Back in 1998 when Paraguay played in the World Cup, I put £1 on Francisco Arce being 1st goalscorer in each of their group games. I was disappointed when the commentators pronounced his name as AR-CHEY.

"Remember to listen to me but look at her. Don't get it the wrong way round. That would be hideous."

Didn't Frank Skinner have a picture of him stood next Bagheeri showing the names on the back of their shirts so it read Bagheeri Arce.?

There was a Xmas in the 70s, when on the Saturday before Xmas the Derby players took the field each with a square white board with a black letter on it.
They turned to the main stand and held up the boards. They spelt HAPPY CHRISTMAS.
They turned around to face the other stand and held up the boards. They spelt SAMTSIRHC YPPAH.

I remember watching England playing away in Turkey in the 1980s. All the ad boards around the ground were for a block and tile company called Arçelik. How we tittered!

There was a match Wales played away in the world cup. The commentators phoned the commentary in to their news desk.
The commentators said Rush and Hughes must be the best strikers in Europe.
It appeared as Russian Jews must be the best strikers in Europe.
Not sure if this is true…

There was a striker in 3rd division South. in the 50s called Arthur Longbottom. He was inevitably known to the opposition as Shorthouse.
