By the same token, i used to collect all the various The Big Match dvd's and other PDI/ITV/BBC related releases, and surprised if much profit was made, as Pretty sure the guy who licensed the Nostalgic tv dvd releases of the 70/71/76 cup finals, made a loss on them. Would love to see some of the midweek matches from the 70s/80s shown on ITV. Regarding QPR v West Ham from 75/76 showing on the upcoming The Big Match, i thought only 10 minutes or so of this existed from Granada's The Kick off match, where the main match was Blackpool v Sunderland. Some time ago i had heard there was tape damage to the Big Match programme featuring the extended QPR v West Ham. Of course with the need to insert 3 ad breaks, i dread the butchering on The Big Match Revisited.! Personally i would prefer interviews and/or random items to edited out, as opposed to match footage and abrupt endings with no end credits.

Back in the day I had a mate who was involved with the recording of all home games which is why I still have VHS copies of the full QPR vs Newcastle 5-5 game & QPR vs WHU game with Pizanti's worldy. No commentary, just the sound of the players and the crowd.
It's been a while since I watched either tape but IIRC the 5-5 should have been 7-6 but for bad officiating.

I've still got the tape of the 5-5 game. Someone outside the ground was flogging them. But I don't have a VHS player! Perhaps they'll put it in my coffin when the time comes!

Just don't get buried under the pitch - you may end up in the foundations for high end tower block.

Interesting how Liverpool fed off 2nd balls in the penalty area as their modus operandi.

Harsh pen on Howe. Seemed to have got the ball from Dalglish?

Superb stuff! It's the archaeology of football, the actual true essence of football itself.
When I die, my only wish is for my coffin to be carried in to the sound of the Big Match theme tune.

Absolutely!
That, along with the smell of Sunday roast dinner cooking and the Weekend World theme tune, is my abiding memory of late 1970s Sundays.

I agree, it was bad officiating in that game. It still stands out to me, apart from the 10 goals and great comeback, but also because I had a 15 team accumulator bet and had 14 correct results. Guess which match lost my bet!!

I was so p1ssed off I wrote to the FA to let them know the officials cost me well over £2000 (I stopped calculating after the 13th game).

I've never understood why the BBC haven't done something like this on BBC Four with old Match of the Days. Perhaps they haven't got the archives of the early 70s episodes (a bit like the TOTPs from the same era) but I thought from the late 70s onwards - about 1978 - they stopped routinely wiping tapes of old shows and a proper archival policy was put in place.

They've got the archive footage somewhere. They only don't show the ToTP because of all the horrible nonces that worked at the BBC at the time

I know a few of the people in charge of the archive at ITV and they have found some real treasures last few years, they are going through a programme at the moment digitising all assets that are on video tape, a lot of the old kids shows from the 80's have been done like Button Moon which are all on ITVX now. Guy I know found a lost episode of Comical history tour of Britain which he is very proud of and thats now on ITVX

Part of that is finding old football matches as there is a real appetite for people to watch these games, hence the big match at the moment but they are working on quite a few football docs which will likely go on itvx

I used to have a login for Redux
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Redux
It was really good, you could do archive retrievals at different bitrates.
You could even submit searches for old content that would trigger a Human to go and find the content on a dusty shelf somewhere and digitise it.

Some old series were famously recorded over, but everything new is kept now, just not always available on IPlayer due to licencing

Rangers v derby from December 1975, this Saturday 10.30m ITV4

Think this is the game where a P.Nutt scored for us. Not the only nut to ever score for us of course, Tony Hazell and Alan Brazil.

I still get annoyed about this game. Sexton left out Stan Bowles, a man who destroyed Derby a few months earlier, giving Derby's defence a huge boost. Derby were only second to us on goal average that day so w²e should have played our strongest team with Stan to open up their defence.

Been enjoying all these - although it feels like they show West Ham as the main game every other week, for some reason.

This site http://carousel.royalwebhosting.net/itv/ITVclubs.html?19760631!!L
lists all the featured main matches on all the regionalised football shows. For LWT in that season, the numbers clubs were shown (as a home team as the main LWT match) up until the point we're at in the current season is:
West Ham 4
QPR 3
Arsenal 2
Spurs 2
ch*ls** 2
Fulham 1
Palace 1
Charlton 1
Luton? 1 (although they were playing Fulham)

I think West Ham were on a lot early season because up until Christmas they weren't doing too badly (I think one time in October/November they were 2nd or 3rd and they were 6th on Xmas Day that year). Their form absolutely fell off a cliff afterwards though. 8 points from 21 games finishing 18th.

This is why I've always said that if our game at Upton Park had been left in it's original place as our final game of the season rather than being brought forward to FA Cup 4th round day, we'd have won the game and the title.

Poll: Which is the worst QPR team?
