20 mph on 14:53 - May 28 with 826 views | Kilkennyjack | The roll out and comms were both poor. Reviewing and adjusting was always part of the plan. Very successful though …. Data for the first full quarter following introduction of the 20mph default speed limit in Wales have revealed a 32% reduction in casualties on restricted roads. This is the lowest figure on record for Welsh roads with 20mph and 30mph limits. Apart from lives saved/protectec …..there are associated NHS savings and lower car insurance premiums. Well done Drakers, proved the doubters wrong.

So it was part of the plan to use our money to put up 20 mph road signs only to take them down again don't be ridiculous. [Post edited 28 May 15:02]

With so few people sticking to the ridiculously slow limit it is more likely that reduction is due to less use of vehicles due to the credit crunch. The thing about statistics is they can be twisted to meet an agenda

They mixed the stats for 20 and 30 together, why? The figures for lives saved is very low and possibly a lot more could have been saved if they'd brought it in sensibly, that is where the limits needed changing and then putting the extra millions towards getting waiting lists down All Drakers has proved is he couldn't organise a good time in a brewery.

Wrong. ‘Statistics published by Welsh Government today (30 January 2025) show that around 100 fewer people were killed or seriously injured on roads with 20mph and 30mph road speed limits in the 12-month period following the introduction of the 20mph default speed limit’. So the change made then saved 100 people from death or serious injury. Maybe 100 lives does notmatter too much to you, but it works for me. As i said, both the roll out and supporting comms were poor. However, you should thank Drakers for the good this change has made. A statue of Drakers with a 20 sign outside the Senedd is the obvious next step. God bless Drakers.

Well yes, there would have been a forward budget agreed to change the signs if the real world impact was not as anticipated. Thats just common sense. (Google the Truss budget if you are concerned about the waste of public monies). Personally i would have preffered a welsh region by region roll out so successes could be shared and lessons learned. But obviously the longer you wait then the more people are killed or seriously injured.

But the breakdown includes 20mph AND 30mph figures - it doesn’t distinguish between the two different limits. We need to see the breakdown of both areas and a direct comparison of the new 20mph areas v the old 30mph areas. There’s a place for the 20mph limits, but imho not the way it’s been implemented.

When they publish comparable data, rather than combine 20 and 30 mph zones, I'll start to draw conclusions.

The point that others don't want to see is that it's all about balance. Cutting the speed limit to 10 mph in some circumstances would save even more injuries and deaths. Nobody is against speed limits appropriate to the circumstances, what we are against is an ill thought out default speed limit of 20 mph which is now being reversed in some areas. The 20 mph introduction should have been researched properly and introduced where it was needed, not as a default to prove a point. It is one of the major contributions to the demise of Labour in Wales, they will lose power in the Senedd over this and it's their own fault.

I'm all for the 20 mph speed limit particular outside schools, hospitals, shopping areas, care homes, etc and have no issue with it in built up areas with lots of houses about.
