Come back Southgate... on 08:33 - Jun 11 with 1502 views | thehat | I thought Eze did OK - Was involved in our goal never gave the ball away and things looked like they might happen when he was in possession. Shame his two starts have been friendlies - We needed him to start a competitive match for our "add on" to be payable.

He was Sky's player of the game for England, the only one with a 7. Mine too. Put in some spectacular passing from almost impossible positions. I'd like to see him run at /past defenders more at International level.

Come back Southgate... on 22:02 - Jun 10 by Toast_R | Three cheers for the Senegalese, they wanted it more. The referee was abysmal and so were England. Some of those players are sleepwalking but then, didn't we lose 4-0.to Hungary nder Southgate this time of year when the players had clearly checked out for the summer? Let's not over egg it I guess. |
Yeah that's where I am. Of course the only way Tuchel can better Southgate is by winning a trophy. Let's see. Although it doesn't help if he keeps picking Scum players cos he knows them better from when he was manager there. I expect though a revert to qualifying for tournaments but then going out in the knockout stages to the first decent team we play. Still, it's nearly 60 years though since we won a tournament FFS (and no I'm not counting Le Tournoi!). Every other major European nation has won something in that time. It's really quite rubbish.

Come back Southgate... on 22:15 - Jun 10 by BazzaInTheLoft | There are few opinions that I’ll die on a hill for, but one of them is that Gareth Southgate pulled fcking miracles with this nation and was largely but not entirely pilloried for it. That said, plenty of great sides started with a wobble and I think Tuchel’s class will shine through. |
Gareth was like the best blue film of a softcore nature going.... Confessions of a High Level Football Manager. Everything was absolutely superb apart from getting it over the line and the big result at the end. That hill next to yours will feature me forever saying the single biggest ever chance for an international trophy in my lifetime was spaffed up the wall by him against Italy at Wembley. It's sad that this will be his legacy for me as undoubtably he set things back on the straight and narrow after he fell into the job by default.

Come back Southgate... on 10:58 - Jun 11 with 1290 views | BAWHoops | Almost like Southgate was fantastic for England and achieved far more than any of his storied predecessors, but was mocked because he was a decent bloke. That being said we were pony last Euro's and somehow scrapped to the final (won one match in 90 mins). It seems Tuchel has decided he wants to play ALL THE ATTACKERS (which Southgate did last summer as well) but that never works for England. The best we have looked is with 2 deep pivots (Rice and Phillips/Henderson) but we can't play that because teenagers on Social Media moan it's boring.

It depends on the opposition whether you should play 2 'deep pivots' (whatever that means). If you're playing Spain, Germany etc then yes I can see the benfit but if you're Andorra why would you waste 2 players playing just in front of your back line? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Come back Southgate... on 08:07 - Jun 11 by JamesB1979 | It’s an end of season friendly. And prior game against bunch of no-hopers. The players want to be on holiday. Southgate got us relegated from the nations league losing twice to Hungary. You cannot make such an early judgment on the new guy. The only judgement is performance against big teams in big tournaments. Order is World Cup, Euros, Nations league and then friendlies. And I say all this when I think his decisions have at best been questionable! |
Although I was narked off last night I see it like this too. My only reservation is why play Henderson (v Andorra) and Walker. They are now yesterday's hero's, as it were. Need to use games like last night and the Andorra's to blood new players in the same positions. [Post edited 11 Jun 13:05]

Because you still need to control the game and have a coherent shape. We played one DM v Andora and were terrible because the players were all standing on each others toes.

Come back Southgate... on 05:24 - Jun 11 by bongo_king | Yeah also though it should have been Howe or Potter. This does so far have a very Capello feel to it.. hopefully it will change, but Tuchel is known for his falling outs (generally with hierarchy admittedly rather than players), and the treatment of some players so far and the reaction of others does not bode well. I do find it bizarre that we are the only "major" football nation which keeps hiring foreign managers... not seeing France, Italy, Spain, Germany or Netherlands doing that. Yet our best runs in competitions have come under English managers, even if some of them like Southgate have club records which could be called average at best. In the end though, I guess around this time next year we'll find out if the Tuchel experiment worked or if the FA is facing a multi-million contract payoff. |

We'll have to agree to disagree. If your playing Andorra or any other minnow nation we should be playing 4-2-4 with one of the centre backs moving in to the holding position two out and out wingers, 2 mobile strikers that leave gaps for the 2 midfielders to exploit. The major fault with England for years has been the lack of pace we move the ball about at. [Post edited 11 Jun 14:19]

Yes that Potter. Southgate had a win percentage of 20 something percent at boro, far from setting the world alight. But he's the second most successful England manager ever. Sven and Capello won more or less everything going at club level, and arguably with the players at their disposal, both underperformed for England. Not even a semi final between them across their 10 years. Good club manager does guarantee a good national manager. While only a gut feeling, I think Potter with a good range of experience, including importantly in English leagues, would have been a better option than Tuchel (with Howe probably the best option).

Oh yes 100%. I think he’s made some at best strange decisions. Walker and Henderson. Jones at full back….although we started Trent in central mid in a major tournament! But he can only be judged in performances in major tournaments against big sides.

They are very different jobs with different skillsets, was ideal for Southgate not sure he'd do as well in a club job. it's quite rare that managers do well at both club and international level

Neither got to a home final against an average Italy side with two centre backs close to claiming their pension and went 1-0 up in first minute. But I think you know where I'm coming from.

Yeah I know where you are coming from, but that was no average Italy side. It was unbeaten in 50 matches or something. Always gets forgotten that.

I'm ready to have my head chopped off but here goes.... The days of a lumpy centre forward are gone and Kane, fir a his good goals in the past, is now holding the team back. When Eze was joined by Gibbs White and Taylir we had dime pace going forward and shoukd gave scored a couple. Kane is a bit one dimentional and slow these days, and how many top international teams have a centre forward, they tend to be more mobile and tidy on the ball. The other issue for me is too often our first ball is backwards to a back 4 who then roll it around at the back with no drive forward. Only an opinion.

Agree with the last paragraph, but don’t think Kane (who scored by the way) was the reason we conceded three v Senegal.

That’s my biggest bugbear. He is capable of drifting past players like they are nailed to the floor, but often plays the simple pass. Needs to be braver to move on to the next level as a world class player.
