Paul Furlong deserves a 1st Team chance 06:51 - May 16 with 5514 viewsmacclesfieldman

He is a Rs legend, is loyal to the club, knows our youngsters, won't cost compensation and shows career progression within the club is possible.
Would prefer us to back Paul than any of the other names being linked.

Wild horses couldn't drag me away...

Depends on Furlong, too, though. What's his ambition? He's moved up through each age group at the club, over a decade's steady work and progress. If this is the ceiling of his coaching ambition, then great. Aren't both club and coach lucky...

But if he has an ambition to keep progressing, to become a first team head coach, puts himself in the picture for the QPR job and doesn't get it. Well, that's a problem. Someone else may well give this successful development coach a job.

Does he want to usher another set of U21s through, or does he need a new challenge - one crack at a top job? Making assumptions on his behalf seems unwise.

All true. I think we also need to be careful about what progress is. That late stage development role done correctly could be the lifeblood of a club like ours, and he's smashed it this season.

Not everyone wants to coach the first team and deal with all the headaches that entails. Wouldn't be hard to see that someone with Furs' successes isn't looking for it.

If that's not the case fair enough but I think we should just celebrate last night and let him speak for himself - no offence to the intent of the OP - perfectly fair comment.

Pigbag as well ❤️

Only a small thing, but it’s nice to know those small bits of fan culture drip down to the players.

💯, love that

Paul will be 57 next October. That would be quite an age to take on your initial first team head coach role.

Just a number and you could argue the perfect age and experience at the same club, gets the culture etc and just won our 1st meaningful trophy for years. We played attractive football last night, I think all players would respond

Gets my vote, way more experience than Cleverly

Suspect he is in his happy place professionally

In my last employment, I realised I was perfectly happy with my role and refused to climb the greasy ladder any further. It probably meant I missed out on a few more bucks in the bank, but I thought, so what? Enjoying your job and not having the pressure of having to perform at a higher level is probably a price well worth paying. For once, I was right about an important life decision, and I've never regretted it.

Give him a well deserved pay rise and let him continue doing a magnificent job.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

You could tell that when they were celebrating after cup presentation. They were nearly all belting out Hi Ho Silver Lining with the crowd.

The grass is always greener.

I hope you're describing promoting youth coaches...

If so, some youth coaches whose promotion was more successful than Chris Ramsey (who still wasn't half as bad as numerous managers he followed/preceded at QPR):

Liam Manning
Graham Potter
Thomas Frank (18 years a youth coach, then a B team manager)
Kieran McKenna
Pep Guardiola (!)
Brendan Rogers
Eddie Howe
Arnie Slot
Daniel Farke
Gary O'Neil
Victor Pereira

Etc etc.

It's not without precedent. No guarantee that any appointment will succeed in the slightest, of course. But the bookies' favourite had been coaching Watford's U18s for six months when promoted to Watford's head coach, a position he held for all of 13 months. More or less qualified than Paul Furlong?

I think you can add Gordon Jago to that list & definitely George Graham.

Kiyan Prince's dad seems to know him from schooldays and speaks very highly of his character,

My lad was involved in an R's day of some sort 20 years ago and came back saying even though he was'nt one of the main players hosting said he was the one who made the most time for them,

Really pleasing when good people such as Furlong get the plaudits they're long overdue, and his son is a credit to him too, always good with out fans despite the few idiots who dig him out.

Furs has done a great job this season, and bringing in new youth signings and getting them into the team. Absolutely no reason to move him on while he’s building something good. We need him to carry on the good work he does. He clearly enjoys it and it’s so good to see him have something to celebrate for his own personal achievement this year. It’s a hard job to be fair and he’s done brilliantly - leave well alone!

Carry on the good work Furs, look forward to seeing how these boys of yours do next season.

Worked really well with Chris Ramsey didn't it.

Well other approaches haven't exactly worked either!
